The psychedelic renaissance | Stephen Bright | TEDxUniMelb

Psychedelic drugs: a dangerous and illegal scourge; a harmless way to “turn on, tune in, drop out” - or a valuable treatment for mental illness? Research is showing that substances like MDMA and magic mushrooms, long banished to society’s fringes, are proving effective in treating everything from PTSD to nicotine addiction. In this talk, Stephen Bright explores the recent re-emergence of psychedelic science and discusses why this field is absent from the Australian research landscape.
Dr Stephen Bright is a clinically-trained psychologist. He is a Senior Lecturer of Addiction at Edith Cowan University in Perth and a founding board member of PRISM, an Australian not-for-profit set up to advance the cause of psychedelic research.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Depression/anxiety not only runs in my family... it runs in me. Psychedelics have provided me with a new perspective and appreciation for life. It’s saved me from ending my life, or choosing a life of comfort and safety. I want excitement. Psychedelics have brought out the dreaming inner child in me again and i am SO grateful.

    I vouch for this from personal experience 100%. I have suffered with PTSD and received tax payer funded ACC counselling on and off for 20 years in NZ. After 3 years of research, I flew to Australia from NZ to illegally take Ayahuasca. (a hallucinogenic DMT containing plant medicine) At the time I was suicidal and had little hope. If this didn't work I would most likely kill myself. After 2 Ayahuasca sessions I was completely transformed. 3 months later I still am. My hypervigilent PTSD symptoms are gone. It has completely transformed my life. At this time I was 20 year sober n AA. I am also a qualified addiction counselor with a degree in Psychology. These are life saving drugs that MUST be researched.

    It's been covered thoroughly, in my honest opinion, since Milton Friedman. Bill Hicks was the last sound voice of reason, even though he was only a comedian. I'm sticking with demanding Congress implement a negative income tax and pharmacological freedom/drug liberalization. The war on drugs is subsidizing the military, medical, and prison industrial complexes in America and Richard Baum (ONDCP) does not seem to be the right person to mention to the Don, King Con, what really needs to be happening. "Acceptance and Forgiveness; it's the only tools we've got left. And Evolution if you're interested in it." -- Bill Hicks "The role of the government is to protect the drug cartel." -- Milton Friedman "Poison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy." -- Paracelsus

    Look at things more positively my friend. Unlike other drugs and medicine, psychedelics come from Earth (And the darknet lol). If the capitalists jack up the prices of the psychedelics, people will simply find other ways to do it and buy a test kit on amazon to ensure what they have is safe. The meaning and interpretations that came to me during my awakening was that, psychedelics should not be used to take down factions and governments, but rather to deeply evaluate the pros and cons of a particular system from a viewpoint outside of the ego and to find an enlightened methodology to regain balance and harmony. To be ego-less does not mean you are a good person, to be an egotist does not mean you are a bad person, find a balance and master both sides of the coin. Cheers.

    The 'Insanity' situation might be slight but it does happen in the sense that LSD can precipitate and trigger preexisting, latent conditions, so a screening process might be of the essence. However, virtually all of those situations seem to have occurred in cases of unsupervised, self-experimentation. Very seldom, if ever, does it seem to have happened in controlled settings, under strict medical supervision. And of course in aboriginal cultures that made/make use of Peyote, San Pedro, Ayahuasca, Iboga, Psilocybe, etc...you don't hear about people jumping off trees, trying to eat dirt or 'going insane'.

  • @opentrunk

    @opentrunk

    Well, maybe, but the thought of taking LSD "in controlled settings, under strict medical supervision" sounds exactly like what I don't want to experience on LSD. On the other hand, back in the day, I saw many many people have psychotic experiences on LSD (I'd say the figure was closer to 10% than .01%) so I remain rather skeptical when I hear all this recent talk about it being a cure-all for mental disorders. Some of my friends never came back to this planet. And taking LSD for anxiety reduction sounds almost laughable to me, but maybe that's because I never tried micro-dosing.

    Please know psychedelics can trigger psychosis which can mean terrrifying mental images, flashbacks, being unable to speak or eat or drink, deranged behavior, violence, inability to work and function, loss of intelligence, creative skills, cognitive skills, extreme depression, loss of identity, inability to parent, suicide, delusions, paranoia, auditory and visual hallucinations, loss of job, hospitalization, and possibly homelessness. The depression afterwards can be severe and take years to recover from. Many people have suffered. I’m not exaggerating.
