MDMA, Psychotherapy, and the Future of PTSD Treatment | Brad Burge | TEDxSalem

Rethinking the role of psychedelic drugs and how they can help to improve the lives of our country’s military personnel and others suffering from PTSD.
Interpretation for TEDxSalem V (2018) was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. The volunteer student interpreters were supported by volunteer, certified interpreters in order to minimize potential errors. Your support of these pre-professional interpreters’ growing skills is appreciated. Brad Burge is the Director of Strategic Communications for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Brad earned his B.A. in Communication and Psychology from Stanford University in 2005 and his M.A. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego in 2009. He began working with MAPS in 2009, where he engages daily with journalists and media producers around the world to enhance public knowledge about psychedelic research, while also helping develop and evolve MAPS' brand and outreach strategy. Brad is passionate about finding better ways for humans to work with the pharmaceutical and digital communications technologies of the 21st century. When he’s not plugged in, you’ll find him in the mountains, carrying a backpack, somewhere down a long trail. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Viktor oh. You really do have to make sure it’s just mdma. Usually, the illegal ones will sometime have other drugs that you dont want like MDA or MA in there which is way more toxic and addictive. I do have an addictive tendency and it took my over more than 6 months to stop the urge completely trying just once. It also changes my personality a tad bit like...caring less about what other people think and less scared of doing things by alot...which is great but you know.... I did it without supervision because well, I was in that bad of a situation. So I somehow manage to get going with certain rave party people and they gave me one. It was not a good time for them because they have to listen to me like a counselor for hours when we suppose to be enjoying music. 😂

I wanted to feel happy like i did when i was dancing...it allowed me to talk to friends...remember things i didnt remember....now I dance with out it and like pavlovian response music makes me happy. I'm glad you're feeling better. Still, it's not very wise to promote self-therapy here. (Not moralizing either, I've been using MDMA as a recreational drug since quite a while now ...) But it works _very_ differently for people who actually want to heal themselves from their PTSD. Plus, 275 mg of MDMA is an unreasonably high dose that might induce serious (!) adverse or even dangerous reactions in some people. So if anyone nevertheless decides to try self-medication (which I don't recommend) start with a lower dose. As far as I know in most therapeutic sessions doses of around 120mg are used. That depends on body weight, though. For me (even for recreational use) 80 mg are enough. I weigh 60 kg. You can figure out the right dose by multiplying your body weight in kilograms with a factor of 1.3 (for light effects) to 1.5 (for medium effects). So assuming you're weight is 80 kg and you wish to have light effects, take 104 mg of MDMA. (80 x 1.3 = 104) If you wish to have medium effects, take 120 mg of MDMA. (80 x 1.5 = 120) This applies for medical use as well as for recreational use. Stay safe. It can save your life.

As a psychotherapist who treats PTSD I'm excited about what MAPS is doing and am working diligently to have my team trained so we can bring this breakthrough treatment to Idaho. I'm oversimplifying how I believe it works but under the influence of MDMA the ego appears to dissipate or diminish allowing the patient to have a healthier relationship to the traumatic memory. I entered my war the day I was born. I could not allow a child to live in even a portion of those circumstances, so it is very surprising to me it took 39 years to understand and accept my childhood was a serious of traumatic events. It’s unfortunate I realized this during a global pandemic, because everyone I’ve reached out to so far is not accepting new patients. I’m tired, really tried. If I didn’t have my dog I’d be completely alone. 🤞I can find help soon, but if I don’t make it I am so grateful for the drip of peace I felt when I figured out I’m not an alien/alone. The day I found complex post traumatic stress disorder was the first time I’ve ever felt any amount of peace. Good luck everyone 💚 Thank you Ted talks, thank you everyone who shares. Due to the anti psychotics I take for my paranoid schizophrenia MDMA has no effect on me, I've tried crystals with high purity but sadly nothing happened. I've done MDMA and psylocibin in my youth, both helped me understand my depression and open up again, moved me from apathy to empathy and I was hoping for that effect again. My meds numb out any emotion and I feel like a robot, but I cant stop taking them or else the voices and hallucinations will return. Too many banned substances should be legal for theraputic purposes

The funny thing is any recreational MDMA user would look at these clinical trial results and say, "well yeah, duh, of course it has that effect." It's unfortunate so many people who could use this treatment have to suffer while officials jump through political hoops to confirm what everyone has already known for 40+ years.

I think there would be less need for drugs on the streets which are loaded with dangerous “other” ingredients if people were able to legally get what THEY need to help them.If a drug can help even ONE person it should be a legal option.Teaching people to use their drug responsibly to heal and empower themselves can be done safely if doctors and therapists would listen to their patients and ask the right questions, while being educated enough to guide them in the right direction.Of course, big pharma doesn’t want anyone to actually get better.Sad
