Summary: I visited Lindsay Blackstock at the University of Alberta to learn about her ingenious method for measuring the amount of pee in a pool by looking at the concentration of an artificial sweetener called Acesulfame Potassium. We looked at some samples from some pools in my area to determine how much pee was in them and I conducted an experiment of my own to see what was the cause of that "classic pool smell". I also presented average amounts of pee in large pools as well as an equation to determine how much pee is in your own pool.

But what if the pool has a filter system? I mean the pools i go to have drains for excess water that overflows ( due to the displacement of water when someone swims ). The drains are placed throughout the perimeter of the pool. and there is always new water being introduced ( from the a fountain or like tap ish thing at the bottom ), doesn't this make a pool that filters the water to be cleaner? If assuming, the water that is drained is properly treated and then pumped back in.

It’s not true. Pools also do smell if no one pees in the water. Sweat and other dirt on your skin is totally enough. That’s why public pools want you to shower before you go swimming so that they don’t need to put in as much chlorine.

Holy crap... Thank you Mark cuz NOW i understand how I have minor asthma despite being very atheletic for years. Long story short, I LOVED swimming to the point I plan to swim every day in college if possible but recently Ive developed Asthma despite it not being a family trait. But now, knowing that Trichloramine can cause asthma, I gotta hold back on swimming.... (or find a place without chlorine+pee swimming pool) Hoping my college keeps track of this or Im gonna be in trouble XD

No, that smell isn't pee per se, it's an odor produced when chloramines react with ammonia-derivatives to form nitrogen trichloride (or trichloramine as referenced in the video). Chloramines react with all organic matter, including pee, sweat, oil and dirt. If you smell that odor in an outdoor pool, the pool owner/maintainer is not doing a very good job of chemically balancing the pool and something is off. A pool that's maintained correctly will smell like *nothing at all.* Source: Pool owner for many years.

Science class at most schools usually isn't taught by someone who actually cares about or knows much about science. Imaginary numbers are usually introduced as some curious entity in algebra; usually taught without context to rotation, you never learn the more advanced applications like quaternions for rotation in 3 space without gimbal lock (you usually won't learn about these unless you happen to take an advanced course in computer graphics). Most K-12 teachers have never even come close to this level of education in math or science themselves.
