Meet Michael

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is a brief introduction to the late silverback gorilla, Michael, who grew up with Koko, learned sign language with Koko, painted with Koko, loved Koko as a sister, and passed away in 2000 at the young age of 27. MIchael's life continues to be an inspiration to us all, and we've even named a sanctuary after him: The Michael Sanctuary in Cameroon Africa (Mefou National Park) for bushmeat-orphaned gorillas. Note that Michael himself was a bushmeat orphan, which may explain his intense emotional and intellectual personality. Koko was a bit intimidated by him, which is why may be why she subsequently selected the somewhat more mellow Ndume to be her mate. However, Koko will always miss Michael, as will we.
Lesson: Koko has become a very special gorilla, an ambassador for her species. However, her late companion Michael was quite a guy too.

    Baby gorillas are so dependent on their mothers. I can't imagine him witnessing his mom being slaughtered by stupid human bushmeat hunters. Makes me angry.

  • @soilmanted

    @soilmanted

    7 жыл бұрын

    +SWLinPHX Most likely Michael's mother was not slaughtered by bush meat hunters. Most likely she was slaughtered by people seeking to acquire baby gorillas to sell to people, including zookeepers (at zoological gardens), and to People like Penny (university sponsored researchers). The main motivation to kill gorillas is to sell their babies, not to sell their meat, which brings in much less money. Every gorilla in captivity is the result of such a slaughter and kidnapping, either directly, or indirectly as the progeny of captured gorillas. Live baby gorillas are salable for way more than bush meat. Killing their mothers is the typical way the babies are captured - the simple and most obvious way and the way it is almost always the way it is done. Mother walks thru the forest firmly holding and carrying baby which instinctively clutches mother firmly. The obvious way to get the baby is to shoot or otherwise kill he mother so that she is unable to hold the baby, and grab the baby who is not nearly as strong as the mother and whose grip is much easier to overcome. The capture and sale of adult gorillas is nil. Transporting them is much more expensive. They are difficult to capture - they will fight fiercely - but easy to shoot. The babies can then simply be detached, picked up, and put in a cage. They can't fight people like adult gorillas can. They don't instinctively fight humans fiercely the way baby feral cats will fight humans if you try to pick them up. Whether adult gorillas can remember the experience of being captured as babies is a good question. A 1-year old human probably would not remember the experience of being captured this way, or at least, not be able to verbalizie it, but a 2-year human old might. However humans, because of their big heads, are born at relatively immature state, compared to other primates. The adult human's ability to attend to almost every need of a child who can't walk until it is 2 years old, and whose binocular vision takes a while to develop, is what makes it possible for such an immature baby - kind of like a fetus - to survive. Humans do not walk until out of the uterus for 2 years; gorilla babies walk at 9 months. However they also nurse and cling to their moms until about 2.5 years old. So maybe it can remember and verbalize stuff from an earlier age than humans, including the age it was captured at. It still seems unlikely, because the earliest memories that people can communicate, coincides with the time at which they begin to learn language. Since the gorilla would not yet have learned sigh language at the time it was captured, it seems unlikely that it would be able to communicate what it remembers from then, in sign language. Personally, I can only remember vague feelings from the time before I could speak. For example what I can remember about having my prepuce amputated at 8 days old, is lots of people standing around, all around me, and laughing and talking, simultaneously with a feeling of fear and horror and of being betrayed by humans who I had erroneously assumed were my caretakers. I can't remember the actual experience of having my prepuce cut away. But all through my childhood I had a vague understanding that I couldn't truly trust my parents to do what was in my best interests. But Has someone looked for the answer as to what gorillas can remember?

    Theodore Zuckerman Developmentally other apes acquire situational awareness much soon than humans do. It has been described by Dr. Winthrop Kellogg and his wife who raised a baby chimp and their own infant side-by-side determined that the chimp, Gua, excelled at tasks and retained knowledge far quicker than the child until a certain point where the chimp hit a “cognitive wall”.

    There should be a change in international law to give these creatures an elevation in social standing. I'm not saying give them EVERY Right humans have, as they simply would not understand it, but any crimes taken against these creatures should be acted upon as if committing them against another human... No creature capable of expressing emotion and horrific recalls of their past can be considered animal. There needs to be a middle ground. Human or Animal simply cannot cut it anymore. These gentle giants have amazing intelligence... It makes me so sad they are slaughtered for their meat... They are self-aware, complex creatures and need our help, cannibalism is not tolerated. This shouldn't be either. Every other sign koko gives... is "love".. She is signing love... This is a creature with as much love to give as the kindest human...

    No creo en el destino, pero si existiera, creo que Koko tenía la misión de hacernos entender "todos los signos de humanidad que habitan en otras especies" y derribar los muros que nos impiden comprenderlos y ser sensibles a sus necesidades. Los amigos de Koko son inteligentes y amables, pero no veo en ellos esa ternura, esa calidez que hacía de Koko casi un ser humano (y de los mejores).

    All animals have family relationships they have memory they feel grief they feel fear and pain and joy and happiness we are not the only living creatures that have feelings memories and longing to be among our own family members or community a sense of belonging we all require food shelter and love....nurturing without it we are sure to lose the will to live.

    I mean in the sense that the poachers without weapons, or any unarmed grown man, stand no chance against Michael being as advanced and fit as he was. I strongly believe that if Michael were to have met the poachers, he would wreck them in the most beneficial and respectable act of violence.

    It depends with whom he's captive. Apparently, these people taught him and Koko asl and english, and they love Koko and loved Michael very much.

    They treat them like family though. You can't really call what there doing "captivity". They raised them as if they were their own. This is also how we can teach them about us and they, like this video shows, can teach us about them. This is helping the Gorillas become closer to humans giving them more rights.
