Meadow Well BBC
The Tyneside riots in the North Shields housing estate, Meadow Well, notorious for disaffected residents, erupted in blazing fury on the evening of Monday 9th September, 1991.
BBC North news the following night reported the devastation and explored causes and remedies.
As usual, politicos of all flavours denied any responsibility, blaming the unrest on wayward youth and "criminal elements". One local MP stated that the police were powerless to keep order on the Tyneside streets, an accusation denied by the Chief Constable. For so long as these people squabble with each other nothing will be done to improve the lives of the residents of this and other similar areas.

A reminder of how grim so much of Britain was in the 80s and into the 90s. The root cause of it all was extreme poverty, very poor education and chaotic families. Nothing has changed.
I got my car bricked. It went on long after it was reported. That was deliberate

It wasn’t that bad. I worked for the local authority at the time and used to go regularly. There weren’t gangs and guns, just a lot of people who thought the police murdered those two lads. The police and the criminals all knew each other so it was kind of personal. I remember seeing the father of one who went on tv to counter the rumor the boys were joy riding. They were doing no such thing he said, they were professional criminals who were doing a job!
I was in Durham jail with a few lads that were remanded for involvement in these riots

I grew up there, I was a teenager during the riots. The police were nowhere near enough to ram them off the road. It was all just an excuse to act like animals. So glad I got out of there. @ Lynsey Mills - learn how to spell and form proper sentences you illiterate moron.
