It was produced until 1993. Mine was delivered in 11/93. Still have it from almost new. Built when the engineers not accountants were in charge.

I recently got a very nice '90 190E 2.6 with 95K original Southern Cal miles and a virtual total mechanical rebuild by the previous owner, who happens to own a Merc specialty garage. I never imagined myself owning ones of these but when I saw his for sale I went for a look and drive, and I knew I had to have it. The interior is almost as-new. The Sacco design is classic, crisp, and both very of it's time yet timeless (not an easy trick.) In 2023 it still feels rock solid and provides a smooth and cocoon-like driving experience in the city, and is fabulous and comfortable for highway cruises. People respond to it almost universally positively. I think for them, as for me, it reminds them of a better, simpler time...of being a hell of a lot younger. Of quality, of things built to last. When I'm blasting some period-correct music on the very nice newer music system (New Order and Smashing Pumpkins have been on heavy rotation) floating around town, I can't imagine driving anything else...

The W201 190E is a basic saloon car with excellent build quality and is the forerunner of the C-Class. I own a 2009 W204 C200 and I'm loving it. Easily the best modern Merc.

I have one - the basic 1.8. And sometimes I think it's a bit boring. And often it is. BUT. It looks very smart and classy and unlike most of the other cars on the road.. It's immensely comfortable. It's tremendously well built. It's not going to go horribly wrong. And y'know - despite being a bit boring and underpowered, it's surprisingly good on the twisty lanes!

Why did it have a normal handbrake? Apparently it was because they couldn't make the mechanism fit in the narrower body without making the drivers foot room smaller. According to a documentary I saw about the 190Es development.

Better than Rover!!! A proper Mercedes when their cars really stood for good quality. The genius of longevity was partly making them look so bland they had very little boy-racer appeal! They are lovely old cars and still seen in many countries, particularly the base diesel models. I rented one on holiday once and driving behind the badge on the front always made me think of the gunsights in old fighter planes! 😁

These are awesome. Very classy. My dad used to have one and it was a distinct step up in quality from the Montego that preceded it. In the end he got a bit bored of it as he felt it wasn’t very exciting so he bought a BMW 535i instead. He offered the 190 to me but I didn’t want it, I had a Golf GTI that I was very happy with but if I could go back in time I’d have both and find somewhere safe, warm and dry to keep them. Along with the 535 because that was a wonderful car too. I think if I were to have a Merc though I reckon a 500SEC is the way to go. The egg shortage is here, it was in the news. Eggs will be the new toilet rolls.

I'd buy you a beer! Probably two actually for that sort of good advice. Personally, although I quite liked the 1980's 190's, I was always put off by the very expensive Mercedes servicing and parts costs,. Not that I could have afforded a new 190 in the 80's. But even affording to buy a secondhand model in the 90's would have put a big dent in my wallet if I had tried to maintain it properly. But, considering the generally poor build quality of 70's and 80's cars, Mercedes do seem to have stood the test of time better than most of their rivals. A very fair and honest review I thought.🙂

They are not expensive now. They do have rust issues but the youngest of them is 30 years old now. If you look hard enough you will find one that was owned by someone who wanted a quality car that they could afford to look after but on a smaller scale to fit into a garage or easier to park. Usually with a full service history and there are plenty of low (sub 100,000) mileage examples so buy on condition not age. The designer, Bruno Sacco said he expected the 190e to have a 30 year lifecycle which is a quite a statement to make and hang his reputation on. I own a 2.6 and accept that it will cost me more in fuel but I wanted a straight six. It goes well, stops well, handles well, is quiet, easy to drive, I could go on... Want a classic you can use as a daily ?. Buy a ( non rusty) Mercedes 190e and enjoy the experience.

Since my Mum is like Hyacinth Bucket, we had loads of old Mercs growing up. A 230E which would be quite valuable now. That had the dash mounted handbrake that my Dad tried to use as a choke on the test drive. 🤣 C180 1999 was next. Picked up from 'Carland' in Salford. Me and the salesman persuaded my Mum to buy it. 😆 Cool car and I really liked it but always breaking down! Similar sounding engine to that 190. Next a 2006 CDI Avantgarde diesel. That's my favourite of the bunch. People mock them but I love the styling, the ride is excellent and it's pretty nippy! 🙂

Massively expensive at launch, priced at the level of the class above, very little in the way of the luxuries and even cramped rear accommodation even back in the day. Hugely over engineered multi link rear suspension, superb build quality and ride quality shames modern cars, those plastic and trim have stood the test of time. It’s an S Class shrunk down with the same level of 80s Merc quality before they entered their crusty period…you missed the 90 degree opening bonnet BTW 😮. I’m very attached to the 32 year old one I own!

I guess you dont see the design the way I do lol.. The dashboard has this perfect design and texture... the boxy yet at the time most aerodynamic saloon as you guys say of the time and for todays standards does pretty decent in a wind tunnel.. The cosworth of course is what we all want. or even the sportline or just a manual 190E to adapt a evo II body kit on, throw in a roll cage and some tunning bits and off to a track... They are impossible to find in a manual here now for a price that makes any sense.. and even a clean auto is more than youd want to spend and go build/race

Why did they nick M-B badges? It was VW badges everywhere else. VW would send you a nice big VW badge key ring if you wrote and asked for one in an attempt to stop people nicking badges off the front of Golfs and Polos. I got sent one, I gave it to a beautiful red head girl called Helen who had a Beetle and she was very grateful. SAME TASTE! land rover, pre 1994 Saab, Mercedes!! YES SIR! best ever. And yes, they were kind of made with the Automatic in mind for the daily driver qualities, so it suits the car much more than it would suit a sports car. Because the wheels are UNSPRUNG WEIGHT, which makes a big difference in the overall drive and handling. I donno, been tempted for steel, but always had great drives with alloy saab 900 wheels on my saabs. I did dent one on a pothole, so yeah, tough wheels have their benefits. But for driving quality, I don't think it's even close - the alloys are better from engineering ride quality. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

One of the last proper Mercedes. I never owned a 190E, but I've had a few E class's. The 3.0 diesels are bullet proof. In answer to the Auto box question, most manuals were budget spec rep mobiles, where the aspiring rep would rather have a poverty spec manual than a mid spec Sierra - because he wanted the Merc badge. I actually ordered a Merc from new in the late 90's, and ordered a manual, because I had always driven a manual. The dealer to his credit, lent me an auto for the weekend - I changed the order. Quality of them was amazing. OK they rusted a bit, but I didn't keep one into old age, so that didn't bother me. These things took 4 days to build, when a Ford or Vauxhall was taking 1 day. That's why a certain type of person bought them. Sadly the JD Power survey tells us they aren't as well screwed together these days, but they do have models that are comparably more affordable than the 190E was for many. Great video Captain, you captured the baby Merc just right.

I don’t like them and I never have. The very first moment that you slide in, squat on that huge, flat, uninvolving, bland and downright unhelpful sear with the (doubtless hardwearing) but horrendously unwelcoming material and are immediately confronted by the nonsensically massive steering wheel that would be better suited to a paddle steamer than a car the message is abundantly clear. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO ENJOY THIS EXPERIENCE. They are cars that fulfilled a purpose, indeed fulfilled their true destiny, and as pointed out in the video that was to become mini cabs. Somewhere where mechanical longevity in rugged conditions would be a boon, hence their proliferation in North Africa. Or perhaps to lead a more pampered life taking women home from clubs in Scunthorpe at 2am, where the owner driver would be grateful for the nature of the seats as he hosed the vomit off them at the local 24 hour garage using the loyalty tokens gained from buying fuel for his school run contract. Which makes them admirable in a way. But as a car to own, to try and take pleasure from driving, to cherish? Non-starter. Which is ironic as the one thing they invariably do is start. All in all, if I had a choice of a 190 or a bad case of shingles being in my life, I’d take the shingles. At least I might get some pleasure from a high fever dream, that I’d be highly unlikely to get from the car.
