In this excerpt from "Our Man in Tehran," Thomas Erdbrink of The New York Times sits down with Andy - whose millions of fans inside Iran can only dream that the mullahs will ever let him perform inside his own country.
“It’s sad, because we should be there,” Andy tells Erdbrink. “We should be touring every city, every village. I grew up in that country and I love that country. And I always thought that’s possible, although it’s been 38 years already, maybe more. But I keep thinking that’s possible and it will happen.”

In this revealing series on life inside Iran, Thomas Erdbrink shares a rare journey into a private Iran often at odds with its conservative clerics and leaders. The series offers surprising encounters inside the closed society of Iran, as Erdbrink gets Iranians to reveal the intricacies of their private worlds and the challenges of living under theocratic leaders.

One the most ridiculous thing we persians have in our community is giving stupid titles to eachother, this guy Andy is an Armenian-Iranian who has made millions of dollars thanks to the very rich Iranian in-exile community but he doesn't speak a word about what's happening in Iran when he's voice is heard, I agree that artists should talk politics but not when your country is ruled by ruthless brutal dictators, He has to be talking politics wherever his given a mic. He's an Iranian only when he takes our money his concert's tickets are way more expensive that those of top american singers but he doesn't care about Iranians at all, He's mistaken If he thinks he'll be received in Iran when he come back to Iran we'll show a huge middle finger to this guy and many other artists like him whose only job is to have cheap concerts in countries surrounding Iran.

Alright, and then what? Andy's music won't bring people together anymore and he'll be out of the spotlight without the platform that he once had to influence people. Do you not realize that the Iranian community is as tight knit as crumbly bread? His job as an entertainer is to entertain, not speak politics. Look where that's gotten this country when celebrities started talking about politics, it's divided people more, not bring them together.

What's the problem to organize in such big country the revolution? You're not under danger of Russian-Turkish occupation as we, Armenians. Besides that, you have mlns of youth in your country, and it's big shame on you that you tolerate these senils for 40 years. I hope that with the victory of Ukraine the Kremlin, Ankara and Tehran rejimes will fall down

Are you dumb? Persia was always called Iran internally, and Persia was the official Western name until 1935. Get an education. The dominant ethnicity in Iran is PERSIAN.

@@phatkaveh60 Imagine calling someone a moron when your English is worse than a third grader's and your punctuation is shit. Iran was never Persia, it was always Iran, the Greeks were the ones that called us Persians, and because they called us that, everyone else went along with it. This actually wouldn't be the first time in history that a group of people has been called the wrong name, for instance the Aztecs didn't call themselves Aztecs, they called themselves Mexica. Go back to school you dumb fuck.

@@ciaronsmith4995 Nope, it's gonna, will be, should be, and always be Iranian. People use the term "Persia" to pander to white people because of course "Iran" is associated with Islam and terrorism. Terrible innuendo, and just goes to show how bad we are, I refuse to say Persia and pander, I may as well just get a nose job and wear blue contact lenses while I'm at it if I'm just gonna say Persia.

@ Saifullah Awan That comment proves you haven’t heard any other songs than your own or you have a brain as little as a fly. I heard hundreds of songs as beautiful as Iranian songs even though I love ours and don’t understand most of them . But I enjoy them all equally. I never heard Pakistani song . Andy’s song cheer me up and make me dance but his voice is not the best . However, the was time that we had absence of singers and song and he shun massively. Good for him.
