Meditate Better | Swami Sarvapriyananda

"The mind is very restless, turbulent, strong and obstinate, O Krishna. It appears to me that it is more difficult to control than the wind" - Bhagavad Gita (6.34)
"Lord Krishna said: O mighty-armed son of Kunti, what you say is correct; the mind is indeed very difficult to restrain. But by practice and detachment, it can be controlled" - Bhagavad Gita (6.35)
Inspired by these verses, Swami Sarvapriyananda provides invaluable guidance on improving our meditation.

ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

I have been following Swami Sarvapriyananda for years starting with his first lectures at the Vedanta Society of Southern California, and his expositions just keep getting better and better. - and he started from a very high benchmark! In this talk he cuts through so much, with such incisive, insightful analysis, bringing it together with such focus, clarity and lucidity. And so simply. 🙏🏼✨🙏🏼 What a blessing our SwamiJi is. I feel privileged to just hear him. His teaching is illuminated.

Agree with what all that you say. I am a new follower just starting out to listen to him. What a wonderful experience it is to listen to his wisdom, incisive logic, practical examples and metaphors, references to classic Vedic sources, great scholarship, a ceaseless flow of words from within, such unassuming and humble personality, nicely interspersed humorous comments, ease of references to everyday examples from daily life that we can all relate to, respect for the intelligence of his audience...I could go on, but no words can really do justice to his sharp mind and pure brilliance. He is a blessing to all humanity, and we should consider ourselves so fortunate to have him accessible to us all remotely via KZread. God bless him with the best of health so he can continue to teach us, show us a path to follow and share his wisdom with all for decades to come...Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti...

Why is that someone like Budhha, Shankaracharya, Ramakrishna, Vivekananda become so famous in their time? I think that's because they taught what they experienced. When teaching comes from experience it has a different impact. Swami Sarvapriyananda teaching comes from his experience and that's why it's so real and intoxicated 🎉🎉🙏🙏.

Swamiji is a great asset to this world . Here is the summary 1. Meditate regularly 2. Have Fixed time 3. Have a Fixed Place 4. Avoid bad thoughts 5. Avoid bad company 6. Practice little bit of asceticism 7. Cultivate Vastness (infinity eternity) 8. Earning for the God 9. spiritualize daily activity 10. Seek holy company.

  • @navin346
    @navin3462 жыл бұрын

My understanding and summary: How to calm or control the unsettled mind ? 1. Through regular practice of meditation 🧘‍♂️ and concentration consistently, till it becomes a habit. Making it a habit is important, to train the mind. One analogy is Mahot controlling the elephant 🐘 despite its sheer size and strength. 2. Develop Vaiřagya - Dispassion(detachment from worldliness), through development of detachment becomes easier for mind to train and convince. 10 things 1. Meditate regularly 2. Have a fixed place 3. Have a fixed time 4. Avoid bad thoughts 5. Avoid bad company 6. Practice asceticism 7. Cultivate vastness , infinity and eternity(in thought process) 8. Yearning for god(not desire for world) 9. Spiritualise daily activities with little bit of Ritualism(Don't overdo) 10. Seek holy company. This framework can be used for pragmatists(like Arjuna) who wants to develop mindfulness and make the mind amenable. Namaste 🙏

God in His Awesome Immense Power generously gifted every man with that sense of “godliness” that whip up man’s ego and sense of importance. The sum total combined know-how and knowledge of man from time immemorial is not even a drop in the ocean in comparison to God’s. Man live under the illusion of being in control or being smart. Just bear in mind that God is in no need of man whatsoever. Nothing that man does will increase the Supremacy of God one bit. Man need to beg continually for His Mercy and Compassion.

I am a student of Tibetan Buddhism and other related practices. I believe the "Gods" of Bhagavad Gita and Puranas (including Krishna) may have been,, in actuality, intelligent ETs. I believe the same of the visionary beings in Islam, Hebraic History, and Christianity. This was to keep beings believing that they needed an intermediary. Buddhist and Non-Dual Yogis know better than that. We don't need an intermediary - except, possibly, to study the teaching and techniques of practice. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own Awakening. We are the watcher...witnessing all...silently. The talk you gave about Nagarjuna and then your example of the Golen necklace was wonderful. You seem to know your Buddhism very well. I appreciate your objectivity. Among In Indian Yogis I am aware of, I read Meher Baba and Paramahansa Yogananda,,,and I am a huge "fan" of Ramana Maharshi". and Nisargadatta Maharaj...At that level, whether you're given the label of Guru-ji or a Tibetan cave Yogi, it's all the same. They have transcended this mundane world. You have a wonderful, humble approach, and are needed at this transitional time. Thank God for Mother India! Very nice teaching Swamiji

First step, Vairagya should come to our life. Second, meditation with regularity....We have to find out which path suits us, Bhakti, Gyana or Karma,or all together. 🙏

Swamiji's life is service to humanity. And that service is about teaching to the world what is truly real and all the the rest of what you perceive and experience in this universe is just Maya. I would like to think this sort of dedication to do good to the world will lead him to the realisation of the Brahman in the not too distant future. Pranam Swamiji.

Brilliant discourse🙏.I don't think one needs to let go of materialism to be spirtual but one needs to be mentally detached. Keeping a balance of the material and spiritual world combined.

Very thorough exposition on meditation. I'm very impressed with the depth of wisdom and spirituality of the Ramakrishna Order, Swami S in particular. I like the emphasis on the timeless, ancient teachings, without being merely a cult of the sacred personalities--Ramakrishan/Holy Mother/Vivekananda.
