Vinh Ngo okay, I get that all games have limitations, but there's no way you can tell me you aren't seeing what he is getting at.. there is quite the gap between what you can do with the human body in real life and in that of games like call of duty or counter strike. All the games are severely limited human bodies because you have to be able to control it with a handful of buttons. If you could, say, shoot a grenade out of the air, adjust flashbang or drag throws perfectly, blind fire over objects without peeking your head out, etc. then maybe we could talk.. but there is no way to truly innovate the game because no amount of training could change the coding limitations. And although in real life we are limited by physics, in the game we are limited not only by physics engines, but also by any aspects of the game that were uncoded and technological limitations.

The fact you're calling that idiotic shows you're just as ignorant as the media is about esports. Now I'm not much of a fan watching esports or traditional sports but both should be respected just as much. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's idiotic. I'm a gamer and love playing games and getting a bit competetive about it and I dislike sports such as football and basket and whatnot simply because i find them boring in comparison. Yet I understand how people can enjoy it just as people can enjoy watching Leauge of Legends or Counter-Strike. They are both the same the only differance is one is virtual and the other not. Both can be entertaining if it's what you like and enjoy.

technically the programming limitations equivalent for the physical sports are the games rules.basketball has rules, football has rules, every sport has rules.E-sports only have a handful of written rules, like "you win at 15 points" or "you cant cheat",and the rest of the rules are kinda covered by the programming limitations.

It's actually an upside when you think about all the times in, for example football, where there have been lots of controversial tackles and offsides, in a video game in is literally impossible to accidentally or purposefully break the rules without getting past an anticheat.

George Snell That's not entirely true. Developers and programmers can make mistakes resulting in bugs. And players have exploited those bugs. There was also an incident at a League of Legends final where both teams decided to take the money for first and second place and split it evenly between them. They then just played ARAM(All random all mid) in the finals.

It's RULES what limits all games, including sports. There isn't a single goal, like scoring a goal on soccer, you have to do so with your feet, you limitations as to where you can pass the ball, it is in a confined area, etc.. it's these limitations that make the games exciting in the first place, it's a stupid argument from the media. JSmellerM If I remember correctly, those teams were punished and the money taken away from them and that hasn't happened since, the scene was still pretty new while most sports have been competing for dozens if not a hundred years. There were still some rumors of cheating in CS:GO pro scene, so IDK, but they are exceptions.

There is also flaws in the rules that account for the exact same things as bugs. First idea that pops into my head is this past football season where the Ravens head coach had their guys hold the other team on the punt until there was no time left to run out the clock. Totally unfair and doesn't make sense. Same things with bugs, and the best thing is that they can both be fixed relatively easily. Also you may just agree with the guy above so sorry if this sounds like a direct attack.

Look at the definition. It says that it has to require skill. Reading doesn't require skill. It even states that it requires people competing against each other. You can't compete against others in reading, can you? I understand where you are coming from. That sports should be physical like all traditional sports such as football. But games surely meets the definition of "sport".

  • @Mr35diamonds

Physical exertion, sure. For competitive gaming consumes so much dedication and allegiance that it has succumbed to such a degree of exertion, as a contingency is proclaimed, thereby if a "game" takes such a vast expanse of practice and pliancy, then why cant it be considered a sport, similarly.

here is my reaction to this "I am not a friend of eSports" That's fine "It's video games" I know "It shouldn't be on a sport network" I agree it shouldn't be on a regular sports network, but not that it shouldn't be treated like one "It's video games" I noticed "By a large degree there's limitations on what you can do based on the programming right" Yes. It's called rules. In basketball you can't run outside the field. That's a rule. Programming is rules that can't be broken (unless you hack) "It's still not a sport, it's a game" Football is a game. Basketball is a game. Clue is a game. Wait what was I talking about? "Do you have statistics on how many of those people also go to Star Trek conventions" You say that like an insult (I don't like Star Trek BTW... don't hurt me) "I can't think of anything less insteresting" That's fair. I find watching basketball pretty boring. (don't hurt me please) "KZread Gaming is the new KZread platform on which people who play video games can watch other people who play video games" And CBSSports is the platform on which people who play football can watch other people who play football "And of course I made fun of this because there are people watching other people play video game" There are people watching other people play football, basketball, golf, soccer, and more! "That can't be good for you, you're staring at a screen" Well while your not getting much phycial workout, staring at a screen is fine. Anyway you're sitting at your chair. You're getting less workout than someone gaming. You're still fit aren't you.

This is the exact reason why I was never allowed to have my desktop PC in my room, and why my main passion for the past 15 fucking years has been disregarded this whole time. My parents never cared that I made extremely important friendships just by playing games, and they just forced me to have the desktop in the noisiest, non-private room in the house where they could always see the screen just to know exactly what I was doing. The computer to them was just a tool for checking email every week, and letting their 'other' kid occupy themselves with it (as long as I was doing something perfectly safe and boring). It was so bad in the late 00s, that my mom didn't allow me to play Runescape just because of what one player said in chat, so I could only play when no one was home, or if I could switch to another tab if someone walked in. Only having a passion for gaming, and being limited on what I could do online/what I could play/who I could talk to, has had bad psychological effects over 15 years, while, whaddaya know, my friends who could do anything they wanted in the comfort of their room and could pursue their passions without being harassed by their parents, turned out better than me judging by how they are going to good universities and studying tech and that. Since I've finally gotten old enough to do what ever I want, trying to get to Global in CSGO, and trying to spend as much time as possible playing games is pretty much meaningless now since all my friends don't play anymore, and like I said, go to uni. My parents ruined and stomped on my gaming passion so hard, that I had to compensate for it by getting myself into classical music and history, but those fields also require years and years of knowledge and passion, so thanks a lot, parents. If I were to have kids, I would never stand in their way of something like this even if I didn't understand it. It's just so frustrating how their ignorance ruined something so god damn important to me. But that's life. /end rant.

As a semi-professional football player and Gamer, I can tell you that Esports is a sport. Esports is extremely hard and requires huge mental and physical focus, which is the same us football athletes require as well, it also requires a good IQ like football to succeed in it. Its just these older Generations and their backward minded views of the world, the worl is progressing forward while they fall behind.

  • @jairartis

The only difference I find between sorts and eSports is one requires a lot more game knowledge while another requires physicality. They both are fun to watch, have two teams playing against each other, take skill, require strategy, require teamwork, have dedicated teams, can be done casually and professionally, draw in consumers, are GAMES, and take practice to perfect. Just because a football player can strain themselves or an ESports player has to study changing limitations of the game doesn’t make them so different.

Okay, as someone who has participated in 'real' sports, esports, and mental games (I.E. chess on a semi-competitive level) esports are not sports.. I don't know why that makes everyone so angry... there's nothing wrong with that. I love watching esports in certain games as much or more than watching some of my favorite sports on tv. But you must recognize that esports are esports. They aren't 'sports' and that's okay! It doesn't devalue them in any way, it just distinguishes the skills involved. Sure, it's hard to train your reaction time and muscle memory to hit flicks and whatnot, but there is no way that you can legitimately compare that to being in peak physical condition to performing on the field. Therefore esports participants are not athletes, they're e-athletes. It also astounds me that there is such anger over this.. I've never seen a poker or chess player get angry that they're not called athletes, and yet everyone respects the skills they must use in their game.

Tommy Clark You are insanely incorrect. If you consider poker to be a sport, which it is recognized as such nationally, then esports is sports. You actually can compare esports to "sports" esports athletes often spend as much if not far more hours practicing and training. Yes it's less physically intensive, but strategy games like Dota and LoL require far more mental coordination and dexterity than football ever will. Esports events are now reaching the level of national sports attendance wise. Players travel across the world and practice for days and nights without stopping, they have to handle defeat and have massive determination because we all know that these top esports do NOT come easily as the skill gap is massive. A player who just starts playing a game that has been out for a long time will have to practice for years to even reach the level of skill of some of the top players on these games. Do some research before you post ignorant comments. p.s.- no one cares about chess
