Meet the Expert: The Ground Colours of Sèvres Porcelain
One of the features that distinguished eighteenth-century Vincennes and Sèvres porcelain from contemporary European production was the intensity and brilliance of the ground colours that artists at the manufactory applied over the white ceramic bodies. This explosion of colour happened during the 1750s, a moment for change at the Parisian manufactory, while new ground decorations appeared with the production of ‘true’ hard-paste porcelain two decades later.
