Finally picked up my 2022 G25 Astina Hatch in Snowflake White Pearl with a manual gearbox (after 6 long months of waiting) last Friday, and I fell in love the moment I saw it. Amazing vehicle and I’m completely smitten with my purchase - being that it’s my first ever brand new car makes it even sweeter. Fantastic review, as always 🚗💨

I wasn't sure what car I was going to get but after a few talks with friends and family I got the 2022 hatchback Mazda3 Carbon Edition. First time new car buyer and after a month of having it I have absolutely fell in love with it. I've had turbo charged engines both manual transmission in the past and I wanted a naturally aspirated engine daily automatic driver. Couldn't be happier with my choice of car.

Couldn't be happier with my '20 manual Astina. A bit bummed about the updated full circle taillights on all variants and black wheels on this SP making the Astina a tad less special outside however the headlights/DRLs, quad circle taillights and shiny b-pillars are still nice. I think I prefer the older style indicators as well.

Great review! In downsizing from my VF Calais V (thankfully, my son is keeping it in the family now), I spent many hours comparing cars around the 4.5m Max length. Eg. Cerato GT, Hybrid Corolla, VW Golf and Honda Civic. After 3 test drives with 3 hours of country/city/highway drive. The Mazda 3 won for reasons of: Finish quality Aesthetics; Soul red for me When I sat in the test car, it felt just right. Highway sound was as quiet as the Calais. Safety features are high. Speed signs in Melbourne are lost amongst no parking signs, trees, too high, not positioned in a driver's normal vision in many cases. I could go on. I wanted the head up speed sign recognition. Proven Mazda engine/build quality. I also have a MX5 NA8 with 208,000 kms. It still drives like new. This car is intended to be my last; the firm city ride is fine for me and works nicely on country roads. My 3 GT is due in April '22. 👍

Bought the sp25 evolve more than a year ago and it’s a great daily. I don’t find the city ride firm at all, I thinks it’s dialled really well. After more than year I’ve been averaging on the low side of 7L/100km. My only complaints are the side mirrors are more on the smaller side considering the C/D pillars are really on the way of the rear/side view, and the speakers are shite! But, the Pros on this car makes more than for its little shortcomings. My only regret is I should’ve bought the Astina variant. I regret not having the sunroof, Bose sound system, and that beautiful burgundy interior! People if your reading this and want a mazda3… get the Astina or the turbo if it comes out

Good day Tom. I am not a fan of the hatch. The bulgy bum doesn't do it for me. Having said that, after a 5 month wait, I took delivery of my Mazda 3 sedan 2.5 litre sedan with a manual in deep crystal blue. Why people go on and on about power and speed gets me. I find that the 139 kw engine is more than enough. Apart from a couple of oddities, I am completely happy with it. Cheapness - fitting halogen DRLs on a vehicle with LED front and rear lights and the lack of telltale lights on the selector switches for HVAC.

Great review as always. Although I have to mention that you are the first person who liked the backseat. Almost every reviewer complained about the space and the lack of light at the backseats. And yes as you mentionec if you install isofix base and a rear facing child seat you have to push the front seat forward quite a bit which doesn't leave much room for the front passanger. A fantastic car but I wouldn't recommended it for people with two kids.

I spent ages agonising over several cars in this segment. Ended up with the Mazda 3 G20 Pure (base edition) as most of the bells and whistles exist from the base model up. I went for the auto asazda have started reducing the number of models available in manual and it seems obvious that it will be far more appealing on the 2nd hand market. I opted for the Solar Red metallic as I think its the best colour for the car. Will add darker window tinting all round and ceramic paint protection whichakes washing the car and keeping it new looking a breeze. The looks really sold it for me and when you sit inside it's a lot more special than you would usually expect. Premium quality. Not being delivered till end of July. 😕

I was hoping you'd review this model more then the car itself. I am going to try and buy a Mazda 3 this year and the fact they just updated the range again with a few nice changes to each model, it's making it hard to pick. First I was content with a G20 Pure, then I looked at the Evolve and though those few upgraded to be worth the price, recently seen you can get the G20 Touring for $35,000 basically and was highly interested but then this pops up for another $1000 more for the G25 engine. Bigger difference I guess for features is the seats because even though Mazda advertise this to be above the Touring and say for features, in addition to, they failed to include leather seats. Still a 2.5L engine vs a 2.0L engine, I wonder how much I care about leather seats. Really think the G25 Evolve SP would look so good in Machine Grey with the black trims and red stitching inside.

The Arteon is hoe atly their best looking car but is probably getting ready to go the way of the dodo. That segment of full size mainstream is weird as prices go everywhere and not many competitors to compare and contrast. But just from my quick Google searches and also what I remember of vw car reviews and others, vws are more pricey while offering the same stuff or less all in a brandish package and most importantly less reliable.

Hi all, if you can afford the Astina x20 model with SPCCI engine it is worth it for the fuel economy. Car needs to be run in carefully and mileage above 8000 kilometres. The fuel economy starts to be in the 6-6.5 litres/ 100km then slowly increases to 5.5 litres/100 km. Which is where I am at the moment with just over 5200 kilometres. I have read several overseas comments of 4.5-5 litres/100km so range estimation increases from 680 to 930 at the 10000 kilometre mark. Unfortunately the road test cars are always low mileage and this gives the impression of the premium paid for the Astina x20 as not worth the expense. It is well put together, very nice interior, low noise, good ride, consistent highway steering. Nice low revving character (max torque at 3000)which may contribute to long term durability. No turbo and still revvable to 6500 rpm. All round good drive and doesn’t need to be thrashed to be enjoyable. 4 months on and no regrets. Cheers.

For that to pay off, at $1.80/l, you'd need to drive an enormous amount. That's a saving of roughly $180 every 10,000km - so, to make the 3 grand or so, you'd need to drive somewhere like 170,000km. That's not worth it, especially given what that price difference could be worth with compound interest.

It beats an SUV, but that isn’t the direct comparison, which is the regular G25 and on current prices (20c between 91 and 95) it won’t make its money back in its lifetime. Basically put, using the quoted figures of 5.5l/100 for the X20, and 6.5 for the G25 (and of course those come with a grain of salt), plus $1.73 (today's price) for 91 petrol, and $1.93 for 95, then for every 1,000km driven, the X20 costs $106.15 to fuel, and the G25 costs $112.45 - a difference of $6.30. That means that in order to make back $3,000, you need to drive 476,190km. Even if the economy difference is, say, double what the figures estimate, then it's still not worth it.
