I believe whenever Koko signs the word "polite" she is using it as one would use the word 'please'. She always says polite then says something she wants.

cupcakedolphin In some languages those two words are used in a sentence, when you want something from somebody. For example in polish "proszę grzecznie o to" = "I ask you politly about it"

Yeah I noticed that too. She improvises with the vocabulary she knows.

She's so smart. I still remember reading in the book by that lady who takes care of her, about how Koko made her quit smoking... She told Koko that cigarettes and tobacco were bad and poison, so Koko found her pipe and broke it, and flushed her cigarettes... then when she asked her about it Koko said she didn't want her to die.

@@Nikita.1999 Yeah, she wrote about it in her book about her life with Koko. Penny was trying to protect Koko from getting poisoned by eating the tobacco, because she was very good at smelling it and finding it and would start trying to play with it, so she told her it was bad and would make her very sick and die (which from what I gathered she understood more of like a small child would, like 'to go away'). But Koko was smart enough to realize that if it really was that bad, then Penny shouldn't have it either, so she destroyed her cigarettes and pipe and told her that she didn't want her to die either.

I think she is indicating that she is "asking politely" for what she wants. Every child is taught to do so, to say please and thank you. Koko is being "good" by being "polite". 🤓

They've seen that ability in a few more animals since then. Most apes, also elephants, dolphins, some birds, I believe octopi (though not sure on that one, but they also have a lot of other qualities of intelligence like tool use and abstract problem solving). Most recently, ANTS. (that one blew my mind a little, but for sure they do pass the mirror test, they recognize themselves in a mirror with see a spot of paint on them and try to clean the spot off when they see it in the mirror)

Such an amazing creature

I know what I want to say, but I can't think of what it is right now. This is a spectacular and beautiful creature as close to ourselves as we will ever find. Yet we are killing them all over without remorse. I can't even explain how that makes me feel. I'm just horrified that any person could not be amazed by this creature and feel for her how she clearly does for others. I'm a mess right now. Please, someone, how do I human? I feel like we forgot a long time ago.

I admire Koko's patience. I think Penny was not as invested in the conversation as she was. I think she said, "Come; listen to me. "Thirsty" is how you ask for this... What? No... What is wet like? It's like the back of your mouth when you eat a candy... You don't understand? Forget that one then. Um... ummmm... Say you eat something, then you'll want to wash it down with *that*" It devolved from that point. She seems like a dedicated student. And then her awareness is reduced to her reflection.

Jauvid Moradi I love all that Penny has done and it's ridiculously impressive but I think she's lost perspective over the years a little bit. She's probably just been absorbed in it too many years to see how she interacts. She could really move kokos development and skills to another level, and you can tell koko is being limited. She's absolutely lovely but fallen into being that mollycuddling mother type figure, finishing sentences, and speaking without really listening and engaging with koko. You can totally understand why.

It's just conditioning, this is why it signs it's hungry and thirsty so often, those signs get it rewards. You can achieve the same essential effect by teaching a dog to "sit pretty" or shake.

Many animals have higher awareness levels. Most do, we just don't relate to them in ways that would help us understand often. Even plants are conscious beings, and are fully capable of conversation through chemical signals.

@BizarreCocktail Studies of language development in primates have had yielded groundbreaking results for how we understand language development. Implications from these studies are invaluable. Koko isn't being tortured or imprisoned; she's learning a way to communicate what she's thinking to humans. If she didn't want to learn, then why would she? Its not like they shock her if she doesn't sign something right. This research can help kids who are deaf or have language learning disorders
