Singapore didn't manage to import a lot of sand from Cambodia as Singapore has wished. Local developments of the new casino cities and the capital needed a lot more sand than Singapore wanted hence exporting was banned to curb rising sand cost.

Rich western countries don't want poor countries to develop. They rather give you just enough aid to keep you alive and weak so that you would perpetually dependent on them. It's a form of neo-colonialism. Whereas China will assist the poor countries in their development without strings attached. Because China is powering forward to help poor countries develop, the west goes on a relentless blitz to demonize China.

I do admire the effort to produce this documentary and I admit I learnt a lot of things. But there were several things mentioned in this video that were not true. E.g. 1. Tatay Dam is not sitting along side the Mekong river it's actually in Koh Kong which is in the Southwest of Cambodia. 2. The flood in October 2020 was also not caused by rainfall that flew from the Mekong river either. Because the flooded area was on the Southwest side of Phnom Penh which nowhere near the Mekong or Tonle Sap stream at all.

The Chinese-built dam they profile, Stung Tatay, isn't anywhere near the Mekong river. Also, Cambodia recently agreed not to build any dams on the Mekong. Many of the problems are due to Chinese dams in Laos and further upriver in PRC.

This fisher man is very funny like saying, “ we don’t know know where the fish gone”. When 10 years ago, this type of people use electric to shock those fish and they didn’t mention it.

So many dams have been built in western/developed countries. CNA of course gives us new insight, but i can see what they want to show.

I'm curious as to why this docu spent so long setting up the issues but only offered a small scale solar solution for rural Mekong communities? As a freshwater ecologist i think that hydropower might be one of the most destructive forms of power but there isn't a clear alternative in this case

i don't understand what does hydropower dam in koh kong have to do with mekong river, it's literally on the other side of the country.

But what good is development if you don’t have a nation of the people in the forefront of its progress? Look at this country, it’s gone through hell and has taken decades to remotely recover from its past. So many poor and so little opportunity to even remotely make a decent living honestly for many in the country. All I see here is creation of a larger gap between the rich and the poor. If they want to get this belt made it better come with perks for Khmer people for generations to come. I doubt that’s the case here though...

Bascially all the renewable energy has its problem but the general public just want to hear the good things.

In the west, provision is made where-by the fish are able to circumvent the dams and continue their journey upstream.

Tatay Dam Hydropower was not built across the Mekong River, But it built in Koh Kong Province​ in Southwest of cambodia Which is not relate to the Mekong River. Please check it again.

This is the 21st century, people, regardless of their race, ethnicities and culture want a better living standard. And the only way to achieve that is to industrialise, and in order to industrialise, one must have sufficient amount of energy and hydroelectric is perfect as it is renewable. These are not animals we are talking about you know? They should not live in abject poverty just to preserve the way of life of their ancestors, they deserve respect and are not to be gawked upon by tourists from the developed countries like some exotic beasts.

the woman who was showing her damage motorcycle was choosing her words carefully trying not offend those highly connected development project which are contributing to the floods.

There are dozen of dams along the Mekong river from Lao to China which kills us. Cambodia needs the domestic source of energy supplies since over 60% of energy supplies are imported and that cost the people a lot. The energy cost per kilo watt in Cambodia cost perhaps more than LA.

The fundamental issue is human population growth and human desires with increasing consumption habits. River basin development and national development need to be looked at holistically. Freezing other parameters to discuss apparent impacts assuming only one parameter is operating can give misleading results. Given population growth and increasing material demand are inevitable, what is left is for those in government and regulators to mitigate and balance impacts, until the earth cannot sustain such demands anymore.

Under the leadership of Hun Sen ,Cambodia has been developed so fast (corruption). His family and friends are super rich while we're living on shoestrings.

So you mean is not letting us develop is that what you mean? You can’t blame it on one person. We have to change our perspective on how we execute the development of our country. Blaming on him doesn’t make the country better, overthrowing him also doesn’t make it better. We just have to teach the younger generation not to be involved with corruption. The corruption isn’t only an issue with modern Cambodia, the corruption happened centuries ago in Cambodia and has been passed on throughout generations. And if we can teach the younger generations to not do it then it’s great. So don’t blame everything on him. Even if his decision isn’t very correct some times but he’s human and human makes mistakes. I mean without his help, you probably won’t be alive right now. And if you still is not convinced by what I am saying, maybe go lead the country if you think he’s doing a terrible job. Because if you go to school which I think you do, then you would learn that leading a group especially a group that is 16 million people isn’t easy.

All we see are future flood victims just like we saw in Laos. Not worth the effort when your natural beauty environment are gone, your own citizens were forced to abandon their houses which they had called homes for centuries and end up being flood victims. The benefit? Only a portion of the $ generated from these damps will go to the pocket of the corrupt government. The majority of the money will go to the company that built and invested the damps, most likely China. The majority of Cambodia citizen get nothing but just paying monthly electricity bills. Finding fish down stream become harder for the local and paying more electricity bills make life more miserable for the Cambodia citizens. The winner? The company and the corrupted Cambodia government. The citizens just need to voice their opinions and " Say No " to the damp if they have any choice. Sad.

When people criticize modernization of underdeveloped countries, especially the western medias, one argument they usually used is that building this will destroy local living style. Well, why don’t you backwards to the living style your ancestors had before the industrialization? I believe no human beings should live in this kind of condition unless they choose to. Unfortunately, that fact is that those fish men do not have a choice. I hope their kids will have a choice. Yes, the history of human being is the history of how human fight against the “nature mother”. Until very recently, the Industrial Revolution granted human the power to modify our environment what could not be imagined a few hundreds years ago. We are agree that this kind of power should be used with caution. However, please stop using this argument, it is nonsense from the point of view of the people living in underdeveloped areas.

Well there’s other ways to produce electricity. More efficient governments have realized that hydroelectric dams destroys the natural environment for fish so realizing this some governments are removing dams and will not build any new dams and have started to reconstruct the rivers back into their natural state to bring back nature and life that lives in the rivers. So all these projects and man made infrastructure projects on and in the Mekong River changing the natural flow and depths can say goodbye to the fish and to life as you know it. Once it’s filled It’s all over !

It’s a double edged sword here? Industrialization of Cambodia will also be the demise of their wetlands and its eco systems over progress for more houses and electricity? It doesn’t seem like a national interest of the people but more so for capital. The floods will continue, rural people will be displaced, and outside foreign investors will continue to pour in. Don’t mistaken progress as an absolute positive. The citizens in these areas suffer the most with a lack of support from their government during flooding . I help donate what I can but this the price for progress.

I thought the Mekong River Commission has got sway over its development. After all the Rhine River Commission was able to get ALL nations involved to sit together to decide the best solution for all countries through which the river flows through. Though, it was reported that when Mekong Commission was formed, France , then deliberately refused China's membership? In which case, the Commission should have invited China to sit in. Even when ADB supported the creation of the Myanmar port of Da Wei under the concept of the Mekong Sub-regional development, Vietnam thought with India and Japan, the proposed rail-road link across yo Danang would work. Now it is obviously failed to take off, since even India or Japan could generate that among of cargo to justify the link. Hence, politics often played an unsupportable project and all suffer!

🤣🤣there are reasons solar is not reliable energy especially in tropical environment rain, typhoon is one problem, cost for repair and the frequency/possibility of damage is another one, also the battery will be degraded. so yes, people can use it with compensation by the govt in poor villages, its totally useless in city and any places required development secondly, i alway thought it is hypocrisy the west(and the world society) require environment protection and slow down development while not paying that state to preserve the environment. the world should pay those countries for not harvest the forest, or destroy the environment, not using ethnic demand to force it lastly, in order to "protect" the river, govt should assist people to build fish farm, not just let them fish in the river, as we can see in the vid, they catch everything even the small fish

I work in the solar industry. Big company are willing to cut down trees and relocate the locals to make room for solar pv modules then promote themselves as being green, boosting how much CO2 reduce, how much tree saved, contributing to the enviroment and all the bullshit.

Instead of installing power plants in Cambodia, Khmer government should've resort to free energy sources like solar energy. Destroying Cambodia landscape for foreign INC blueprint which you / we don't even know it will work 100 percent. By the look of this documentary, these Foreigners INC failed....

Tonle sap was filled with human waste. So many people living on the lake. Yuck 🤮! The people on the lake catch every thing from baby to adult. They must move on.
