My father was a fisherman and late mother was a rice farmer. Owning any piece of land or field is important for future generations but it kept the children alive hopefully not turn their back on their heritage when they become adults. It’s hard over there, but in America immigrant kids grew up taking the good life for granted and disrespect their parents journey to flee extreme poverty. I don’t want to get too deep and cynical but the harshness of both worlds are night and day. We don’t know how the others live until we are educated.

I feel so happy that Rivers sourcing from Tibet feeds millions of families in our neighbor countries all the way to Pacific Ocean. Tibet is the resource of Major rivers in Asia. politically, economically and socially Rivers are one of the most important resource of the countries and its peoples lives. Mekong River is the one which floods through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam all the way to Ocean. But we have 8 great Rivers sourced in Himalayas in Tibet. The great Indus River which flows by Pakistan. The great Ganges River which flows by India. The great Brahmaputra River which flows by Bangladesh. The great Salween River which flows by Burma. The great Yangtse River which flows by China. The great Yellow River which flows by China also. The great Mekong River which flows by by 5 countries. Starting from Tibet through China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam all the way to Ocean.

I admire that, not wasting food, either give away or make into another dish. You are a good example of consumers that are conscious and aware of third world struggles. The sources are limited the farmers have to live without and improvise but they are humble unlike Western or materialistic ways. It’s the simple life Mekong is essential for families and trade.

My Thai friend called the river “Khong” and I said, “You mean Mekong?” She then corrected me, “Mae Nam Khong.” It seems Mae means mother, Nam means water and Khong is an ancient word meaning big river. So “Mae Nam Khong” translates to “Mother Of All Rivers” or “Mother Of All Waters”. It seems foreigners corrupted the name to Mekong. The word Khlong means a canal and is much smaller. Great video, I wish it was in 4K; I suspect that video compression has reduced the final technical quality to something more like 576p rather than the claimed 720p.

It seems that you and your friend think that Mekong is a Thai{lLao} river only... The "foreigners" from South Vietnam are clearly pronouncing the name of the river as Me Kong, the Khmer in Cambodia are calling it Mekong{k} and so on. The name of that river and its meaning in Thai is quite poetic for sure but for the most people living on and from the river so to speak the name is Mekong.
