I started as a Black Mage and I enjoyed the leveling experience. Maybe its because I always play mages in MMOs, maybe its because I always liked having a Black Mage on my team in Final Fantasy games, idk. Edit: people say it's slow but if you do it right, you're always casting during the GCD whereas melee classes have to just stand there and watch the GCD roll between attacks until they get OGCD abilities.

I may have to try it. Scholar is my favorite job because knowledge of the fight allows you to blow people's mind with how crazy your heals and even damage is. I've had cohealers actually forget about times when we both had to heal because I was solo healing most of the encounter. I miss the old summoner for the same reasons. But I do like the new summoner because I can play while I'm high

A ways back I heard an explanation that there are two kinds of gamers. Innovators and tuners. Innovators enjoy seeking out new things and ways to do things, while tuners seek the thrill of optimizations and mastery of something. BLM absolutely plays into the latter, feeling very rewarding when you gain mastery of it.

Black Mage is a very fun class to play. It's true that level synching and levelling is... Not great. But at level 90 it is perfect. Also Garrett, how dare you besmirch Blue Mage's good name. It is a real job. It's just too strong so it can't go into Duty Finder without a fully premade party. I'm sure once you two jump into it you'll find it having some really fun mechanics and concepts. It's clear why it's not allowed to enter normal duties when you get into it, but with that restriction they basically gave themselves all the design freedom in the world. Shiva's Ice Bow attack? That's a blue mage spell. Titan's Mountain Buster? Blue Mage Spell. The Phantom Train's spooky lights? Blue mage spell, and it deals bonus damage against undead! As a blue mage you'll go learn spells in places like The Burn, Swallow's Compass, Castrum Fluminis (yes there is a Tsukuyomi spell), and many more. Magic that insta-kills enemies whose level are divisible by 5? We got it. Giant rocket fist from Omega? Yes sir, Mustard Bomb too! Granted I'm cherry-picking some fun ones here, but it's amazing and I can't wait to see you guys trying it. Masked Carnivale is also a rather unique set of challenges, puzzles really, and some of them are on the level of being their own Trials, complete with unique boss models and mechanics. I get that you're probably memeing but please do consider giving it a go. It's the most fun class and I'm sure you two will have a field day with it.

Black Mage definitely benefits the most from understanding any given fight, which is fine, I feel. The really annoying part is how much your optimal rotation changes across different levels. I think they fixed the 5ish level window where it was optimal to just spam Freeze (for AOE I think)

I have mained SMN for the last two expansions. Ruin IV used to go up to 4 stacks, based on using your Egi Assault abilities. We would build up to either 2 or 4 stacks, and that would be our only insta cast abilities outside of Bahamut and Phoenix, so we had some of the same mobility limitations as black mage. Timing of Ruin IV was the core requirement for good SMN back in the day. The rework for 6.0 took away the hardest part of summoner AND the second hardest part (maintaining DoTs.) The current rotation is brain dead, but it means that anyone can be good at it, which I appreciate. The black mage storyline is fun, but doesn't go in the "Epic" column the way that Dark Knight does. Banger, maybe? I enjoyed it.

current smn rotatation is only braindead in normal content, in EX/ultimate/savage you still need to plan your rotation and adjust for when you're allowed to stand still for the spells you DO need to cast stationary, AND make sure your gap closer doesn't kill you/everyone else.

  • @katarh

@@Null_Experis Haha true, learned the first time I went into P5S that the draw-in when there is a poison puddle during the first set of tankbsuters is a very bad idea. There's also the considerations of when it's best to plant Garuda's damage puddle - no point in doing it when the boss is going to be dragged 2 seconds later. The opening rotation also has be shifted a couple of GCDs because my group has a dancer and a SCH, and I want to wait until Technical Step and the crit buff are up before using the big Baha blasts.

BLM is all about the rotation: Blizz 3 -> Thunder 1/3 -> Blizz 4 -> Fire 3 -> Fire 4 x3 -> Fire 1/Paradox -> Fire 4 x3, then repeat while throwing in Ice-phase Paradoxes and Foul/Xenoglossy as they come up. Also at high levels the AOE rotation is fun; doing double Flares in a row is the sort of thing that makes the little goblin of destruction that lives in my head dance in glee.

Swiftcast and triple cast are DPS gains when used on fire4 or despair. You might hold a triple cast now that we have stacks, but you want to use swiftcast on cool down without clipping. Once you know a fight, you can adjust a triple cast for movement, but you're going to have surprises while learning a fight where you've already used all of it. Also, it's just disappointing when you have to burn it on paradox.

Honestly, I think BLM is the the most rewarding classes in the game, little can compare to learning a fight perfectly, using all your movility tools right, like a last second teleport to a team mate. By 90 it honestly sometimes feels even more movile than RDM, seeing as it has 2 teleports (one to party members adn another to leylines) 2 stacks of triplecast that gives you insta cast for 3 spells and xenoglossy, your big boom button that is an insta cast and can be saved for mobility. I feel BLM is a bit awkward before 35 but after that it just feels very nice overall and it builds naturally on your tools and powers. By 60 you have all your base rotation and from there it's mostly big booms and mobility tools. I specially like that you get the really big mobility tools after you are used to your turret mage status so you don't rely on them to the point of forgeting the basics of proper positioning and having when to greed and went to accept defeat and cancel your cast. The biggest problem I see with BLM leveling is getting to 60... and then going back down. It's to the point I used to switch my hotbars depending if I was above or below 60.... now I just ive up and stand there for 5 seconds asking myself why blizzard IV isn't working. I honestly would not stop anyone from trying out BLM. it takes a while for you to get good at it, specially using aetherial manipulation (your teleport) but becoming good at black mage really makes you better at the whole game. As for the story, I loved thaumaturge's story but I find the black mage quests fine. Very middle of the road.

I think summoner is kind of a joke atm because it's really easy to play, but this won't last. The thing is, with the change from the old egi system to the primals being spell effects rather than a minion opens the door for them to add new primals to the mix without overcomplicating things. I look forward to summoning Leviathan and Ravana in the future.

If they’re going to add more primals they will need to change the gap between bahamut and Phoenix. You can only use 3 primals and ruin if you’re running optimally.

OK i leveled BLM to 90 and dude? its not a miserable experience AT ALL, its as fun as leveling other classes, its just completely different feel and quite taxing to the mind. So in other classes you hit skill 1,2,3,4,5 and congrats! your optimal! but in black mage you hit 1,2,2,2,2,3 within 15 seconds, and if you move and stop, you have to adjust on the fly to 2,2,3 trying to figure out if you can squeeze another fireball and NOT fucking kill your 15 second fire phase and continue the timer up at all times. spending as little time on Ice mode and prolonging Fire mode. and dude my god the TELEPORTS! aka Aetherial Manipulation! BRUH a 10 second CD instant teleport to your party member! that shit is a Game changer, you greed like a god and you do cast bar races with the boss! nothing is more exhilarating then out firebombing the boss, zipping away to a safe player across the map, milliseconds away from getting hit. so yeah Black mage is sick and not horrible while leveling.

Thing to remember is that Yoshi-P is a BLM main, so the job is always going to be good (in terms of dps). However, there's also the demanding task of figuring out each dance so well that you can avoid having to dance for up to 30 seconds at a time. It's a skill I don't possess, even though I have a lvl 90 BLM! Of the casters, I'm currently favouring SMN over RDM and BLM.

Blm needs high dps, because every move is dps loss. It is really hard to be optimal in fights with lots of movement and you pay for it more than any other job. It has really nothing to do with fact Yoshi-P is playing blm, it simply compensation for dps loss to keep blm at level with other jobs. Its not easy to ballance.

BLM's storyline is pretty cute (at least the bit I've done, til 70), and as you said THM's initial lalafell story is really cute too. When starting out as a Thaumaturge I actually confused it for the main scenario quest initially for the first 10-ish levels because it seemed like the main story progression :p Funnily enough I ended up leveling SMN as a side job due to ending up overlevelled in ARR, and now it's effectively my main job... looking forward to Garrett doing a reverse me :p

I started as black mage because when I finally decided to try XIV, I asked my friend which class would be the closest one to fire mage from WoW... and boy... I feel like home because just like fire mage, it was awful to level (it would have been much worse if I had done it alone, luckily, I was riding on my friend's shoulders who leveled warrior). I won't lie, it is very frustrating. Not only the job itself can be infuriating because of the lack of mobility and the fact that the bosses seem to have some sort of secret coding to target a black mage the instant we pop leylines, but also people loooves to run with aoe towards you (bards... for the love of Hydaelyn... stop running into me, you're the ones who can move), but just like Pint said, when the stars align, and you know the fight, it feels incredibly rewarding to end up an encounter with no vuln stacks and no deaths. Mastering, or at least getting an inkling, on how slidecasting works (knowing that threshold of the cast where you can move at the very end so it still goes off) helps tons. Also, I really enjoyed the story for the job quests. They're not drk good, but still I would say it's in my top 5, easy.

  • @deelanmj

BLM's job quest story is okay. Not the best when compared to the others, but at least it's not as bad as Paladin's. And I'm saying this as a Paladin main. 😂 BLM was my very first job when I started playing because I like fire and I like burning stuff. It's the selfish DPS for casters because they don't provide any raid buff or utility aside from Addle (compared to RDM's Embolden and SMN's Searing Light - both of which are damage buffs). The biggest challenge was doing the rotation correctly while stationary AND not get hit by mechanics. That meant knowing the fight from start to finish cause you would know the safest spots to stand on for your burst phase. Because when you got those Ley Lines down, you absolutely MUST milk every single second it's up, even if it meant (in worst cases) eating those AoEs and getting those not-so-delicious vul stacks.

BLM Story Line ist not really bad. But in Lore, it is a Forbidden Art. Being tied very closely to the Void and Voidsent, it is an alluring Power which can turn even People in the World evil or possessed by an strong Voidsent forever. During the Heavensward Story for BLM tells us that not everyone can just use the Black Magic Arts without Risk, but I don't want to spoil it now. If you want to try it, you need to prepare to know every Raid and Trial more than your actual Rotation with Ley Lines in play

BLM is a job that at some point I started leveling and it felt comfy in its simplicity until I started reaching higher and higher levels and it pissed me off more and more at how incredibly flimsy its rotation was. The slightest inconvenience and you have to take a massive L and reset the entire rotation. Then at some point at level 80 I got some spell speed on me and... it clicked? It was fun. Like, the BLM doesn't have damage amp spells as much as it has anti-fuck up tool. Once you understand what tools you have to back you up, you start being able to be a bit more flexible, and the job becomes fun. But to know how to properly BLM, you first have to learn how to suck at BLM. That shit's depression made gameplay until you finally figure out what your job is and what you should be looking for and your brain goes like "OH!". After that, it's a very fun job to have a second take on a fight you think you have mastered and would like to test your skills against. Also, now is the best time to start playing BLM after they got rid of that hellspawn that was Enochian and they made it a passive. Now fucking up isn't *nearly* as punishing. Just very demoralizing.
