Meet Aisha, the woman behind Ramadan Lights UK
In 2021, Aisha Desai launched a small initiative to cheer up the local Muslim community in London. After two years, her project, Ramadan Lights UK, is now illuminating one of the city’s most iconic streets.

Only 6% of the UK identify as Muslim, so these lights and Ramadan have no meaning to 94% of the UK population. This being the case they should never have been put up. Given Ramadan doesn't fall at the same time every year, in 7 years time it will coincide with traditional British Christmas festivities. So will these lights occupy part of central London in 2030 instead of traditional Christmas lights? Are 6% of the population going to be catered for rather than the vast majority who will want to see Christmas celebrated with Christmas lights? I believe the majority of British Muslims will be sensitive to the fact they live in Britain with it's own cultural traditions. Unfortunately those who seek to impose their own cultural traditions on Britain are not showing the necessary respect to the country (and it's people) in which they have voluntarily made their home.

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. Narrated Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. Sahih Bukhari Volume 5, Book 58, Hadith 234

Im sorry is this how the sahabah welcomes Ramadan. This is not what ramadan is about. It is about reading Qur'an when the month begins, immersing yourself in prayer. There are so many other ways to put young Muslim on the map and show positive representation. By lighting the city up i don't think is the right way to welcome ramadan.
As nice as this is, I feel like everyone is so obsessed with feeling ‘included’. Like who cares? We don’t need to be acknowledge by non-Muslims to feel special. We need to be acknowledged by Allah.

You are correct, however if you acknowledge that there are potentially very young Muslims who are learning the basics of their religion and with the mediums these kids are exposed to in the modern age, you often see a lot of haram. To counteract that, to add something visual to their life at a young age would be beneficial to get them onto the path of the deen. I know as Muslims we are the 2nd largest majority globally, however in the UK we need our youth to feel included. For those who are old enough to understand the importance of Islam, I agree it does not add significant value to their life as they know the value of Ramadan.
