Meet The Gaffer

Фильм және анимация

This is not an unboxing. Here I convince my quarantine buddy to sit in for a three-camera shoot in the dining room. We use the newish 300x, as well as two MC's, and a 300d II to light the scene. We walk through it, step by step.
More info for the LS (Light Storm) 300x can be found here:
aputure.com/
And definitely download the Sidus Link app if you own any of the newer units.
Here's the website where you can order Annie's ProMatte mattifying gel.
Yes, it's a very simple site, but that means no overhead for fancy marketing.
You get a good product at a very fair price.

I haven’t tested them against each other, but I’m told the output is less than the 300d II, but that’s understandable. Exactly. When you are doing everything yourself it’s nice to be able to have remote control of as many things as possible, but without too much added set up time... we want everything these days, right!? And I always thought lights with apps were somehow not really big boy lights because then you would have most of your units on DMX and a few on a separate app, but Aputure’s system allows you to go either way and the app is so crazy easy that there isn’t a new learning curve necessary. I’m glad it helps you put out regular content because we are all better for it!

Right now I have 300D2, 6 MC's and a Ls20....unfortunately the LS20 while awesome little light does not have the mesh chip. Luckily they just annouced it's succesor the 60d which does and it will have a mini-spotlight attachement also ..... such a great combo I'm definately picking up one of those too.... for small shoots like mine the whole system is really a time saver and not to mention there is no need for generators....really impressed with Aputure in general.

Super helpful/useful to see this setup and your discussion of how you built it up and the strengths/weaknesses! My knee-jerk reaction would be to try a reflector of some sort off main camera right to fill the dark side of your face. Assuming this isn't the end of Act 1 and we don't mean to foreshadow (pun intended) that you go off the rails in Act 2, the dark side of your face is a bit darker than I would want. Would simply bouncing back some of what's coming off the ceiling be a good bet? What would be better if you had gone that next step to lifting the near side of your face?

  • @meetthegaffer

    @meetthegaffer

    4 жыл бұрын

The more I looked at it in the edit the more things I thought about changing😬I was fooled by the GH4 flip out, thinking it was set more like the GH5’s, so next time I would attach a monitor with waveform and false color. And the bounce is so high I could considered making the wide in terms of headroom to be able to fly something else up there like the 300x in a lantern. Lots of things... so maybe an ACT II would be good a idea. Would also be a good excuse to try out the ATEM mini pro that just showed up... but there will be a few other episodes before then.

Hard to say. Kinda depends how you will use it and if you like the idea of quickly tuning in a little warmth or coolness. If that’s not as important as having a small HMI like source in an easy form factor, then the tried and true is fine. If you are often fighting windows, you’ll want the greater firepower. If you have more units to choose from like me, I will almost always pick the tunable light, but it’s different if this is going to be your one “big” light. Decisions!

I always think of the production triangle of cost, time, and quality, where things could skew at any of the points. If this is the case, perhaps crew members have to prepare for productions either taking longer, reducing their rates, or working on skeleton crews. They make a very solid unit at a great price, but they go beyond that with elements you may take for granted from Aputure because they’ve been doing it for a while: the fit and finish, the case, the well made accessories, and now the clamp to attach the controller to the stand. They think through the customer experience better than most while keeping the price point lower than you would expect. I find that admirable and worth supporting, especially if you are starting out or working solo.

The higher amp batts are going to be better over the long hall, but in short bursts you can probably get away with 10Amp batts. I don’t have cheap recommendations. Andrew Lock at Gaffer&Gear may have some more cogent thoughts on the matter. I’m liking the trend toward 26V and 28V batts, but that doesn’t help you in this case because the range doesn’t allow for that. Call a few larger rental houses and ask them what they use. A rental house has to deal with a lot of different user habits and their batts probably go through a lot more cycles, so their choices over time are probably solid role models.

It does not have G/M. That adds complexity, time to market, and cost, so it’s an iterative step. You know they can do full color with MC’s, but doing it in a point source is no small task. ARRI is attempting it with the Orbiter and Fiilex appears to be going down that path as well. Big picture, it’s amazing how quickly the technology has progressed, but that just means we as users become greedier for more and more capabilities and lower price points:)

My understanding is that XY would be for a unit with full RGB, but to your point, I believe the truer color of such a unit will be at the opposite ends of the white curve: 3200 and 5600. You’ll get more output in the middle, but you may see a slight shift. Every manufacturer approaches the color science in relation to cost and time to market, so compromises are inevitable...
