How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe | Diana Darke

CC: 🇺🇸 🇪🇸 🇳🇱 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇹🇷 عربي
In this video, Diana Darke, author of the award-winning book, Stealing from the Saracens: How Islamic Architecture Shaped Europe, takes you on a quick architectural journey to see how architectural styles and ideas passed from vibrant Middle Eastern centers, such as Damascus, Baghdad, and Cairo, and entered Europe via gateways including Muslim Spain, Sicily, and Venice through the movement of pilgrims, bishops, merchants, and medieval Crusaders. It’s a rich tale of cultural exchange that will help you see some of Europe’s - and even America’s - iconic landmarks with new eyes.
Diana Darke is a Middle East cultural expert with special focus on Syria. With degrees in Arabic from Oxford University and in Islamic Art & Architecture from SOAS, London, she has spent over 30 years specializing in the region, working for both government and commercial sectors.
She is frequently invited to speak at international events and media networks, such as the BBC, PBS, TRT, Al-Jazeera, and France24. Her work on Syria has been published by the BBC website, The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. She is a Non-Resident Scholar at Washington’s think-tank MEI (the Middle East Institute).
Diana is also the author of the highly acclaimed My House in Damascus: An Inside View of the Syrian Crisis (2016), The Merchant of Syria (2018), and The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo (2019).
Special thanks to the Foundation for Intelligent Giving and the Barrington Peace Forum for their support.

This simply shows that all cultures have given a sound contribution to all mankind, Islamic architecture helped compliment European architecture. If we can get beyond the me me attitude and heed what this scholar said NOBODY owns a monopoly on creative ideas, they are all intertwined together to create a beautiful mosaic of art work for all the world to see. Saracens is a Crusader reference for Levantine Muslims, and is literally derived from the phrase "Sara('s) sons"/Sara sens = "Saracens", i.e. "the sons of Sara". Sara was the mother of Ishaq ("Isaac"). "Isaac" was the second son of the Prophet Abraham. The Israelites trace their lineage to "Isaac". After the defeat of Byzantium by the Muslims, vast numbers of Christian Israelites (and Jewish Israelites) accepted Islam. The Palestinians and other Levantine people were thus referred to as "Saracens" by the medieval Crusaders.

@Galatians 5:1 We have freedom now If it's not hidden, then why teach students about "gothic" and "roman" architecture without the inspiration behind those? Why lie that Goths invented the Gothic architecture?? The Romans called Muslims Saracens, meaning thieves. What's the agenda behind that??

@@RS-le7yd You missed the whole point of the video. The Muslims were inspired by the Romans and it came full circle. The Gothic style is still a european style, as it is not 100% the same as Islamic structures from which it took inspiration from. This video point out how the Muslims took from various different already settled styles and made their own, one of which was Bizantine structrures. Same thing happens with the european Gothic style.

No you totally miss the point. She just gave you an entire list of elements which are Islamic innovations - pointed arch, multifoil arch, double dome, intersecting overlapping arches, stained glass, rose windows. None of those existed prior to patronage of Islamic caliphs and she gave you the Islamic buildings where those innovations first appear in history. You might have a problem with audiovisual comprehension. It might be helpful to take notes when you are viewing videos so you don’t miss the obvious main points and facts conveyed in the video. Perhaps you should read her book since you are not a good visual or auditory learner, which suggests you might be more of a verbal learner.

@@fadiljelin7297 pointed arch is not islaimic innovation. The clearest surviving example of pre-islamic pointed archs are the two pointed archs of Chytroi-Constantia Aqueduct in Cyprus dating back to the 7th century CE.
