Wenn Buzz Osbourne seine mittlerweile ergraute Mähne schüttelt, bleibt kein Shirt trocken: Melvins gehören seit Jahrzehnten zu Pionieren des Alternative Rock und verkörpern immer noch dieselbe Spielfreude wie 1983.
1983 gründet Gitarrist und Sänger Buzz Osborne gemeinsam mit dem zukünftigen Mudhoney-Bassisten Matt Lukin und dem Drummer Mike Dillard in Montesano im US-Bundestaat Washington die Band Melvins als High School-Band. Nachdem man sich erst einmal mit Covern von Hendrix und The Who ausgetobt hat, konzentriert sich das Trio auf superschnellen Hardcore-Punk. 1984 geht Dillard und Dale Crover übernimmt die Drums, an denen er heute noch immer sitzt.
Mit der Zeit halten neben Punkrock-Einflüssen von Black Flag und Co. auch Elemente aus Metal und Hard Rock à la Black Sabbath, KISS und Alice Cooper Einzug ins Klangbild der Melvins. Kurt Cobain war Riesenfan der Band, war aber beim Vorspielen als Gitarrist so nervös, dass er nichts zustandebrachte und den Job nicht bekam.
Mitte der Achtziger legten Melvins mit Bands wie Green River, Skin Yard, Malfunkshun und Soundgarden den Grundstein für jenen Sound, der Anfang der Neunziger als Grunge um die Welt gehen sollte. Melvins blieben der Szene auch später eng verbunden, so half Crover Nirvana das eine oder andere Mal im Studio und später auch live bei einer Tour mit Sonic Youth aus. 1988 siedelten Osborne und Crover nach San Franciso um. Lukin blieb in Washington und gründete die Band Mudhoney. 1990 vermittelte Osborne Dave Grohl an Nirvana.
1991 gingen Melvins auf Europatournee, in den Folgejahren tourten sie mit Nirvana, den Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, KISS und vielen anderen Größen. 1997 wurde die Band, deren Sound alles andere als massentauglich ist, von ihrem damaligen Label Atlantic fallengelassen, 1999 landeten Melvins auf Mike Pattons Label Icepac Recordings. Nach vielen Besetzungswechseln am Bass ist seit 2016 Steven McDonald eine Konstante am Viersaiter.
Der Sound der Melvins liegt irgendwo zwischen Grunge, Noise, Doom Metal und Stoner Rock, und die Band hat zwar alle diese Musikrichtungen beeinflusst, jedoch lassen sie sich nicht einem dieser Genres zuordnen.

Dale Crover is honestly one of the best drummers. KingBuzzo is a riff machine and Steve always drops a solid groove. the Melvins are mandatory, in every collective.

ok im a die hard melvins fan and ive followed them for a decade or more now and this current lineup of buzz, dale and stephen brings suck a wild and fun energy to this badass band!! see you melvins in a month!

My son at 18, who is a die hard hip hop guy. His first time seeing them live was mesmerised and couldn’t understand the amount of noise he was hearing. Mandatory Melvins.

Steve is a LEGEND all by himself...He made albums that are still in print and considered classic while he was in High School! That was not a revved up intro to Honey Bucket, but the song A History of Bad Men, which was featured on Breaking Bad. Also, Dale had to take a lotta time off after this...so this was one of the last shows recorded properly with the original lineup!

Worst vocal performance ever. Actually I’m huge fan “music of melvins” but I always thought a man who singing their song actually worst part of band. Sorry mate it is what it is.
How people don't recognize them as one of the best and influential bands is fucking beyond me. Literally one of the bets drummers in the world, and a man that has made so many songs he should be exalted by the common public. Yes, the bass players have bee replaced over the years, but they each do their job.

They play in tune as well as not being sloppy. Never read an article where Buzz has said otherwise but i don't read many interviews because i don't care that much. I know what i've heard live though.
