80 240d 4 speed. Just got a nice one recently, at least everyone I had look at it said it's good. See,I'm a VW guy and had a customer at work who was selling the Merc and it looked really nice, but I knew better then to just buy it without having it looked at. Now I'm having fun learning all about it and doing some minor repairs. Good stuff,I'm glad to be in the club.

When I lived in South Africa I owned 2 S class Merc's. The first was a 350 SE and the second a 280 S. They were both superb. Built like tanks, ultra reliable and a joy to drive. I became a Mercedes addict and here, back in England, my daily driver is now an SLK 320 - a nearly 20 year old example, but it still looks and drives like new car. It will serve me for the rest of my life.

Hi Pierre, thank you for the video. I agree that these are some of the most overlooked models out there. I would add my thoughts on the 107 that the SLC is another great value at the moment. These have always been overshadowed by the SL's. I personally own a 500SLC and a 280SLC with the manual gearbox. Both are amazing cars. Not only beautiful design, but a blast to drive on a perfect day with all the windows and sunroof open. I have noticed as of late that the nicer examples are starting to gain attention in the collector world. Happy Motoring!

I can attest to (1) the w201 190e - restored 6 and drove them for 10 years straight - the 2.6 is the preferred model; (2) the 87-93 300e w124 - just a bulletproof comfortable reliable car, and (3) my favorite, the w126 420SEL Series II (1989-1991) which provides v8 power that gets 22mpg highway/17city and has the long wheel base of the 560SEL without being nose-heavy or having the impossible to repair hydraulic rear suspension. Always buy the best condition you can and pay up at the beginning - it's cheaper and you'll enjoy your car more.

When I went away to university my parents bought me a 1985 190E and I still remember that little car fondly! I literally drove it to death. A Mercedes with an 18yo! I know, don’t judge, it was the 80s & oil was flowing in Texas! I still regret letting go of that baby Benz to, wait for it, get a new Mercedes. That’s all I’ve ever driven in my life. One thing about the new C models is that they no longer have that discreet silver star on the hood. Supposedly, millennials prefer that huge vulgar emblem all the “lower end” models now have. I decided to keep my 2003 C240 & it’s still running well. The interior, though, is cheap plastic & literally falling apart! To close, I wish I still had the 190E!

One more question here. I’ve heard that the Hydrak makes them less valuable. Also I know Mercedes tried to kill off the Hydrak by offering conversion kits to a conventional 3 pedal car. So the Hydrak probably isn’t as prolific in these cars as a normal transmission. What’s your opinion on this?

  • @craigfrench132

I recently bought a 300SE to use as a daily driver. Mine is an '89 in nautical blue and it's gorgeous. I really like the proportions of the short wheelbase W126, which is why I wanted an SE over an SEL. I used to own a W201 so I'm familiar with the M103 engine. Head gaskets, finicky fuel injection system and mediocre fuel mileage are shortcomings. But the motor is buttery smooth and otherwise bulletproof. It's definitely more fuel efficient than a 560SEL. I think you meant to compare it to the 420SEL on that score, where admittedly the 300SE doesn't shine. That's mostly because of the gearing that has the engine spinning at 3500RPM at 70 MPH. It's incredibly comfortable, perfect for road trips, and I get compliments on it all the time. It's a really handsome car.

I agree with the W123 body style. I have a 1981 Mercedes 240d and it is a comfortable car and great to drive. This is my daily driver and has the 4 speed manual transmission which adds to the fun factor. If it needs any work it is fairly easy to work on and the parts are inexpensive and readily available on Mercedes Source, EEuroparts, and Pelican Parts. Often the Original Mercedes Parts are available on these sites.

I would replace the 300SE on your list with a 1981 through 1985 300SD. Besides the head gasket issue on the M103, you also have to deal with the front crank seal and the finicky Bosch Jetronic fuel injection system. You might have to rebuild your front suspension and upgrade to 15" tires to get the ride quality of the 300SE, but the reliability of the 617 is worth it. Also, no check engine lights or smog requirements for the 300SD.

Plus, the '89 also has the later seats, its the last year for virgin steel, no air pump, no MAS relay, no egr valve, and retains the antenna switch (yes, i prefer the original 780/1480 Becker to a blingy new stereo). And, I have a '92 300D 2.5 Turbo that I like better than my '85 300D. Took a while to find my 300SE, because I hated the black, white, silver typicality of almost all W126 cars. For about $3000 I had a convertible with a working hardtop, cold automatic A/C, good tires, reliable, an engine that didn't show signs of death, and was fairly fast and fun.

I find it amazing Americans love the old 240 and 300 diesels. Engines that in Europe we consider noisy, underpowered and unrefined. Yet at the same time, you don’t buy the current diesels, when we’re getting 50+mpg and 250,000 trouble free miles and 280bhp from the refined modern 320cdi units. I sold my 270cdi, a fabulous 5cyl engine with 180k on it. 170bhp, loads of torque, refined and easy 45mpg on a run. I’ve now got the Jaguar XFS. A V6 3.0 diesel that does the 45mpg, will keep up with a Porsche Boxter and is more refined than most petrols, yet isn’t even sold in the US!

You should have recommended a wider year range for the 240D, because they were all good, and you should have included the 300D as nearly the same thing as these 240D. Your first and your last recommendation, I believe that these cars in these years have very expensive transmission problems, and very complicated transmissions. I have a 1986 420SEL, and the whole year range for this model approx. 1986-1991, and the 500SEL and the 560SEL have the same transmission, which can only be removed from the car as a complete unit attached to the engine.

All very good choices. My bias would be away from the 240D to a 300D of roughly the same vintage, simply because a non-turbo Diesel Benz is slower than justice. The acceleration is like walking while sitting down. The other slight list change for me would be the '76-'77 R107. I would go for a '78-'79 for the better corrosion resistant body treatments, (wax-oil & galvi rocker panels for instance), the re-located catalytic converters (out of the engine compartment to underneath where their high heat is less likely to fry wiring and stress rubber parts) and their upgraded K-Jetronic injection. And they still had 190hp, whereas the 1980 model had dropped to 160 in the US. Alden

A good 300D is about twice the price of a 240D, and is about 30 percent more to maintain, thanks to turbo, automatic climate control, more complicated transmission, extra valves to adjust, shorter suspension and motor mount life....the 300D turbo is still a great car but the 240D is actually a better value for the money. I have owned both and currently own a 300D and the 240ds always cost less to keep up with. The 78-80 450SL has a lurking expense- automatic climate control. My ambition with this video was to present the five cheapest mercedes to purchase, sort out to near new condition and maintain in said condition.

All valid considerations. My experience with the Diesel were older, a '71 220D and a ' 75 240D (one of my favorite cars ever) Both were manual shift, and both cartoonishly slow. The expense of the turbo versions are well stated, and the price is a big pain at the outset, but for me the slowness of the NA Diesels is a pain every day after that. Yes, the climate control for the late 70s US cars is a tragedy. Why the development team thought "pushbuttons equals luxury" is beyond me. The knobs and levers of the W115 cars worked so much more reliably and with less points of failure. For me the drivability of the K-Jetronic version is what wins. I had a '73 450SE, the solid lifter motor with the earlier injection, and I could never get it right. 11mpg and a 75 mile commute quickly put it back on the market. My '79 450SEL was all the good things, smooth & powerful, and a livable 17mpg highway. Keep up the good work, as I look forward to more .@@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753

you're have a lot of mercedes! Here's what i determined...i owned both a 1974 240D and a 1969 220d...I felt both performed well compared to the 300D non turbo wagon I had later. the 220D felt tired after 75 mph...the 240D cruised comfortably at 70 but did not accelerate well until I set up the auto trans to shift correctly. The 240D w115 was a smoother, quieter car than the 123, but the 123 did have more off the line power. the 220D was pretty good with stick shift though.

  • @FlashDriveFilms

    @FlashDriveFilms

    5 жыл бұрын

My 220D was not only manual, it was a column shifter, which was a unique experience for me. It had astounding A/,C powered by a chunky York piston compressor the size of a child's lunchbox (not a modern rotary) that would deliver air in your choice of "crushed" or "cubed" on the hottest days. That said, even on the highway, if you suddenly turned on the A/C, it would have you frantically checking to see if the parking brake had accidentally been engaged. Instant 5mph speed loss. It was also, and I'm not exaggerating, over 25 seconds 0-60. (Road & Track got 27.5 in their June 1971 road test) Once you were up to speed, it was fine and would cruise all day in balanced comfort. The trick to offsetting the inability to ever go fast was to never go slow, just keep your foot in it continuously. Alden @@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
