Mega Ghost Towns, Breweries & Wineries, Oh My! Fairplay, Colorado | Newstates in the States

Fairplay is not the most famous or the highest mountain town in Colorado, but this episode we show why it may be the most underrated! With an enormous Ghost Town, delicious food and drink, Fairplay is a great stopover when traveling through Breckenridge or heading to Leadville. Plus great FREE lakeside camping!
This episode picks up as we leave Leadville, CO (a must stop for possibly the world's greatest pizza, outlaw history and great hiking!) and head about an hour and a half over the mountain range to the tiny town of Fairplay, Colorado.
Continuing our streak of free camping and not paying for a campsite since early July, we boondocked about 30 minutes outside of town at Antero Reservoir, a free campground operated by Denver Water. There are no hookups so make sure you come prepared with water. There are pit toilets and picnic tables throughout.
We visited as many local spots as we could, stopping at South Park Brewery and then checking out several highly recommended places like Continental Divide Winery. Located in the an unassuming strip mall, the wine is excellent and they offer tastings of wines made with both Colorado and California grapes. It was here that we met Sarah, the wonderful tasting room host who also operates a non-profit called Smart Bellies. During our tasting, we learned about this organization and the great work Sarah (along with the help of dozens of volunteers) is doing to help feed local children.
We knew as soon as we heard about Smart Bellies, that this was the perfect first recipient of the monthly donation program we include as part of the Newstate Navigators, our Patreon community. Each month, we not only donate a portion of all memberships, but match them dollar for dollar from our own pocket to help support the communities we explore. With this month's donation, our Newstate Navigator community will help feed 10 children. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts, your support means so much! For more information on Smart Bellies or all the benefits of joining the Newstate Navigators, check out the links below.
After tasting wine, we headed off to get our history fix at South Park City Museum. This is a Ghost Town lover's dream come true, with over 40 buildings collected from a 900 mile radius, the museum gives you an accurate depiction of what a boom town during the gold rush days would have looked like. At only $9 (there is a coupon on their website) it's a steal! You can walk into the buildings, which are decorated in original artifacts, and it's like stepping back in time. There are seven buildings that still sit on their original foundations here. The rest were relocated from various ghost towns.

Fairplay/Alma gets a double thumbs up. I stayed in Gunsmoke! Well the mom and pop motel looked like miss kitties room complete with wrought iron squeaking beds and pitchers of water to wash your face. The lobby had a player piano and a marble bar. The cost was $6.50/night with tax in 1983. The food was home made and folks friendly.

Hi there! A relatively new subscriber. I came to your channel looking at your Navion review as we were considering one. I think now we are tending back towards a 20-22ft couples travel trailer like a geo pro or r-pod. But, as we are still researching, I wanted to ask you about your Navion and backcountry access. Firstly........What a great video! Thank you for taking the time to highlight the Fairplay area. We were pretty close to buying some land in Alma back in the very early 90s. But, it had a mega powerline going across it. Plus, we were able to find 40 acres for the price of this 5 acre plot down in the Sangre de Christo range; and it was covered in aspen trees! We've since sold that and are over in Ouray now and loving it. I will plan to go spend some time in Fairplay and Alma this coming year. We live in Ouray CO and are looking to get an interim rv to use for 3-5 years, until we retire, to do 1-2 week trips. Due to the vast distances here, I believe most of those trips will be focused in CO and the surrounding states. After we retire, we'll expand that to 1-2 month trips and probably get a different rig (though, I suspect that the Navion may be able to accomplish most of our current needs, and then definitely for the longer 1-2 month trips in the out years). So, since you have traveled around CO now. I wanted to get your opinion on if you feel that your Navion really limited your access in the back country. We are currently tending towards these small 20ft trailers; which I'm sure would offer more access than the Navion. But, I have a feeling that the Navion would be able to access 2/3rds or greater the places that one would boondock. I guess a comparison is if you find a location on campendium and are you able to get there at least 2/3rds or 3/4 the time?? Thank you for your time, in advanced! Safe travels too!!!

Hi Alan (I'm guessing it's Alan from the campingalan name, right?)! So glad to hear you're along for the journey and have been enjoying our adventures across Colorado. We loved our time there (including Ouray, what a great place to live!), and it's a great question. The Navion/Views are built on the Mercedes Sprinter chassis, and while not a 4x4, we had no trouble getting really "out there." That certainly can't be said for all class Cs, and we have helped that further by upgrading the rear shocks and sway bar. Definite improvement, particularly when exploring/camping offroad. Couple of videos for you to check out: Our RV Tour (if you haven't already seen it, dives deep into how and why we chose the Navion) kzread.info/dash/bejne/dJeBzpZsn7bRZJM.html Upgrading our suspension (very achievable as a self install) kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3Wbz9qGorvQg7Q.html 100 Days of FREE Camping (shows more of the kinds of places we have stayed in our Navion) kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6CWyc6YqqiWYag.html FREE Camping Colorado & Beyond (We loved our time in CO and here are many of the places we stayed, all free) kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGWosZWeeri9eKw.html Let us know if you have any other questions, and again thanks so much for subscribing to our channel! -Howard

@@NewstateNomads Good afternoon to you two!! Thank you very much for the prompt and thorough response! Yes...Alan is the name! I will check out the videos you've highlighted. That is great to hear about your access around CO. I suspect this rig would be able to access 2/3rds or more of any area we could dream up trying to get to here in CO. Honestly, our largest, and probably only, is the price of a rig like this. However, I know this would be more of a purchase for the ages, i.e. for our 1-2 week trip lengths for the next 3-5 years, and for the 1-2 month trips after we retire. Plus, this is a set up our mother in law and her husband or my daughter and her friends could use it too. A small trailer and a truck or a 33ft Class C would be much more challenging for others to "borrow" it. I was just joking with my wife that these even make great "errand" vehicles as our limited shopping is up in Montrose and big trips are up to Grand Junction. We can take naps there and make lunch! Safe travels and please reach out of if you guys pass back through the Ouray area. We have a tremendous secondary driveway that is fabulous for moochdocking!
