Director William Wyler follows the crew of The Memphis Belle as they prepare for a mission. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is the first United States heavy bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe. This iconic and now beautifully restored film was released on April 13, 1944.
The dramatic 16 mm color film of actual battles was made by three cinematographers, including First Lieutenant Harold J. Tannenbaum. Tannenbaum, a veteran of World War I, was killed in action during the filming when the bomber he was in was shot down over France on April 16, 1943.
The film was directed by Major William Wyler, narrated by Eugene Kern, and had scenes at its station, RAF Bassingbourn, photographed by Hollywood cinematographer Captain William H. Clothier. It was made under the auspices of the First Motion Picture Unit, part of the United States Army Air Forces. The film actually depicted the next to last mission of the crew on May 15, 1943, and was made as a morale-building inspiration for the Home Front by showing the everyday courage of the men who manned these bombers.

My wife would say the same thing. Lol
I was blessed to be able to fly in the movie-version of the Memphis Belle, then be at the Air Force Museum for the unveiling of the real Memphis Belle after she was refurbished. I had goose bumps just being there. What a magnificent ship and crew.
Thanks America from the UK.

BECAUSE OF THOSES BOMBERS, YOU HAD A FREE, IF NO YOU WILL BE OCCUPED BY GERMAN AIR FORCES. D'ONT FORGET THAT YOUR COUNTRY KILLED A NUMBER OF DEATHS MORE THAN WHAT GERMAN KILLED IT
love you all thank you
Bookmarked - when I need courage to take very modest risks, I can re-watch their supreme courage for energy and inspiration. Great reminder that my struggles are comparatively nothing.
Thank you for the story of "The Memphis Belle."
America loves you all.❤🇺🇸
Thank you so much! 👍
I saw "The Movie" Memphis Belle B-17, in Spokane, and it was surprisingly quiet when it took off.
33:20 "Here's Ol' Bill. Pretty good airplane when it took off. Lost its nose. Lost its Navigator. Bombardier wounded. Top turret gunner and pilot hit. Hydraulic system shot out. No brakes. No Flaps. But O'l Bill came back"
outstanding service thank you
You can watch the documentary on the resurrection of the real Memphis belle. Yes it's on display. And it was a labor of love. And she did fly one more time. Outstanding job. And I thank the good people overseas that salut her. The belle is restored and ready for one more run deep. ❤❤❤❤❤
Very nice.
Lest We Forget
This was unusual being color for the time. Colored film required different cameras that were larger and heavier I believe and very expensive film.
97👍🏻☘HELLO LION
Old bills tail gunner was awarded a silver star but KIA 2 months later old right waist gunner would return to the US and the pilot would fly more missions being forced to ditch in the north sea before being rescued by the Royal Navy
The U.S. joined the war after financing both sides for quite awhile.
Huge propaganda. A B-24 Liberator was the first aircraft to attain 25 missions. Unfortunately, it crashed in Iceland with the loss of many high ranking USAAF officers. That of course was kept on the down low.
