Game Theory: Why ESPN is WRONG about eSports

Miss the last MOBA theory? ►► bit.ly/1HTfoRp
Last year, ESPN's John Skipper stated that esports are "not a sport" and that on ESPN he's interested in doing "real sports." Today we're on a crusade to prove that Esports and games like League of Legends, Smite, and DOTA can stand toe-to-toe with the NFL, NBA, and the rest of the traditional ESPN roster. Not only do these games require the same rigor and commitment as traditional sports, but the structure of Esports as a whole has even started to look and feel like traditional sports leagues, with everything from internationally-recognized athletes to team sponsorships to league tournaments. It's time for Esports to get the recognition they deserve!

BigBadWolf I also feel that they shouldn't be called athletes, because it kind of takes down the meaning of the word. However, think about it like this: If you play basketball all by yourself, you're not doing a sport, you're doing an excercise. If your playing basketball competitevely with other people, it's a sport. Hell, seeing who can drink their water bottle the fastest can be considered a sport. It's just that that isn't going to be considered a sport because it doesn't require much thinking or pshysical ability. E-sports do.

I will just say that, according to SportAccord, the association of all of the world's biggest sporting federations (like [association] football and rugby), the definition of a "sport" is any activity that a. has an element of competition; b. does not rely on any form of "luck" integrated within the game; c. is not judged to pose an undue health risk to its participants; d. is in no way harmful to any living creature; and e. does not rely on equipment provided by only one supplier. By this definition from the _de facto_ international representative of sport, certain eSports do in fact count as sport.

It's the only one doing anything different and like the video said, the only one moving the genre forward. Though i still think how you level up is just wrong. Its based on how many matches you play basically instead of how well you play. So you could be level 30 just from playing alot of matches, but still not be very good at the game. Personally I would go off of the win loss record or your kill to death ratio, but thats just me.

Sports requires four things 1) Physical Exertion - Any Movement counts, if its running a marathon, or moving a chess piece, it's physical exertion. What most people view this as is extreme Physical exertion, which is a requirement for athletics. This stops watching TV from being a sport 2)International Governing Body - Some sort of organisation, usually French. This stops games people create from being sports 3)Skill or learning curve - Any skill, or need to learn that will always affect the event. This stops gambling like slot machines from being sports, but allows Poker as a skillful Poker player will beat a unskillful one 4)Competition or scoring system - A goal to achieve victory and a way to calculate this.

As a gamer, I don't think gaming should be recognized as a sport. It's essentially saying that sitting on a chair rapidly pressing buttons falls under the same category as running through a field tossing/hitting balls to each other and (depending on the sport) making physical contact with other players. With sports you need speed, endurance, and reflexes. You also need to make use of your entire body. But with gaming, you just need reflexes and speed, but those only apply to your fingers, while you yourself could be physically out of shape and absolutely helpless in a real sport.

While slightly true, you also have to use your brain. What to buy, who to heal, how long you spend in a lane, and weather or not to press an attack. Split Second decisions. A lot of it is quick thinking. I can respect your opinion, but I feel that it can be considered a sport.

The meaning of "Sport" is to use physical exertion and skill in a individual or team competition for entertainment. Gaming doesn't seem very physical considering your sitting in a chair for the duration of the game but when MatPat showed me that players tear muscles in their arms in gaming competitions, I couldn't believe that. That one clue shows that gaming is a legit sport. A sport where you physically exert energy and show your skill through a computer! Think I'm lying? Look up the meaning sport.

I'm sticking my neck out here, but I think that two categories of sport should exist. Mental and physical. Sports (Or games) that are more demanding in terms of physical prowess are considered physical sport, whereas sports (Or games again) where strategy, quick thinking and other mental attributes are more vital should be classed as mental. Notice how I never said neither attribute is not needed in any sport (Even chess, but you don't need much physical power to move pieces around)

There already is. Athletic and Non-athletic What most people count as just "sports" are athletic Sports, but sports such as esports count as non-athletic sports The definition is Ever Physical Exertion(Non-Athletic) and Extreme Physical Exertion(Athletic) There is no true line between the two, but the normal definiton if the sportsman has an average of 110bpm while active in the sport The definition dosn't care how much physical exertion, along as you doing something with your body changes the event somehow counts. If it's Running a marathon or moving a chess-piece, both are physical exertion

Honestly, my biggest reasoning for why I sorta look down on esports in comparison to normal sports, (while being a big gamer.) Is that active sports do get people, active. They have peak physical health. Esports, that's not really a requirement. Both types of sports can get injuries from play, but the esports injuries are from their extensive 'training.' Carpal tunnel and arthritis like problems simply come from the extensive play they under take. While the only thing extensive training for sports does, is increase their physique, increase the resistance their muscles have, the rate oxygen is transported by the heart, all good things that not only benefit the sport, but the rest of their life too.

Eh.. I get that all sport people care about is the physical aspect but the only reason I can even speak English is cause of games not cause of my 2 years of football, "real sports" increase physical attributes but it depends on the sport tbh cause some of em (like golf) don't seem to me like I'll play them for 5 years and be buff af after, meanwhile most esports increase your awareness, decision making, thinking, communication etc... I just feel like barely anyone takes a look at this discussion from both sides, yes esports don't increase physical stuff, and yes sports don't increase mental stuff, unless you wanna talk chess and stuff but that's not a "real sport" either is it?

It is not us that want it that way, if ESPN doesnt take this chance to enter the E-Sports scene, they are going to lose that market; companies like IBM and Radioshack went bankrupt for not evolving with the time, not saying that ESPN is going bankrupt but losing a emerging market of billions of dollars can make anyone puke blood if they understimated how big it would be in the future.

Because it's a "well set" base for this for TV. Sport based channels are about a similar type of competition and have the resources for broadcasting it on TV. If we should want it on TV, that involves the matters of broadening the community and growing the public acceptance of Gamers.

So ESPN will lose a great market? They have NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, all of the College tournments, and world wide, they have Liga MX, Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Copa Libertadores, FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro, Summer and Winter Olympics. I don't think they need E-Sports. But E-Sports need their own TV

I'd be right there with you. Twitch has something like it, but that's not as accessible (as mat pat said) No it's not hard to get to but If you are like me where your internet sucks ass, you can't watch in HD or use anything on the internet to watch it in general (Without going crazy). Put it on the TV and you get something easy to get to, requires a TV (Which I'm pretty sure more people have TVs than computers.) Plus I would just LOVE to see League played on TV and recognized by more than just gamers as a sport.

  • @aoshinn
    @aoshinn6 жыл бұрын

I loved this video and I'll try my best to point out somethings I observed about accessibility of PC gamming in my country (Brazil). First, a quick wikipedia article says: "Video games were not permitted for import into Brazil until the 1990s, and were then heavily taxed as non-essential goods. As a result, a black market developed around pirating games, driven by the lack of official channels for purchasing games. Many game companies avoided expansion into the country for these reasons until the 2010s.[2] Blaming high tariffs, Nintendo officially left the market in 2015, but returned in 2017." Knowing that it's easier to get to a few points: 1 - Games are expensive around here, specially consoles, as you can see in the cheapiest brand new PS4 500GB costing around U$416.05 I found online (against the U$299 on the US), that's mostly taxes. 2 - Games are expensive for US. You see, Brazil has a huge Income inequality and laws and regulations that kind of perpetuate this situation. "Brazil's heavy taxes built into consumer prices include high taxes on foods, which burdens the poor. The tax load of those in the higher income brackets earning more than 30 times the minimum wage a month amounted to 26.3 per cent. In contrast, those with a monthly income of less than twice the minimum wage were taxed almost twice the amount at 48.8 per cent." On top of that 25,4% of the people earn US$ 5,50 a day (it takes 76 days of work for a person like this buy a PS4), and 6,4% earn less than U$1,9 a day. Yeah, I know, that's a WAY worst problem envolving political corruption, market pressure, bank control and even just bad administration, but nonetheless reveal a great problem in one of a HELL of a gamming community. 3 - PCs are way cheapier to have in a home, since it helps in studies and work (and you can buy an old used one and it will still be somewhat ok). In addition, League of Legends has a long range of PC specs which CAN run it in a somewhat "fun" capacity and also is a free game. No wonder why it is the largest gamming community in Brazil and it has it's own local server. 4 - Online games are harder to pirate or fake. The games need local servers to build up competition and - even with Brazil's vast quantity of "private servers" - official competitivity is a pain in the butt for paid games. I know I digress a lot, but I'm trying to produce a game here and I ALSO love playing and watching games. Therefore - in the actual political and economic situation of my country (specially after the 2017 coup) - I can not stay silent. I hope more and more people gets aware of this to maybe change our situation, not only in gaming, but in general

Mattpat, you miss an important aspect of getting esports accepted: the understanding level of the audience. Here's part of the problem, by way of example: I've been playing games since the early 80's. I have a decent amount of free time to game in my adult life, I game with my kids, with my wife, and by myself. I play all kinds of games, on both console and PC, everything from casual clickers to sports games to puzzlers to platformers to RPGs to card battle games. And for the life of me I can't figure out what the f**k is going on, on one of those MOBA screens. Characters are too small, and their movements are unpredictable without having a deep knowledge of team tactics for that specific game. Icons are all over the place, cluttering up the view for anyone who doesn't know what they mean. Messages pop up and disappear before you can read them. The map is essentially useless. Some of these same sorts of things can be said about the more physical sports, to be sure. But most all of us have a sense of moving our bodies, throwing a ball, running, etc. that translates some of what's going on intuitively. But even people like me, with long and broad gaming experience, often can't tell what's happening at any given moment in a MOBA.

The Internet Peasant I think given any amount of time you're eventually bound to learn some of the basics of what's going on. I only watch The Super Bowl and I barely understand the ins and outs of football. It's a state of mind I believe that you want to learn from watching and dedicating the time to watching rather than just clicking on the live stream and thinking everything will be good to go for watching. I'm in the same boat as you, I play pretty much everything but MOBAs and really have no clue what's going on during them, but that's because I've never had the interest to learn.

The reason why people do not think it is a sport is because it is too new. The RTS and FPS are both about 20 years old, and compared to other more traditional forms of entertainment, that is pretty new. People who grew up with older technology will usually stick to it, and it is hard to get older people to play a video game. This is not true 100% of the time, but to me this is mostly true. Also, people do not have the background knowledge to this media form.

DanXD25 have you actually seen an esports team before im part of my own small esports team that competes in amateur tournaments and trust me, they're far from overweight me and my team included, and we do more than sit in front of our computer, we spent as much as 4 months preparing, conditioning and strategizing for one tournements i've broken multiple bones in my hand just for training too hard you have no idea, i started as RT in middle school football and i found that esports was way harder so in my opinion you have no idea what you're talking about

Sports are competitive games. I think esports should be considered a serious thing. I don't care if they aren't considered a real sport. Just as long as it's treated with the same respect.

To answer the ending question, no, I do not watch sports. Something about them has never captivated me and I just sit there wondering why it entertaining to watch a group of people chase a ball. It imagine it must be what my parents feel when they see me playing games.

Decaying Reverie The best is every 4 years, when there is the football world championship, the whole country goes crazy and doesn't speak about anything else....and I'm seemingly the only one around who couldn't care less about this.... Or those funny people who take the statement "I don't care about sports" as some kind of ultimate sin or blasphemy or something.

I definitely agree on all the matters around "eSports should be considered a real sport", and I know I wil be hyped to see the eSports scene get larger and larger and evetually sit as a topic next to traditional sports. But I sometimes wonder, why do we need ppl to consider it a real sport? Why does it even matter if it's being broadcasted on our traditional sport platforms or not? What's wrong if we just look at eSports as eSports, sports as sports, pro gamers as pro gamers, and atheletes as atheletes? I mean, its only a matter of time before this whole genre of "eSports" become as well known as sports, and we also have our own platforms to watch them, why do we need to combine sports and eSports together? Why can't be eSports just be its own independent genre and have a unique "eSports Olympic"?

***** doesn't matter , developers still based their design on console which is easier , less investment , less piracy and a lot more profit (exception for competitive games such as MOBA genre) , since pc got pretty wide range of spec while console is fixed it's a lot more easy for developers , ironic isn't it ? every game developed on pc , but aim toward console , it's just good business.
