Megalania: The Giant Australian Lizard

Megalania (Megalania prisca or Varanus priscus) is an extinct giant goanna or monitor lizard. They were part of a megafaunal assemblage that inhabited southern Australia during the Pleistocene. They seem to have disappeared sometime after 50,000 years ago. The first aboriginal settlers of Australia might have encountered them.

Fun fact: Komodo dragons can grow into the sizes of megalanias under the right conditions but it takes hundreds of years, so genetic engineering can definitely bring back megalanias but we dont have the technology to do so,yet

@@ray-0249, what do you mean? How can the Saltie croc and other crocodilians of over 1 european tonne still survive very well, as in other millions of years, but in the case of monitor lizards, in Australia, there is not enough food for them, except for hand sized and arm sized ones? What the hell, the humans and dingoes didn't eat that much, to bring the Megalania and Thylacoleo to not have any food left. Also, Megalania is just 2 times longer, and only 10 times heavier than the average Komodo Dragon, and because monitor lizards, lizards, legless lizards, snakes, turtles and crocodilimorphs can survive at least 6 months and up to 3 years without food and water, they can eat anything, anywhere, they can and want, without complaining. Those are great ambushers, and it is weird that they got extinct. If the top 3 largest marsupials that weightened more than 1 european tonne didn't go extinct because of the more scarce water and dessertification, the Megalania wouldn't had got extinct either, even if we count to present times, with modern introduced placentals.

I've been fascinated with Varanus species (monitor lizards) for many years and I used to sell a couple of the species (Nile and Savannah monitors) when I owned a wholesale reptile business several years ago. Varanus priscus (Megalania) must have looked very impressive and frightening for any potential humans encountering them in the wild because they dwarfed the largest extant monitor lizard, the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), which can grow to 10' long and potentially 200-300lbs. If there were Aboriginal people in Australia when Varanus priscus was still living, I suspect that they contributed to it's extinction, either directly or indirectly, because us humans are very skilled at wiping out species, just like in the case of the huge flightless Moa birds of New Zealand (the largest species was almost 7' at the back and weighed up to 500lbs) which was hunted to extinction within 100 years of the arrival of the Maori people, which subsequently led to the extinction of the bird's natural predator and the previous largest eagle on earth, the Haast's eagle.
