That was a mechanically injected diesel. 12v to the fuel shutoff solenoid and that’s it. No ECU. I’ve pulled mechanical injection diesels out of barns after having sat for 15 years and they still run on the old diesel in the tank. Top gear’s test was entertaining, but hardly profound. And btw, that was a Hilux, which we don’t get. The Taco isn’t even close to the hilux in terms of capability.

Total 12 quarts of engine oil. Old oil plus new oil. I drove 400 miles and started to smell something burning and smoking. It was the transmission with no oil in it. Filled it up with transmission oil. Drove it 200,000 miles and still driving it today with no problems. Still original transmission and original engine. If I hadn't done it myself I wouldn't of believed it myself. I will never ever buy any other truck. I'm sold on Toyota for life.

I can see some buying it to display for advertising but really like that they are going to tear it apart and use knowledge gained to make improvements or justify engineering decisions. Then that one ate through 3 radiators several batteries, and half of the time wouldnt start. But my aunt worked for toyota so he always had the family discount. We had the 91 for 12 years, and then we bought a new yukon in 2004, and now its also 12 years old it has held up much better. Although, my one gripe is the incredibly shitty speakers GM put in tho vehicles if they didnt come with a bose setup. Theyre really bad. My isuzu trooper is 15 years old and that doesnt have any problems either. Older nissans are reliable, like bulletproof, hondas have their problems in the automatic transmission department but i dig their accords

Brake drums worn (all 23 pounds each) right through...the back diff cover burrowed a hole through the steel, just by the ring gear spinning that many miles. Funny enough, the frame work is from overloading... Any claim to high miles on an automatic is another sign of hoax. At 500k, you are warding off nuclear reactions. I would be still driving it today if I didn't get hit by a tractor trailer in 2011. That twisted the poor little suv right out of whack. I had to change a clutch at around 550,000 and I lost 5th gear (OD) while driving through the mountains in 2007. I'm a large man as well. 6'5" +300lbs. Engine had good compression right 'till the end. I now have a 2008 Highlander and coming up on 400,000 soon. I'm very happy with Toyota quality.

lightnin.K always back to basics i guess... Follow the maintenance schedule Replace the wear and tear abit before the actual time (to prevent it failing during use, which might damage other components) Dont overburden the vehicle (dont floor it, dont speed like a madman, dont overload) Keep it clean inside n out (to take care of the paint, so that the paint can protect the metal. To prevent dust and dirt ruining the wiring insulators) Drive easy when cold Try to avoid traffic jams (start and stop traffic is a guaranteed way to cut ur cars drivetrain lifespan by half). Troubleshoot asap any funny noises or weird driving sensations (jerkiness, unstable acceleration, rough noises from the engine or tires) Try to keep things stock and original/oem. Dont go cheap on parts.

I think it's awesome that they care enough to see this as an opportunity to examine their product’s strengths and weaknesses. Probably the best Toyota commercial I've ever seen, and it wasn't even meant to be that! We've all heard all the manufactures tell us how great their product is. How committed to quality and strength and dependability they are. I’ve never been impressed by any of these claims. I've always felt actions speak louder than words. This is proof that they are truly working on continually improving. And that’s Awesome!

You forgot to ask how much Toyota paid $$ for the truck? Toyotas hold there value very well. I'm assuming since TOYOTA is "buying it back" it should be worth near full Manufacturer suggested retail price ( MSRP ). Toyotas not scraping the truck there actually learning and working on it even after a million miles. I'm flabbergasted at the quality of this manufacturer.

I'm sure you had to buy the truck brand new and be the only owner. Nobody drives their truck this much unless its basically being used as a UPS vehicle like this one was. The 117 oil changes got me. Only changing the oil every 9000 miles and it made it to 1 million. Probably used synthetic oil but didn't say. If they used the same oil every time, the oil company should have jumped at the chance to promote their product too.

The courier company that I worked for had four econoline vans that all ran well with over 400k miles on them. Sure, it isn't a million yet, but all of them felt like they would last another 400k so long as service was done to them. I don't even like ford... I drive a Subaru. This is why Toyota and Honda are the most reliable vehicles you can buy. They may not always be pretty, but these companies put a lot of their budget into designing the components that make up the vehicles. I highly doubt any other company could achieve something like that without major failures.

Unfortunately you'll probably never see a vehicle with this many miles up here in the northeast. The salt relentlessly kills vehicles. My car has 138k miles and runs perfect but there's rust everywhere and it probably only has two or three years left before it's no good. Sucks. Still, kudos to Toyota they make great trucks
