Melbourne’s Final RVB Horn Comeng Service

Hello and welcome to my channel. I am a train enthusiast located in Victoria, Australia and just want to share some of my journeys with KZread. Please feel free to Comment your opinions and Subscribe to my channel :)
In this video, we ride a Comeng of its type on its final hoorah. The last ever two services with an RVB horn. A sad service but a fun time nonetheless. After terminating at Craigieburn, the train shunted off as empty cars to Craigieburn Sidings and then the workshops to have its RVB Horn removed in place for the more modern Zollner Horn. Hope you enjoy the video!

Isnt it cute how the driver blew the horn alot. The RVB's sound so happy and cheerful. Unfortunately all good things come to an end. R.I.P to the RVB's Comengs 😭

Not only will I miss the RVV trains for their amazing sound but also as a blind person it made it so easy to figure out what kind of a train it was before it was close enough for me to tell by the other sounds it makes. Thanks so much, our dear train opperators, for making everything so uniform and boring 😭

it won't be the same without the RVB horns, they were a unique feature of comengs, and for me at least it will take some getting used to not hearing the rvb's anymore. Thankfully a while back i was able to ride a comeng with the RVB horn on the sandringham line and got some footage of the rvb horn blowing

The RVB’s 3 chime whistles were an iconic sound to Melbourne. They were like a musical instrument when they were working correctly, everyone knew the sound, they were the voice of the comeng trains virtually. Removing them from the comeng and replacing them with louder and a more unpleasant whistle that doesn’t even suit them means Melbourne will never sound the same again. I wish they’d fit an artificial horn to them so at least they still retain the same sound, ect. But altogether I WISH THAT THE NEW HORN TRIAL WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. But there’s nothing we can do about safety in the present day.

Just in January, I took a ride on an RVB Comeng. Though I didn't give it much thought at the time, I find it sad that the traditional RVB is gradually disappearing and being replaced by more modern (but imo worse) horns. Beyond the sound of the trains sitting idle, this distinctive feature of Melbourne's Comeng trains are more than a horn. It is a piece of history.

Knowing something like this silly horn upgrade would occur, I managed to record RVB’s on some of the now scrapped EDI’s and Alstoms, half of the current Alstoms, and ALL but 5 of the Stage 2 EDI’s still in service today! It’s been a pleasure to ride and witness these epic horns, the Comeng won’t be the same without them. RIP RVB 3 Chime horns :(

The new sound is frightening and has no character. Makes it hard to tell which trains are passing (except for the comengs unique traction motors.) Anyway hopefully a RVB can be saved for a preserved comeng in the future? 🤩🤞🎺

Thankfully someone caught it shunting to Craigieburn yard. What is it with this country, I get there has to be renewal but we always replace good quality (and Australian built) products with far inferior ones. Take the x'Trap's and Siemens for example, yes the x'Trap's are reliable but they have FAR worse ride quality than the Comeng's. And it took them nearly a decade to get the Siemens to be reliable. The RVB's might have been loud but they actually sounded nice, whereas the new ones are loud and sound terrible. They actually make you shriek when you're close to them, well they used to at least anyway. Still sound terrible. Yet another part of the Comeng's as I remember gone. I'll miss them.

Coil sprung secondary suspension is what you get when you order a train built on a budget. That being said the X'Trapolis fleet is by far the most reliable. The RVBs were not loud enough to comply with the Australian rolling stock horn regulation, which is why they were replaced with the new Zollner variant. Like them or not, the Zollner is fully compliant. The biggest advantage with the Zollner is its sharp penetrating tone, which cuts through ambient noise much better than the more 'whistle-like' RVB tone.
