Meet a Metal Thrasher Turned Virtuoso Watchmaker

Dan Spitz, who played lead guitar for the metal band Anthrax, left the group in the '90s to pursue an unexpected path: master watchmaking. Now, he's one of the top watchmakers in the world, but can still shred a guitar like it's 1983.

    I still have one of Dan's guitar picks from the very first MTV Headbanger's Ball Tour. It was April 14th, 1989 in Dallas, with Exodus and Helloween, I was screaming my ass off on the front row and when he threw the pick it landed in my mouth - which is probably the only reason I got out without loosing it. This revelation brings a whole new appreciation for one of my favorite Anthrax tunes, Got The Time. Thanks for all the good times, Dan.

    The most complicated watch I'm aware of has some 2800 parts; the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260. Master watchmaker Mr. Spitz mentions that he sometimes work with watches with up to 4000 parts. If possible, a few examples (or just one example) of these watches would be fantastic to hear about. Thanks!

  • @borbetomagus

    @borbetomagus

    One can only wonder what personal time piece has more parts than the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 pocket watch (2826 parts, developed over eight years, released in 2015 and weighing 2.56 pounds (957 grams)). Considering the component part count of these time pieces: Vacheron Constantin - Celestia Astronomical - 514 parts F.P. Journe - Sonnerie Souveraine - 582 parts Patek Philippe - Sky Moon Tourbillon - 686 parts Breguet - Marie Antoinette - 823 parts Vacheron Constantine - Tour de l'Ile - 834 parts A. Lange & Sohne - Grand Complication - 867 parts Patek Philippe - Henry Graves Jr Supercomplication - 920 parts L.Leroy - Leroy01 (La Lucie) - 975 parts Patek Philippe - Star Caliber 2000 - 1118 parts Patek Philippe - Grandmaster Chime 5175R - 1366 parts Patek Philippe - Grandmaster Chime 6300G - 1366 parts Jaeger-LeCoultre - Hybris Mechanica à Grande Sonnerie - 1472 parts Franck Muller - Aeternitas Mega 4 - 1483 parts Patek Philippe - Calibre 89 - 1728 parts Vacheron Constantin - Reference 57260 - 2826 parts perhaps Dan Spitz is working on a commissioned time piece surpassing the part count of the Ref. 57260. At the beginning it appears he's servicing a Rolex 'Daytona' with the 4030 caliber (before Rolex used their in-house 4130 caliber that had several improvements). Later it looks like he's servicing a Parmigiani Fleurier 'Toric Chronograph' with the 400Z caliber. Both calibers are based on Zenith's El Primero caliber 400. I'm just wondering what he's doing at 1:54. Shouldn't the movement be dismantled instead of yanking at that (problematic?) component? If you ever get the chance to visit Copenhagen, Denmark try to search out Jens Olsen's World Clock, which has 15,448 parts. /watch?v=D_YEfJaDnjQ
