    I worry these young players are pushing themselves so hard physically that constant injuries in the top 20 are now a de facto part of the game. It's a bit scary that Carlos, Sinner & Meddy are all MIA recently with injuries. I feel like this is what happened to Andy Murray, to a certain extent. He had to work so hard to get to the top in such a competitive field that he sustained career-derailing injuries. There's nothing as astounding in tennis as watching Carlos when he's playing his A game, but I hope players begin to dial it back a bit, acquire the smart/percentages game a bit earlier, & think about the long haul. I want to see Meddy, Carlos & Sinner in the mix years from now, not have them sidelined into early retirement. Get well soon, Meddy.

    @tothelighthouse9843

    14 күн бұрын

    @@ricklee5845 I 100% agree with you, today is even more demanding. But what I'm saying is Andy's trajectory was the canary in the coalmine, an early sign of the path the game is on. Andy lingered in top 50 for a while, then made a decision to do whatever it took to get to the top. Insane training & gym work. It's what it took to beat the Big 3. And he got there...but at a price. I think he set himself up for career-ending injuries, unfortunately. "The new demands of the game". Andy was a sign of what was to come, & of where we are now: consistency in the top 10 is unsustainable now because the physical demands to get & stay there are off the charts & result in injuries. I hope I'm wrong, that the slew of recent injuries is a fluke.

  • @tothelighthouse9843

    @tothelighthouse9843

    14 күн бұрын

    @@user-im9hp2kv6k Agreed, & the current game is also more about power than strategy & tennis smarts. Djokovic is the master of game plan, strategy, & understanding the important moments in a match. He has no current peers in his ability to see & execute the percentage shot. He doesn't have to play lights out tennis because he knows what the 'just enough' shot is to win the point. This thinking/strategic approach to the game has helped him avoid injuries & conserve his body. Younger players may need to become early-adopters of that kind of strategic approach if they want any kind of longevity.

    Nice, 12 days masters 1000 are amazing. We get a tournament that seems to last forever, only to get 2 1/4 finals per day, and if just one player is injured that's just 1 match. Amazing. At the same time smaller tournaments are even more pressured or cease to exist so that tournaments like this can last 12 days instead of 8.

  • @SJ-di5zu

    I agree, I hate this format and it doesn’t seem to be helping the players recover either. It’s just a sad money grab. I knew I wouldn’t like it from the start, but I underestimated just how bad it’d be. This shit feels so slow, and the matches are often not climactic enough to make up for having to wait so long in between. Masters are normally a treat due to the fast-paced, constant action. Every day you have multiple good matchups to look forward to. With this format the tournament turns into a slog.

  • @jonas8993

    @jonas8993

    15 күн бұрын

    @@SJ-di5zu exactly ! Masters 1000 were unique in the fact that it was condensed. You had a smaller draw, almost always elite matches in a short span of time. And everbody plays the 1/4 finals the same day. Same time for recovery. To me it was the alternative for slams that are slightly more prestigious but pretty long. Pretty sure they're fighting a money war against the slams and want to make masters 1000 an equivalent but at the cost of players and fans. And one of the excuse behind it is grabbing more money yeah, though I'm not sure all that money is going into the right pocket. And honestly I don't understand why the priority should be to pay a bit more players that are already wealthy. While there's like a bunch of players that help the tour happen and can barely make end meets. But that's my anti capitalist side I guess.

  • @jonas8993

    @jonas8993

    14 күн бұрын

    @@fycfyc1 I don't see how this could be a valid argument. We should deteriorate the overall quality of those tournaments and all other consequences, just so that in case of bad weather the format is better suited?? Going into that direction might as well cut out half of the atp tour and double the length of each tourney. Weather and other issues that delay tournaments have never been a real problem in tennis. Just mere inconvenience that made each instance unique. Yes sometimes players have to play severall matches in a row. That's not ideal, that's rare and not the worst problem to have. Making tourney last longer, in combination with surfaces slower and making match longer ARE a real issue for players health. Not only that, get informed on what smaller tournaments have to say about the situation. Regions in the world that used to host tournaments to help their economy and develop. Soon there will be only like 60% of the diversity that the tour had back in the days, with a clear accent on rich cities. And that's not the worse imo, as fans we should be worried about the war between slams and the atp. This war isn't for our sake or for the players.

    Yeah but Lehecka is just a tough matchup for Rafa, and I think the fatigue was getting to him as well. Lehecka’s big hitting off both wings would’ve been annoying for Rafa to deal with even in like 2019/2020/2021 (2018 or earlier Rafa would’ve decimated him regardless). When Rafa’s confidence is low, he tends to play safe margins and that allows big hitters to move him around, and Rafa isn’t as fast as he used to be so he can’t really defend well enough. That being said, I’m sure a lot of guys are kicking themselves right now. If Sinner had stayed healthy, he would’ve had a great shot to win this. Same deal for Medvedev who matches up very well with the three remaining players in the draw. Tsitsipas, Ruud, Zverev are all probably feeling similar.
