Dude i know this video is super old but thank you so much. This was my favorite game as a kid and now im 40 and want to crush it. No interest in WR runs with a fam but I’m 32 and change and would love to go sub 30 just to show myself I can. This video has been a massive help. Thank you very much for putting some love into it and showing me how it’s done.

Hey Duckfist, I realize this is an older video now and speedrunning techniques are always changing. I just wanted to say though that it was a very well done video, I have seen you do various runs on Games Done Quick videos. You always came across as someone who was very technical and knowledgeable about the game they were playing. It would have blown my mind to know stuff like this was possbile back in the 90s when playing it. It is really nice of you to take the time to post a 4hr video showing these tricks. It's like a magician showing how he pulls a rabbit out of the hat to a normal player. Good luck to you in future speedruns and may your times improve.

I quit learning this game because I couldn't figure out the zips...but this explains them so well I got Crash man immediately after watching. Also shout outs to your Ninja Gaiden 2 tutorial I found Googling, taught me everything and after dozens of hours of practice and 400 runs I'm knocking on 11:00.

You deserve more attention and I wish you released more videos. You're one of 3 of my favorite speedrunners. No one else took this much time and patience explaining all those small little glitches.

I accidentally deleted someone's comment (sorry!), it was a question, so here it is with my response. "I'm trying to do the zip in Heat Man stage with Item 3, but the Item 3 quickly disappears after I place it. What am I doing wrong"? The Item 3 is probably disappearing because it's attaching to the right wall, and not the left wall - you are facing the wrong direction. Remember that when you grab a ladder, your direction changes. When falling from the previous screen you're racing right. Holding Down as you gain control on the next screen, you will grab the ladder and face left automatically, and pressing B at this point should put the Item 3 on the right wall.

Hey! I've been using this video a LOT to learn the strats for the zips run, and it's been VERY useful! Thank you for your work! However, I stumbled upon something that may or may not be noteworthy in my own practice sessions. In Wood Man's stage, I killed the first wolf with Heat, then set up a zip from the leftmost ceiling hanging in that room. I wasn't sure if I got the zip or not, so I was aimlessly running around, totally invisible above the ceiling. I ended up grabbing some ladder or other, and after a couple screen wraps with a false screen of the first wolf room, I ended up transitioning to at least the second bamboo screen. Could this be a possible new zip? One that could be a faster way to hit the death warp?

Update: I figured it out! I think it will be a viable zip that actually gets you to the "screen" where you exit a zip and switch to Quick before falling then the two jumps leading to the pause buffer switching to Heat. But the nice thing is it skips the entire dog/Wolf hall and can get you to the death warp maybe 15 seconds faster!

This is amazing! As a complete beginner to speedrunning, this is exactly what I need. Everything is explained incredibly well, the inputs in the corner are really useful, and overall it's perfect for understanding the fundamentals of MM2.

Really nice. I especially appreciate the use of going frame by frame, something that has been bothering me in the commentaries of recent Portal and Half-Life series speedruns that don't use it.

Every zip completed including latter zips , thank you for making this game even more fun. Now to put it all in one complete run , thanks.

Yesss!!! Got my wiggles down and zipped into bomb wall boss but was having a hard time getting out to fight the boss but I just hit left right (with a A button somewhere in there maybe lol)as fast as I could, cause I kept zipping back around and had to retry , but I finally made it in the room!!! But usually I have to use at least a E tank or 2 but can beat it with out though not often, and I play on a o.g. n.e.s. so no save state's for this guy, so anyways I made it in the room no e tanks and 0 lives and finished the game, not working any of the zips in a Speedrun , not ready yet, but I was so stoked to have pulled, a few zips and tricks from your tutorial that when I got to the boss gauntlet I said screw it all or nothing, I was pumped, oh and I play it on difficult so there's that but yeah so stoked thank you, that last wiggle to into the boss room then beating the rest of the game on empty, I usually will take a death , I mean I had been doing the whole time through the playthrough, but at that moment no way, and lastly congratulations on all your success, blessings to you and yours Mr. Duckfist🙏✌️

It's absolutely amazing how much you have broken each and every frame of this game down and figured out how to optimize everything. Well done. That you can then explain everything in great detail and in a way that's easily understood is an even greater achievement. Awesome.

Thank you for this amazing tutorial. Im getting started at mm2 and this is helping a lot

During the tiger parts of the Wood Man stage, I find it works best to start with the Flash Man strat where you freeze before the first tiger, and if you foul it up, switch to quick man at the end to take out the last one. That way, you're not forced to choosing one strat or the other. Or, you can just grow a pair do the tiger zip. :)

This is a fantastic tutorial video. Thank you for making this! I love the Mega Man series, and I an always interested in more ways to play and enjoy my favorite games. Thank you, and I hope that you had a very happy holiday!

And I finally was able to keep the lights on in the first quik man zip , was trying in the dark and almost made it but it's still tricky for me, then first try second zip, I went to fast and before I had time to slow down for the door to not soft lock I hit right, right at the door and made it!!!! Lol think that was a fluke but it be great if I could just do it that way 😆, ✌️

So I'm not really ready to do the zips in Wily 4, and I can't figure out how to do the boss fight room without already being in the ceiling. Any good zipless strat for that room? It's really tough. Thanks for doing this by the way. Your explanations are SUPER helpful! :]

At around 53:00, you talk about cancelling knockback via pausing. But you can't pause until the knockback animation is completely over in this game. Were you thinking of Mega Man 1?

Why don't you do the zip + wiggling to the bossdoor in Wily 3?

It's probably because either the time it takes to set it up isn't worth it; or zipping into it will cause you to die or something (most likely the former).

i think maybe good wiggling will save 1-2 seconds, if not you will lose a ton of time

This is a beginner's tutorial, so I'd rather leave stuff like this out. This strat is an option at the top level; generally, you won't have enough item 1 to squeeze this in, but it's possible to get a drop from one of the first enemies in Wily 2, which you can use for this spot. Also, this does add in another weapon-switch, sacrificing a bit more time.

At 2:43:00 couldn’t you use a #2 on the way down just before you hit the water then jump back to it to go through the water section faster?

This past weekend 12/2/17 - at the CT Tecmo Super Bowl tournament (CT Tecmo 9) - we did for the first time a MM2 “Race” - everyone started at same time on a bunch of TVs and raced to the finish! I have the Tecmo super bowl tourney every first Saturday of December & will defin be Doing the Mega Man 2 race again next year! CT Tecmo on Facebook (this tutorial helped a lot w practicing last 4 months for the race!)

This is a feature provided by most emulators called "Frame Advance". I use two emulators in this video - FCEUX and BizHawk, both of which can do this.

I was looking into the Mecha Dragon skip in Wily 1, where you lag the game out and scroll to the next screen and win. I thought delay scrolling was TAS-only, but I saw people doing it on the Legacy Collection leaderboards! I copied their setup, and actually managed to get the screen to scroll...but I died immediately. Is there a known consistent setup for this trick, or did these leaderboard people probably have to grind it out for hours and hours until they got lucky?

Good question. I don't think I've seen this done in RTA. I would guess that in Legacy Collection, you are playing one of the "challenge" modes, and defeating the Mecha Dragon may have a different win condition in that mode that is satisfied when delay scroll occurs - I'm not sure though. But in general, there is no delay scroll in the game that is RTA viable yet.

Yeah, I was doing a challenge mode, where the delay scroll counts as a win. In real life you have to turn to the left and shoot the dragon's glitched up body. I've actually been working on getting the strat in real time...and I think you might be right. You need to hit the bottom of the screen on the perfect frame (based on the sound the dragon makes), in order to earn the privilege of taking a ~5% bet that the screen will scroll at all. And even then, half the time it scrolls in the wrong direction, which is actually worse than just dying. Also, it wastes 3 Item 1's just to hedge that bet from 1% up to 5%.
