Meet The Airplane: Mooney Walkaround
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Ever wondered what kind of airplane I own and why? In this video, I give a little introduction to the machine behind the man and then take it for a quick spin around the pattern. I also explain why the paint looks like crap and why I don't have the latest and greatest avionics. I mean after all, this channel is called AVERAGE Aviator..... actually maybe it should be called below-average aviator......

Not many people know it, but the basic Mooney airframe first flew in the early, mid 1950's! The design was taken shape on Al Mooney's drawing board in 1952. An amazing long life, for a truly Classic airplane.
Hey Travis, Fellow M20C driver here. I just found your channel and really liked your rundown on why owning a Mooney is so great. My plane (Marj) has been a labor of love. I've added to her over the years as funds permit. While I doubt I'll ever make back the amount I've put in, it makes me happy to restore (and enjoy) an old plane. It's nice to see you doing the same.
Getting the inspiration to own a Mooney someday thanks to your honest and no frills video. Love the airplane, great job taking care of her.
It’s all about the flying and she flys like an angel, enjoy brother.
I love the Mooney your plan is beautiful I don't see anything wrong with it take your time with it and enjoy it be safe.. I would get one soon right now I'm restoring Cessna 150 J
That amazing. Im currently restoring a 1970 M20C and i can’t wait to fly it. Keep up the good work and post some more videos if you can.

I am currently working on a video now, but unfortunately it does not have any flying in it as I have not been able to fly for a bit. Hopefully I can get back in the air soon and get some cooler videos going. Thanks for the support!
Awesome video! I like the Mooney M20 but haven’t flown in one yet. Good luck with the project and stay safe!
Great video thanks for posting
Good luck with your restoration! I love the vintage Mooneys. Mine is a ‘64 M20C. Fly safe!
Just found your channel due to the fact you have an old Mooney. I hope you get to do more flying and post more videos about your flying, but also about the work you are doing to the Mooney. I would love to do this same thing, get an old Mooney as a flying project. Looking forward to seeing the progress, both with you and the Mooney :)
First GA plane I flew in was a Mooney with a friend and I loved it, sweet ride.
Thanks for sharing the video!
Enjoyed your video! Thanks
I am looking at a M20E that makes yours a cream puff of a ride. Hasn't flown for 20+ years. Would be curious what you got it for. Don't expect you to post but probably a good deal. Watching yours and other M20 videos has made me really want it even though it will probably take a couple years to get it back to good flying condition. I am a PA32 nut but going fast is more fun than hauling 6 people around...lol Thanks for the videos
Beautiful airplane man just take your time you shouldn't be in a rush just do it one time and do it right
Nice plane man, them moonies look great.
Nice, I was a low time pilot but loved to make touch goes and short approaches at Kansas City Downtown Airport and transition to the next door and now defunct Fairfax airport. Fun times at the KC Flying Service and RIP Jay Pouzar, and all the others in those times.
Awesome aircraft brother! The M20 is high on my list of potential future airplanes to purchase.
Ironic that the first mooney I looked at ended up in Pennsylvania. Took a short flight in that airplane before you must have bought it. Best of luck and stay safe my friend.
Nice video.
I love how much you love your plane!

I've been pitching old Mooneys to anyone who mentions they are in the market for an airplane and have the time to listen! Perhaps I am slightly bias, but they really do outshine the competition haha

Average Aviator I’m looking at an M20F, and you’re giving me more reason to think about pulling the trigger!
I've flown my Mooney M20C into 6P7 a couple of times! I am based out of KVVS. Just a short hop down the ridge.
I really enjoyed the video. Thanks so much from a fellow Mooney driver (M20F).

Good luck with selling the Sundowner then, I was really astonished at the overall performance and handling of the Mooney, you'll love it!
Nice plane, thanks for sharing. If I were you and I had an extra $10k sitting around, I'd spend it on fuel and instruction before I'd paint it. At least that's what I'm doing with my '67 F. ;-)
You might consider a vinyl wrap, the color and schemes are endless and a fraction of the price over paint. Thanks for sharing!
'75 F and love it!

Not a wood wing. First year of the metal wing. Produced B Models in ‘61 and half of ‘62. Manual (not hydraulic) flaps and gear.
How old are you and what do you do for a living? I love your videos! Greetings from austria!
I got my complex in a Mooney C and that was all I needed to start looking for one. Too bad this damn drama going on in the world right now has me held up but hey, my time will come!
It’s always beautiful in Western Pennsylvania.
Curious, what would I expect to pay for a Mooney in that condition?
good video! Did the gopro on takeoff sit there recording until you landed? Nice work

Thank you! I actually recorded it in two parts on the same day. I am the camera crew as well so the camera sat on the tripod for a couple takeoffs and landings and then I shut down, ran out, repositioned the camera, and did a couple more takeoffs and landings.
she's a beauty
Does this have the manually retractable gear?

Yes it does, I almost included an explanation on how the manual gear works, but it was too long and did not make the final cut.
Hi , what is the cruising speed and hp? The m20 C
@AverageAviator
3 жыл бұрын
180hp and I was seeing 135 KTAS at 11,500 ft at 7.5 gal/hr.
Nice Mooney. Would it be cheaper to wrap it instead of paint? Mark 21 or ranger? How’s the handling feel compared to Cessna?
@AverageAviator
4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure wraps are certified. The handling is hard to describe, all I know is I love it compared to the Cessna. It's much more responsive and light. I tried to fly a Cessna the other day, and while there were other factors involved, I could barely fly it. But then I hopped in the Mooney and I flew it beautifully, so it's just very different.

This will date me, but when I first flew a 172, it handled like a Ford Econoline van (you youngin's can Google the image). A Mooney is more like a Porsche Carrera.
In 40 years somebody will be flying a 100 y/o Mooney. 👀
Currently fly out of KCXY in Harrisburg, what airport is that? Seems like it should be on my $100 hb route.
@AverageAviator

It's Mcville, 6P7, the greatest part is landing 32 because the approach is over the river and the runway is on a sort of small cliff on that end, stop on over, fuel is cheap!
How much was it priced at, can you share some specs
@AverageAviator

Unfortunately I can't say exactly how much I picked it up for just in case I ever want to sell it again but if you have any specific specs you want to know if be happy to answer!

Hello fellow Mooney driver. N6710N

Nice to meet you, Ken!
I prefer high wings like cessna because I can get great views of the earth below, but I don't understand why mooneys and bonanzas fly so much faster than a cessna...I wish to have that sort of performance in a high wing aircraft.
@AverageAviator
3 жыл бұрын
The location of the wing in relation to the cabin does not necessarily denote efficiency. The reason my Mooney is faster and very efficient compared to a Cessna 172 is because it has a laminar flow wing, a narrow fuselage, retractable gear, and a constant speed prop. Bonanzas are fast as well but they are typically not as efficient in regards to fuel burn compared to Mooneys because they have a larger cabin. They get their speed from having a large engine, retractable gear, and a constant speed prop. Hope that helps!

@@AverageAviator so Cessnas are neither of those?
@AverageAviator
3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the model of Cessna you are talking about. The piston Cessnas are typically more draggy than your fast singles like the Mooney and the Bonanza because they have a larger cabin and they value stability, easier flying characteristics, and ease of maintenance over speed. 172s typically have fixed gear and things like wing struts that make them more draggy. However, you will find that the Cessna 177 Cardinal is actually comparable to Mooney/Bonanza speed even though it is a high wing because it has a more streamlined cabin, no struts, and they can be either retractable or fixed gear. Also, a high wing Cessna 172 and the low wing equivalent Piper Warrior have similar speed and fuel burn (if they have the same size engine) because they are both designed for similar purposes. Its all about the design of the airplane and what characteristics its built for.
Looks like finleyville airport.
Where are you based out of?
