@@lukro. Having a strong foundation in jazz does affect skill because its intricacies and complicated patterns as well as an emphasis on dynamics. The most talented of the top drummers in the world and in history spent significant time playing jazz in their earlier years (that is if they didn't just play jazz their whole career or most of it). Sure, some people pick up skills quicker than others but no one is just good at drumming without putting in the work and jazz forces you to put in the work regarding the fundamentals and technical aspects. And of course, there are some drummers who are outstanding in their genres who don't have jazz in their background, maybe even considered some of the best, but you'll find the that the top drummers in those same genres that have early jazz experience are even more talented. The best drummers without jazz experience may be favorites within their genre and great to listen to and watch, and even play incredible things, but no drummer will be as versatile, adaptable, fluent, or expressive as a drummer with a jazz base. If a drummer doesn't have that but practices and focuses on those same fundamentals and technical aspects, without playing jazz, that could be an exception.

A real kit-master knows the value of stick-clicks, rim-shots, and rests. I know this is a cymbal channel, but this man has been my gold standard for what I want to achieve as a rhythm composer. The feel is so in the pocket, it's insane.

@Andrew Vaillancourt No they're not. A rimshot is hitting the rim and Snare at the same time. cross sticking is resting the tip of the stick on the Snare and using the butt to tap on the rim. Are you trolling?

Clay's drumming was phenomenal on their newest album
This man is so creative with his drumming. Technical and he knows just how to fill out the softer guitar parts which is perfect for a band like Polyphia.
This 50 (something) y.o. music-lover randomly stumbled upon Polyphia recently. In a band of obvious virtuosos, Clay stands out as really being key to their sound and what they do together. It takes a steady hand to support the kind rhythmic gymnastics the other three so often take part. And I love the way Clay gets often gets in with the guitar riff, not just in with the bass. Both are very Bonham, to me. All the same, I'm more reminded of Zach Hill than anyone. Great, highly original stuff all around. It's been a while since I've been shocked by anything new. I thank them for that. The whole band seems very open about their process too. Also very cool. Finding bands like these guys is why I still bother.

I'm not even a drummer and I remain envious of his cymbal lineup. It's beautiful.

I really like his cymbal choices and specifically how he uses all of them in this song.
love the way he counts the beat with his mouth 🔥
Ridiculously tight drumming, amazing performance.
I love this song so much, maybe my favorite instrumental ever in terms being a guitar player and jamming... nice to see the drums are just as epic as the guitar.
This guy won WWE Royal Rumble 2019 too!!!
Dude will always be one of my favorite drummers. So clean!
Bravo! Absolutely one of the best drummers I’ve ever heard! Timing is impeccable! Creativity is off the charts!

Very technical but sits in the pocket so nice 👍🏻
I'm just amazed...
Namaste Clay, thanks for playing! 🕉🙏🌀
Whether he is a god or not at drums. Look how much fucking fun he has.... that's all that matters. Video 10/10 even on mute lol
Clay always good!! Keep clean~
Watching the complexity of this and then watching Clay play “Playing God” now shows just how much he has improved in just 3 short years.

That overhead lighting makes those Pure Alloy hats look unbelievably sexy..

More of him plz
The finger tap on the drum at 2:31 when he’s using the stick to strike the side so fucking slick!!!
dudes a sick drummer
Clay legit looks like the one jock in high school that would beat up all the bullies for the bullied kids. Other than that though, this man is insane.
Tight!
Shame Clay doesn't get more attention, he's up there with Gavin Harrison in his expressions and he keeps it insanely tight.
Yaaasssss 🙌
I see some Coheed and Cambria tattoos. One among the fence, my dude!
That section at 1:32 though! He turned the snare into something else.
Technique can be learned, this level of tasteful playing..either you got it or you don't.

that snare sound is better than the original song
