Megabass P5 Windbuster vs G Loomis NRX+ 872S?! Which One Is Better?

We have been getting a lot of questions about the new G Loomis NRX+ 872S and how it compares to the Megabass P5 Windbuster. Today, Griff and I sit down and discuss both rods in detail to hopefully answer all the questions!

Just watched this video again and the information you guys provided was super helpful and informative. I think this is a topic that you could keep doing that would provide excellent content for us non pro anglers to consume. It would be awesome to watch a you guys compare the new version of the NRX to the prior generation, or the new Steez compared to the prior Steez, or the new version of the Expride to the prior generation Expride, to help highlight/illustrate how the new version and the prior version are alike and how they are different. Knowing and understanding what the companies change when they do a new release, if anything, is really helpful to consumers. As you eluded to below, it sounds like the old 872s and the new 872s are different animals, and it would be helpful to know how / what. Really appreciate you guys and the content you make and share.

FYI the NRX+ 872s is 3.36oz and the Windbuster is 3.68oz. I have both and have weighed them obviously. Griff is unfortunately wrong about the P5 being lighter. To be fair that's pretty much splitting hairs.

Griff’s not wrong. He’s giving his personal feeling on the rod. Your personal opinion can’t be wrong 🤦 The NRX+ definitely has a heavier feel in hand - whether technically it is or isn’t. Now, to be fair it also had a Stella on it, which is a full ounce heavier than an exist. But the rods have a completely different feel - no matter what the actual ounces are. I’m glad you weighed them. You probably balanced them on your finger too.

I am looking for a single (and only) Spinning Rod in my arsenal to be used for regular drop shot use and other bottom bait setups running braided with a flouro leader. That being said do you feel the Windbuster (as a dedicated bottom & drop shot rod) could also double as a decent Great Lakes walleye rod during early season (Spring & early Summer) at 35-40ft depths for running Erie Dearies, harness baits, and an occasional walleye swim baits?

Love everything about it -except it has zero load and casting timing has to be perfect otherwise it’s getting slammed into the water about 10 yards away. And this is the medium/fast. It’s also suspiciously rated for 1/8 a 3/8. It’s double that. More like 1/4 - 3/4. Haven’t found a lot of reviews for the 842s except for some obvious sponsors. Would like to see this one reviewed.

But the 872 is clearly a jig and worm rod . The wind buster is clearly not so Why . But more specifically . I have 3 NRX and will not be purchasing more . Not that I don’t love them . But they have priced themselves out of contention without moving forward in tech . At least up here . Price wise the wind buster compares with a GLX . Not a NRX

When you're saying 3000 size reel in regards of Shimano, you are talking about 3000mhg or c3000? Because c3000 is a deeper spool 2500, but 3000mhg is a 4000 size body with 2500 size spool.

G.Loomis definitely lacks a lot of "sex appeal" cosmetically. But they've always been designed with more traditional American styling. Shakeyhead is lighter in power, and really a bottom contact only rod. Windbuster is more powerful and gives you the versatility of using it for reaction.

if you are not using bottom contact baits with the NRX then it a waste of money. I wacky rig both NRX and Expride and they both feel the same. The difference comes when your bait is touching bottom. For me, NRX don't really blow me away but is an upgrade from Expride.

I'll take the nrx cause its warranty is just better. Megabass got a wacked warranty. The megabass probably feels "lighter" because of the balance. The way the nrx blank is design, the mass is concentrated just above the reel seat and always feel a little tip heavy even though the rod is super light. I can say if you put the exist on the nrx, it'll feel very tip heavy.
