    Thank you! The '93 190E was the best of the series (my opinion) all the quirks and bugs had been worked out. Mercedes made a very nice version that year, 2.6 M103 engine, called the Sportline, special interior...very nice. I generally make new content when the cars hit the next service interval or something breaks. Alden

    Tip for ease of access - use a ring spanner (wrench for you colonials :) ) on a coupling nut inserted into the cap head plug. These tend to be conveniently shorter than an Allen adaptor.

    Great idea! I think it would work especially well with a ratcheting-type box wrench.("ring spanner" for those across the pond)

    Well at very least, check the level of the fluid. In the 1985 190E I had many years ago, I let the fluid get critically low. It made noises sometimes, and then *bang* ! And it coasted to a stop. The driveshaft spun freely and the diff made crunchy noises. And that was the end of my discount 190E all those years ago. I am a little more dedicated to service intervals these days. Alden

    Excellent video!! I learned a lot. My son and I just bought a 1993 Mercedes Benz 190E SPORTLINE 2.6 with black and red RECAROS, front and rear. Initially he wasn’t too excited but I think after watching your videos he has become very interested in learning how to wrench. Any way you could make a video on changing dash lights? Fixing the potentiometer in the dash? Thanks again!!

    93 is an excellent choice! Last of the W201, Mercedes had them all sorted out by then. I haven't done a dashboard repair on the 190E (yet?) so the best I can offer is to watch my Dash Flash video for the R129 300SL. A bit different than the 190, but some things are the same, like using the hook to *gently* pull the gauge cluster out. These older Benzes are an excellent idea for a father/son project car. Still lots of analog aspects to enjoy.

    Please continue to make more videos on the 190E. We have learned a lot. I reside in Indiana but we are preparing the car for my son to take it to his other side of the family in NJ… and it’s a 11 hour journey! We hope to enjoy the 4-M’s!!

    I'm glad they have been of help.The 190E, especially a 93, is a perfect choice for a highway trip. The suspension and aerodynamics of the body make it very stable at speed and the outward visibility is unrivaled by anything this side of a convertible. The thing that hobbles me from making lots more videos of my 190E is that I generally need something to break in order to show how I fixed it. And the car has been just dead reliable. So as service intervals come up I can show changing filters & fluids, but thankfully, I haven't had any large projects to tackle. (yet?)

    Hi there Sir! My apologies 'cuz what I'm about to ask is not related to this video, I really admire the ample details and sophistication that you put in your work. So here we go: 1) At cold (in the morning or if parked for like six hours), my 190E starts with a single crank, idles very fine but if I immediately hit the throttle, the engine almost dies due to a very poor acceleration, so I have to wait for like 5 to 10 minutes for it to warm up then everything gets back to normal and the car runs very fine (this issue only started like two months ago). 2) If the engine is warm or hot (let's say if parked for like half an hour), I have to crank like three to four times at the same time hitting the throttle before the car starts (this issue is there ever since I purchased this car) What could be the culprit in both cases? note that the fuel pump (BOSCH) is a recent purchase, like 500 miles ago.     It is hard to diagnose over the internet, but I can make some guesses. (as long as you realize they are just guesses) What year/engine is your 190E? 2.3 or 2.6? And if it is newer, say, a 90 or 91, that would make a difference. I am guessing something to do the cold start valve and the fuel pump relay. The cold start is essentially an extra fuel injector on the intake manifold that richens the mixture for cold starting. It does double-duty as an accelerator pump when you really get on the throttle for passing etc. Check out my fuel pump relay video. If the relay is bad, the car may be starting mostly on the cold start valve and once warmed up (and the CSV taken out of the circuit) the relay may be starving the regular injectors. Once it is warmed up, the CSV will only activate under heavy throttle and even then, if the other injectors are not stimulated, the engine will be sluggish and running lean. Just a guess.

Yes I already watched your fuel pump relay video, same for all your W201 related videos (which are really awesome by the way), so I'm now going to rewatch the one related to the fuel pump, follow your instructions and see if this coming weekend I can be able to get rid of this quite annoying issue.     any idea what i should do with ASD? i change the fluid in engine compartment in the tank of ASD , and i dont know if i should also change in diff when the fluid i my opinion should circulate ?

    Hi! I've never worked on an ASD car. That said, I would assume that ALL the fluid should be changed. The system is hydraulically operated, though electronically triggered And in this case it really MUST be GL-5 rated fluid for the limited slip differential friction clutches. Most fluid choices these days are synthetic, that's fine, just be certain it is for limited slip applications. Hope this helps. Alden

    bro I click on the "gear oil" link and it directs me to "Valvoline High Performance SAE 75W-90 Gear Oil 1 QT" do I just need the 1qt 75W-90? Also when I do the amazonconfirm fit I put in my 1988 mercedes benz 190 2.3 and it says it doesn't fit am I getting the wrong one?

    Just one quart of fluid will be plenty. Also the 75W-90 gear oil in fine. It doesn't show in the compatibility confirmation because the vendor of that on Amazon hasn't included it in their list. All the properties of the lubricant will be fine for a 1988 2.3 190E.

    Excellent question. If the differential fluid is never changed it will eventually cause the differential to fail. The fluid is special lubricating oil that coats the gears and bearings inside the differential. Without it, there is metal-to-metal contact, which will wear the parts out astonishingly fast. The fluid does get dirty over time, and also loses some of its' lubricating properties. It will eventually gum up the parts and cause gears to snap. The engine/driveshaft will no longer be able to transmit power to the wheels and the car will grind to a halt. Dangerous in traffic, expensive no matter where it happens. (The diff on my old 1985 failed years ago as I turned at the top of the hill by my house. If it failed 30 seconds earlier, I would have been broadside across a lane of oncoming cars. I managed to coast down to my driveway safely, but ever since then, I change diff fluid religiously on W201 cars.)

    They have somehow managed to make the modern stuff relatively odor-free, although the batch that drained out still had that feline mistake aroma. Years ago, it did help narrow down diagnostics possibilities: if the garage smelled like that, either the diff was leaking or Mr Bigglesworth needed his box changed.

    You were lucky ! That was the part that took me the longest. That, and cleaning the dirt & grime out of the hex-drive plugs to get the tools to seat properly.

    The 14mm hex-drive bit alone is 70mm tip to base (about 2 3/4") Then the thickness of the ratchet adds to that. The real problem was how the exhaust system was routed so close to the differential case. Definitely check yours to see if maybe the exhaust is mounted differently. Or you might have a slimmer 14mm setup for it. Good Luck! ALden

    Just one per car on the 190E. (I don't think Mercedes ever made a 4Matic W201) The newer & more powerful models might have a different version of diff. I've never seen what they used on the Cosworth 16V versions. I would hope a more robust unit.

    Thank you. Got a question the last time my transmission was flushed was back in 2006 with 111K on it I now have a 136K color is a brown pink what would you do if you were me just do a fluid change or a flush or other recommendation?

    I have seen no reference for that. I am using the Mercedes Maintenance Manual volume 2, supplement 6 revision for September 1985. Procedure 3501/1 for W201 chassis cars.There is no mention of a new drain plug being needed. There might be a newer revision, this is the manual that came with the car. Or replacing the plug might just be for the limited-slip versions which may have a bolt-type plug, rather than the large, hex-drive cap screw? Maybe a new plug is only recommended at the dealer if the customer is paying for it?

    @@jarosawsiudzinski5442 Very interesting. The W124 has a larger differential of a newer design. The thing I'm puzzled about is that on my R129, which is based on many of the W124 parts, it has the same plug arrangement as the W201 in this video. There is no provision for a seal or even a crush washer. Maybe different units were available in different markets. (these cars are all USA based) I will have to look for that if/when I do a W124 fluid change. Thanks! Alden

    Where do you see in the manual that the diff fluid must be changed every 15k miles ? Thats not nessecary. According to Mercedes, the oil never has to be changed. Neverthless, it makes sense. But its enough every 60k miles

    I get the 15K figure from page 21 of Mercedes "Maintenance Booklet for Passenger Cars Gasoline Engines" that came with the car.ref#201 584 11 95 (1984) They call out procedure 3501 which is Rear Axle -Oil Change. On page 12 of Mercedes "Maintenance Manual USA (passenger cars) names 3 intervals for service labeled "Inspection, Service and Maintenance". 3501 is shown in the "Inspection" interval. Honest, I don't just pull these things out of my hat. Alden

    I disagree. 80,000km is too long. Mercedes own maintenance manual (Vol 2, USA, September 1985) states page 5, and 12, "24 000km (15,000 miles)". Haynes Manual for 190 states page 22, "20 000km (12,000 miles ) or every 12 months." I know it sounds like a short interval, but that is what the reference books say. I don't just pull these numbers out of thin air.
