Great video, but always open the fuel tank cap to relieve pressure. It will reduce the amount of gas that comes out of those lines because it will relieve pressure

Loved the video. Only thing I'd do differently is to start the car and check for leaks before lowering it and putting the shield back on

This was extremely helpful, thanks! I saw the comments about the excessive fuel runoff. I went through the full fuel system depressurization process (disconnecting fuel pump electrical and starting it, plus opening fill cap) and still flowed out non-stop. I think it’s more that the filter is below the tank and gravity/siphon causes this. If I had to do it again, would use some kind of clamp on the hose. Appreciate the work that went into this and that it made it easier for me to do this repair!!

Thanx for ur vid, it helped me alot !! Ive a mx5 na 1.8 (131) 1995, and changed the fuel filter this afternoon. 30mins, released the fuel cap, only took off 3 of the plastic screws on the plastic shield and pulled it back out of the way. Disconnected the 10mm retainer first, then slackened the inlet and clamped the tube, pulled it off but imediatetly pushed the new filter onto the tube. Then pulled off outlet tube and again pushed on new filter end. Very little fuel spillage !! Job went to plan, also as someone advised i started the car up and checked underneath that there were no leaks !!

I just bought a miata that stood for 3 years. Now it sits in my driveway waiting for parts, however, I do have this part. It looks like a project for this afternoon, especially since it now has no petrol in it. I'll fill some after and hopefully it will run a little better.

Did this today went great just lift the car a little higher and spray the hoses with alot of wd 40. After i installed it put the key in accessory for 15 seconds then turn it on mught take 2 trys, but my problem was the car wouldnt turn on in the first place so i replaced the fuel filter it still wouldn't turn on so i disconnected the fuel pump clip in the fuel pump cleaned it with rubbing alcohol then inserted it back in then next thing you know the car turned on runs very excellent with the new filter you can really feel the difference in the pedal. Good luck guys dont give up

Hey man, great video. I just got a '93 Miata and I'm going to do this tomorrow. I am having some idle dropoff issues and I'm hoping it's something so simple as a clogged up fuel filter, and not something really expensive like an IAC. I've subscribed, and I look forward to any more Miata videos you post!

If you open the cap on the fuel tank you will release the pressure in the tank. Doing that you will not have all that fuel spilled. It's normal to some to come out, but not that much. Another thing you can do is starve your engine of fuel. That way you don't have fuel on the lines too. For the perfect way is doing those two things.

I'm about to replace the fuel filter on my '94. It makes sense to me to first disconnect the battery, then pull the fuel pump and supply and return lines (on top of the tank) thus isolating fuel system from the tank. That way the only fuel leaked would be the residual in the pump to filter line and whats left in the filter to the pressure regulator line. If anyone can tell me a better way please reply. I like to hear why ideas won't or will work.

  • @cardesinr

Seams like a lot of extra work for no reason unless you also want to replace the pump. There is no reason to need the battery needs to be disconnected. The only reason there was a small amount of fuel leaking out because the tank was still pressurized which can be fixed by removing the fuel cap. There will be fuel spilage since you are replacing a fuel filter.

My 99 mx5 died on me at a red light. I had to push it to the nearby McDonald's parking lot. Couldn't get it to crank, despite the battery having plenty of juice.. my best guess, and I admit I'm not very car savvy when it comes to troubleshooting, would be a possibly clogged fuel filter? My doofus brother rebuilt the car so ... After writing 1/2 of this post theres honestly no telling whats Wrong with it. It may be worth noting that ever since I picked up the car from NC and drove it to AL, it's never cranked on the first attempt. I always had to try cranking it, the motor would kick on and run only to stop like 1 second later.. I'd leave the key on, presumably to let fuel get to where it needs to be, then try again, where it almost always started on the second attempt. So I bought a new fuel filter in hopes of it resolving my problem

@@KojiWoji_ I ended up replacing the fuel pump, the fuel pump filter, and the fuel pump gasket (couldn't get the original to seal completely so a new one was required) in a couple of hours. I'm kinda slow :/ I also used the recm'd amount of seafoam for a full tank of gas. The amounts are listed on the bottle if/when you get one. Once I had the parts changed out and ran the first tank with seafoam in it, it cranked instantly on the first turn over.
