Which of these crossovers is best for your family? Both the 2021 Hyundai Palisade and 2021 Mazda CX-9 are highly rated SUVs here on Chasing Cars. But which three-row vehicle is best?
In today’s Chasing Cars comparison, we pitch the new six-seat CX-9 Azami LE AWD against the seven-seat Palisade Highlander AWD - both SUVs optioned with captain’s chairs in the centre row - but to expand seating you can opt for a bench instead.
Other options in this segment include the Toyota Kluger/Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder. Sadly, Kia doesn’t offer the Telluride in Australia. Not yet, at least!

My family has just done the same comparison after the last few weeks and we chose the Mazda. The reasons were a) both my wife and I found the Mazda far more luxurious than the Hyundai b) our 2 kids loved the captains chairs in the Mazda. The perception of luxury is a personal choice so others may disagree but the leather and soft touch materials on the steering wheel, doors and console really lifted the Mazda vs the Palisade. Tom is spot in that the captains chairs are a pain to move back and forward but for us, we will spend 90%-95% of the time as a family of 4 in the car and other 5% couriering kids friends and family to weekend sporting events etc Because of this the captains seats were more about the luxury set-up and feel vs the Palisade. From a driving perspective the Mazda was brilliant. No doubt it will be thirsty but the driving is outstanding. I actually really like the Palisade and the decision was a close one for our family. The Palisade is definitely ahead in terms of the tech - no question. Also interior space is definitely a win for the Hyundai. Finally the option of diesel will be a big swayer for some. On the downside for us is the Palisade is big. Interesting that the Mazda is longer but in no way does it feel anywhere near as big as the Palisade. For my wife who is only 5'5 she felt like she was climbing into and sitting in a truck. Finally there have been a number of comments about the CX-9's lack of 3 row air vents. We actually did a test where may son sat in the 3rd row for a test drive and by adjusting the airflow at the 2nd row the 3rd row was able to receive the air conditioning. Obviously not ideal but it did help to lessen the potential issue. When we first starting looking at SUVs (we tested the Kluger, Kia Sorrento, Mazda CX-9 & Hyundai Palisade) I was told it will be a personal choice. I kept thinking there has to a "best" option. A couple of months later and I 100% believe it is the one that suits you or / and your family the best.

Very good review and well balanced. I drove both of these vehicles muliple times, as well as most of the other brands, then checked the user forums. Almost all 3 row SUVs have them. You will learn a great deal from the people that actually own these SUVs. For me, I put a premium on driving dynamics and reliability over a little more space, since I didn't appreciate the minivan feel of some of the 3 row SUVs. Here, I'm sure everyone else will have different priorities which is why there are so many different brands. I always discount comments about the exterior appearance, since looks are subjective. Its the the old "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" thing. For me I like the looks of the CX9. I also like the looks of the Corvette, all model years are beautiful to me and I hope for the return of tail fins, of course I can dream, right?

I prefer the Hyundai's interior, but that is personal preference. It's returning 8.4L/100kms on average over 3,000kms so far. Stereo is really clear and strong. A highlight. I live in the U.S., and I previously owned a 2019 Mazda CX-9, Grand Touring model, which looks similar to this CX-9 that was reviewed, with the exception that mine had the full bench for the 2nd row. In June, 2021, I traded in the CX-9 and purchased the Hyundai Palisade Limited FWD, which is similar to the Highlander with the exceptions that mine has the gas engine, diesel isn’t available in the U.S., and the Limited as a few more options like digital dash and powered folding 2nd and 3rd row seats. I actually loved the CX-9, it has great handling and it’s fun to drive. Fortunately, due to the increasing demand and prices for used vehicles, I was able to take advantage of the situation and get a very nice trade in value for my CX-9, which allowed me to get the larger Palisade. After driving the Palisade for the past two months, I truly prefer it over the CX-9. On the highway the Palisade does much better on the gas mileage, even though it’s bigger. Of course, there’s far more room in the Palisade and the third row is actually useable. Being a music lover, I truly prefer the more realistic sound of the Harmon Kardon stereo than I do the Bose. The rear vent setup in the Palisade is also much better, being in the roof, and the vehicle cools quicker than the CX-9. Lastly, I replaced the stock tires, which were Hankook’s, and purchased Michelin CrossClimate2’s, and the handling is wonderful. Heavy rain and occasional snow won’t be a problem with this rubber on the road. Like I said, both vehicles are great and will serve you well but if space is an issue, definitely get the Palisade, you’ll be happy. You don’t have to use the third row but if you ever need it, it’s a decent place to sit.

Excellent review thank you! Sadly in Australia we don't get the Harmon Karon stereo, our only option is the absolutely rubbish Infinity. As a musician, and a Mum, it's the one thing really holding me back from buying the Palisade. We're upgrading from a GT CX5 with a premium Bose stereo and the sound difference is massive. If we had either the Bose or the Harmon Karon stereo in the Palisade here in Australia, I'd sign on the dotted line and hand over my $80K for the 2022 Palisade Highlander immediately.

Great review, thankyou. I'm considering the Hyundai and the areas where you find it was better than the Mazda happen to be the areas that matter for me (practicality with baby seats in place, flexibility of load carrying, fuel economy on long hauls). So even though the Mazda won your comparison with it's particularly good ride/handling mix and that great looking interior, your review actually still confirmed my view that the Hyundai is probably the right choice for me and my family... unless we stretch to an older and higher km Audi Q7... hmm... choices choices...

For an American (like me) it's interesting to see an Australian perspective on these crossovers, each of which is typically classified as a "midsize" SUV by American standards. Some thoughts. The US spec CX-9 is nearly identical to the Australian version. Same engine and drivetrain. Almost all of the same features. Though I don't have exact figures on sales in Australia my impression is that the Mazda brand is considerably more popular there than here in the US. That appears to be especially the case for the CX-9. In fact, the CX-9 has been the worst selling mainstream midsize SUV (19th out of 19) in the US ever since the current generation was introduced in 2017. In 2020 it was even outsold by eight "luxury" SUVs. The good news, such as it is, is that 2020 sales of the CX-9 in the US were basically flat at slightly over 27,000 units but that did nothing to overcome its dismal pattern of declining sales ever since its introduction. The US version of the Palisade is a different story, altogether. No diesel version offered in North America. The sole engine and drivetrain option is a 3.8L naturally aspirated V6 petrol with an 8 speed conventional AT. (That's not unusual. In the wake of VW's "dieselgate" the limited appeal of diesel engines in the US for passenger cars disappeared altogether. That killed not only VW's diesels but that of other brands as well.) Furthermore, the V6 running the Atkinson cycle is offered in both FWD and AWD versions, a choice apparently not available in Australia. Unlike the CX-9, the Palisade and its closely related KIA cousin the Telluride (built and available only in North America) have enjoyed huge success in North America. In 2020 Palisade sales were three times (!) those of the CX-9 in the US. The combination of Palisade and Telluride sales in 2020 (157,000 units), was nearly 6 times that of the CX-9. (The combined sales of the Korean twins would have been even greater if not for the result of COVID-19 in terms of production delays of the Telluride in the US.) The basis for the disparity in sales isn't difficult to explain. Americans, perhaps more than Australians, value interior space in midsize 3 row SUVs. On that score the CX-9 sits at the bottom of the category while the Palisade (ironically slightly shorter than the CX-9) is near the top. The CX-9 provides a total of 135.1 cubic ft of passenger volume; the Palisade offers 155.3 cf. The cargo space in the CX-9 is 14.4, 38.2, and 71.2 cubic ft behind the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st rows respectively. The Palisade counters with 18, 45.8, and 86.4 cubic ft. In fact the total cargo space of the CX-9 is not only small considering the oeverall length of the vehicle; it's less than a Honda CR-V! Like this video review, American automotive journalists have long praised the driving "feel" and handling characteristics of the CX-9. But reviewers have largely ignored or minimized the incredibly inefficient packaging of the Mazda. In the US at least, most consumers haven't made that mistake.

@@NeedSpeedRC Remaining "true to their ethos" isn't a successful strategy when the marketplace doesn't support it through purchases and that's the case for the CX-9 at least in North America where an SUV the size of the CX-9 is expected to have more interior room than a compact crossover.

Hyundai Palisade solved one particular problem I haven't been able to find solution in any of the previous offering in Australian market other than Hiace van Kia Carnival or bigger. Some useful space behind third row just enough for a family weekend away, even with only half of the third row used for seat. We are not talking about tents and bikes, just a 26inch suitcase with a few duffle bags, some kids toys. With the smaller portion of third row folded down, Palisade offers that ideal luggage space but not the CX9 or Santa Fe or Kluger.

Hyundai do not give us the full digital speedo display or black nappa leather interior's available in other countries, yet expect us to pay a whopping premium compared to what these countries pay. It doesn't even tow as much as the new Santa fe. The Mazda is 5 yrs old and has improved to the point where it is now. This make me think " it drives better but is more expensive to run and will probably be replaced by new generation within 2 to 5yrs , killing resale value " With the above thoughts I will go with the Palisade, mainly because I can't see another generation coming within the next 5yrs. If they were both entering the market at the same time I'd go the CX9.

I am considering the Palisade as a soft roader alternative to a Prado VX or Kakadu. Really focuses the question on what you need for what you do and what will you enjoy long term. For us, we like luxury but our Lexus is taking a pretty good beating from gear and people, not sure the Hyundai would hold up as well or be as durable as we need, it’s a case of you do you. I won’t get into the diesel for city trips debate but you’d hope buyers are aware of the need to take it for a regular good long runs to avoid DPF problems long term.... give that point to the petrol Mazda.

I compared the Telluride and Durango, to the Palisade. Anyway, the black interior is super common here and I believe the dash is upgraded on US models. (Also, we can’t get the diesel motor, but AWD is standard. The back up cameras and sideview cameras are different in the US market too. On the US Palisade when you use your turn signal a sideview camera shows your blind spot on that side. It also has a top down view for hooking up a trailer and auto leveling rear axle.) Anyway, I enjoyed your review but the vehicles are just too different, even though they carry the same name.)

Yes, they are very similar. The underpinnings are exactly the same, like the engine and transmission. The only differences are really just cosmetic. Most people in the US are of the opinion that if you’re more interested in exterior appearances that you would get the Telluride, and if you prefer the more plush interior, you get the Palisade. If you didn’t know, in 1998 Hyundai bought Kia and is the parent company. Hyundai’s luxury brand is Genesis and if I could have afforded it, I would have been shopping for one of those! ha!

Don't know about Australia, But the palisade is much more expensive than the CX-9 in NZ. For the price difference, the Mazda definitely wins imo. $100k for the palisade base spec, while top spec cx-9 is just bit more than $72k

Great review. Palisade wins for me with the fabulous practical seating and huge airy feeling. The Mazda is nice but feels claustrophobic inside for such a large car. Yes its suspension is better but the negatives of the interior packaging and drab darkness is offputting. I think kids in row 3 of the Mazda will get car sick easier due to the truncated glass area.

You would be incorrect. Consumer reports now rates Mazda as the most reliable car brand for 2021. It's the only automaker in many years that has taken Toyota and Lexus off the first and second labeling of Consumer reports.. Hyundai was ranked number 10 and the Kia numbered 19. Mazdas are also exclusively made in Japan which makes them very reliable cars. Nobody builds cars like the Japanese in terms of reliability. I'm a Lexus owner with over 300,000 miles on the engine and a transmission that has never been rebuilt. A completly trouble free car. I also own a Mazda CX-9 2019 for the last 2 years. The previous two cars that I drove were Toyota and they never ever gave me problems that usually an older car gives (one Problem on top of another). Imagine you trust the company, you get a brand new car thinking that “hey it’s a new car. Are they worried about the Mazda 2.2L Diesel blowing up like it did a lot in the CX5? I like the outside of the CX9 (it proportionally looks better) but the inside practicality of the Palisade. We all know that a lot of people that buy these only have two kids which kind of makes them a bit overkill for our pokey little roads where every inch less helps. I can see why they buy them when you look at the boots in mid size SUVs. If only a manufacturer could build a SUV that is bigger then a mid size (4.5m long) and smaller then a CX9 (5.08m)....4.7m would be bang on. Not everyone wants 7 seats and a 5m long vehicle with more seats then needed.
