MENSUN BOUND is one of the world's leading marine archaeologists.
Watch Mensun as he talks about the extraordinary story of how Ernest Shackleton's Endurance, the most famous shipwreck was found.
Mensun will be talking with Jo Cooper, Senior Curator, Avian Anatomical Collections at the Natural History Museum.
The story of Shackleton’s Endurance and the expedition it carried is one of the most extraordinary in the history of exploration. The discovery of the ship, over a hundred years later and ten thousand feet down, is more than just an astonishing sequel. It is a tale just as powerful, and one which redefines the meaning of impossible”
SIR MICHAEL PALIN
“The gripping and inspiring story of an extraordinary achievement by a brilliant team. In spellbinding prose, Mensun Bound narrates how Shackleton's Endurance was located 3,000 metres below sea level in one of the most inhospitable parts of our planet. Peppered throughout with captivating tales of Shackleton and his crew, it is a must read for any armchair explorer”

THE SHIP BENEATH THE ICE
The Discovery of SHACKLETON’S ENDURANCE
by MENSUN BOUND
THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF HOW THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS SHIPWRECK WAS FOUND.
On 21 November 1915, the ENDURANCE, Ernest Shackleton’s ship, finally succumbed to the immense pressures of the surrounding ice. Its crew watched in silence as the stern rose twenty feet in the air and then, just like that, it was gone. Over a century later, an audacious plan to locate the ship was hatched. It would finally succeed in March 2022, to headlines all over the world.
In THE SHIP BENEATH THE ICE, marine archaeologist MENSUN BOUND gives a blow-by-blow account of the two dramatic expeditions he led to find the ship in what Shackleton called ‘the most hostile sea on Earth’. As with Shackleton, Bound too experienced failure and despair, and at times his own ship was on the cusp of being frozen in ice, much like the Endurance.
As one of the world’s foremost experts on the Endurance, Bound includes previously untold stories of Shackleton’s epic survival and fascinating details about his iconic ship. Complete with numerous photos from the original expedition in 1914-17, as well as from the wreck on the seafloor, this book is the perfect gift for armchair explorers everywhere.
MENSUN BOUND has lectured widely for the British Council and a range of museums, universities, learned societies, archaeological organizations and cruise ships. From 1994 to 2013, he was Triton Fellow in Maritime Archaeology at St Peter’s College, Oxford University. He was Director of Exploration on the 2019 and 2022 expeditions to locate Shackleton’s Endurance.
