Meklit Hadero: The unexpected beauty of everyday sounds | TED

Музыка

Using examples from birdsong, the natural lilt of emphatic language and even a cooking pan lid, singer-songwriter and TED Fellow Meklit Hadero shows how the everyday soundscape, even silence, makes music. "The world is alive with musical expression," she says. "We are already immersed."

What an inspirational speech it is! Highly organized and well-articulated speech presented with practical experiences from real life. Beyond her professional career as a singer, songwriter, and composer, I really appreciate her excellent presentation skill. It is both informative and entertaining at the same time. I also appreciate the way how she expressed the true nature, the richness, and the quality of Amharic language. Great job!!!

She has read my mind. I always reflect on the salsa vamp, the cowbell and timbale dialogue, that I heard as a child in the streets of Caracas, not knowing what it was I was hearing. My whole life that clank, chicky-clank followed me around in every industrial situation I encountered. Great talk

This speech really makes you think! It’s clear that humans are immersed in music from the very first days of their lives when babies hear their parents’ lullabies and other everyday sounds but studies show that even unborn children can hear. Humans are biosocial creatures and music plays an important role both on the side of biology like the rhythm of our heartbeat and on the side of sociology and culture when every nation values music. It was really nice to listen to this comprehensive speech and I couldn’t keep from remembering one vivid example of the use of everyday sound in music - When Mama Isn't Home from the Oven Kid. It is really nice to see how such routine sounds grow into something more.

When I still had group therapy in a new building still partially under construction, sometimes there were mild clanking noises coming from the the radiators. It wasn't until I studied Tuvan/Mongolian overtone singing that I could appreciate metallic sounds. When you observe their overtones the rather sharp clanking noises become rainbows in sound form... This TEDtalk reminded me of that moment of enjoyment, inspiring!

It's amazing that we can hear music even without it. Today I heard a strange melody while I was doing household chores and then it turned out to be "the everyday soundscape". What surprised me the most after watching is the fact that there is no absolute silence. It sounds shocking because you don't think about that your body has its own rhythm that you usually don't listen to until the moment when other sounds don't distract you. Thank you 😊

This woman brings a smile to my face and exudes a delightful, positive energy. This performance means more to me than just music; it embodies life itself. Amidst the rush of our daily lives, we often forget to savor its beauty. The world is inherently beautiful, yet we overlook its wonders. We chase fleeting emotions and sometimes harbor unnecessary anger towards the world and our circumstances. However, we must realize that we are the architects of our own lives. Embracing and being receptive to the world can be challenging; it requires us to listen, observe, and appreciate what it offers. Instead of taking things for granted, we should cherish them. Whenever you find yourself somewhere, take a moment to pause, inhale the fresh air, unwind, and discover something small that brings a smile to your face. Your life will be a bit easier, for sure! Love yourself and love the world!
