I had the same exact washer and dryer set up for 15 years , My washer and dryer however had the LCD screen touchpad on the washer in the dryer. I replaced everything in the dryer at least three times, Everything in the war sure at least twice . The last thing to go on the washer was the main bearing in the drum of the actual washer, They used to not make the actual bearing you would have to replace the whole drawer which was $879 . Nowadays you can buy the actual bearing without buying the whole Drum and it's only like 30 or $40 . We finally threw away the outdated technology and bought a matching Samsung front loader .Black stainless steel . Because of the downturn in the economy I was able to pick up the washer and the dryer for less than I paid for the actual washer Maytag Neptune 15 years ago. I am so grateful that we actually bought a new washer and dryer The washing machine is it got the 5.0 and it so it's able to Wash more close than the old one . And it actually washes the clothes better than the old washer did even when it was brand-new . The Samsung that I bought her is the top-of-the-line Samsung washer and dryer set we couldn't be happier and we're grateful and glad that we actually bought the new set . Jeff & Deanna.

Sounds like you guys did it right. I got this bearing set off Amazon for around 20 to 30 dollars. We are watching the pennies. It does seem like it is a disposable world anymore and it is almost not worth fixing some things these days. This old washer has been washing cloths faithfully for about 15 years washing on an average of two to three loads a day. I was impressed because it doesn't seem like things last. I hear LG and Samsung make pretty good appliances, glad you are happy with yours, thanks!

I think I'll just take my laundry down to the ole stream and beat em on a rock like I always do instead of bothering with these new fangled gadgets, just kidding, I don't have any clothes to wash, but seriously, I wish I had my grandmothers old Maytag with the wringer, I used to be fascinated when she would feed the clothes through, I loved watching the items come out all flat, my mother wanted to get her an automatic machine but she didn't want it. My sister still has the Maytag she got when she got married in1971, she never wanted a new one, thats when they were made to last, it also made it through many moves from the east coast to Colorado to New Mexico back to NJ again then back to Colorado and finally to where it is today, that machine traveled more than most people do, I wonder if Maytag would give it special award when it reaches 50 years old like they do with cars when they reach a million miles.

Right across from the electric set up, we have a full off grid set up too and have a video showing it though I still have yet to do a video showing me using it. I was using it daily after Patrick built it until I got flooded with skirt orders. KZread alone is a full time job, then my chores (garden and house) are another full time job, and keeping up on my orders is yet another full time job. So though I still hang the clothes to dry, using the electric washing machine on our solar power helps me to be able to get all this accomplished, other wise one of my jobs would have to go and since youtube is pretty low wages, it would have to be the first. Here is the video if you ant to see our other set up, it is pretty nice and I love it, I hope to have more time again some day to use it regularly again: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c3yDx9GiericqKg.html

"Engineered obsolescence" is the new normality for today's products. Companies back in the day were in competition to establish a product to last for gaining popularity, integrity and longevity in order to build their business and reputation for quality. Although technological advancements have surpassed days of yesteryear the fact is evident that things are not built to last these days. Thanks Peter for that story.

How did you reinstall the bearings? Did you tap them in or use your make-shift tools? Also, was there a bearing separator between the bearings? I think that may be just for the installation process of the bearings.

Yep. It is a throw away world. But if it does wear out... Don't take to the dump. If drum is metal it will make a great burn can or way to rinse off leaves or even muddy clothes outside with all that rain y'all get in your country there. Lol. If you put the dryer in hen area with door off it'd make a nice little broody area. The door could be used as a little half door sized gate. Or use dryer without drum as a storage area. Take off door and maybe an extra dog area for when raining. Anyways... Sorry for rambling just brainstorming/MacGyvering. Lolol

I'm sure they make a pull/install tool for that design machine. I JUST did the tub shaft and bearings/seal in a top load Kenmore 110.28102310 700 series machine we bought in 2014. I bought a complete Chinese bearing and tool kit for 120 that had everything included. Unfortunately I couldn't get the seal completely seated to the plastic outer tub everything install in just like yours except upright. it leaked slightly immediately so I ordered a Whirlpool shaft and bearing OEM kit and redid it completely a month later as it also destroyed the new bearings that fast. I THINK I may have got the spacer tube and bearing ring for the bottom bearing out of alignment which made the shaft and seal metal wear sleeve not line up properly which led to a damaged and leaking rubber seal. When I redid it I was extra careful to make sure the bearings were seated all the way in their bores properly and the spacer and ring on the shaft were not sideways. The bearing tool worked great for seating them safely and easily and it included a stout round metal long bar to knock out the old bearings. With all that in place I slid the rubber seal down the shaft and pushed it easily mostly in place by hand this time and they had a 3 inch PVC pipe to use to full seat the seal flush with the tub, which this time it did. The only bad thing that happened was I cracked the outer tub this time when the whole shaft flew out and nosed into it when it fell. I fixed that with two layers of high heat automotive black silicon and now it's finally quite and nothing leaks. SO, get the proper bearing install tools for the type of washer your working on, maker sure you don't allow the shaft to fly out and damage the tub of whatever your working on, and make sure everything goes back the way it came out and everything is seated and flush or you'll have leaks right away and have to redo it. The Chinese bearing install tool I got can be bought separately for around 25 bucks on eBay and is about a 60 dollar tool through Whirlpool for basically the exact same tool and I'm sure they make one for your machine as well.

@@RainCountryHomestead I watched it because I thought maybe it was one of my machine but it was obvious he knows what he's doing and got everything right including having help when needed to make sure everything was where it needed to be and help hold and move things. I mostly threw that out there for the folks that haven't done things like this before and when someone who knows how to do this stuff shows how it looks so easy they might not know to be careful how things go and whatch out for things that can go sideways like dropping that shaft into my plastic outer tub cracking it. If I'd had a helper or thought to pad the bottom of the tub it wouldn't have happened. The bearings in many of the the newer HE machines tend to fail early so you buy a new one, pay someone a lot of money to do it, or do it yourself. I also repair everything we own that I'm able to and save a lot of money doing so. Congrats that it's still doing well so he obviously got it right and the parts were good quality. Keep posting, it really helps people and he explains everything well.

I would say inspect the belt for small cracks. I replaced mine because I had it tore apart but the belt looked fine and it had never been replaced. The bearings were made for the tension exerted so if the bearings are going to go it is time to replace them anyway. If you decide to replace the old belt the new one will seem tighter than the old one due to age and stretching of the old belt. If the old belt looks good and you're not having trouble use it up if you want and save a little. I don't think you can harm anything if a belt breaks, it's just inconvenient. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

@@dennisfucci3402 Although I have never changed out a plug on one of these you got me curious. I'm not sure how far into the project you are and I will assume you have a machine similar to mine. First I unplugged the appliance. Working from the back side, I removed the galvanized 24.75" by 3.25" plate on the back side of the control panel topside of the machine. There were 7 screws removed with a 1/4" driver or #2 Phillips driver. With the galvanized panel removed you can now remove the plastic control panel by gently working back the panel toward yourself as you are at the rear of the washer. What holds the control panel to the top of the washer are plastic hooks. After you loose the panel from the machine rest it on the top of the machine. Now you have access to where the chord pigtail or connector plugs into what looks like a relay or transformer or switch or combination of the three. Mine has a part number F 11.126/751-8Y2. On the inlet to this device is a green plug and the power in. I found it easier to unplug the bottom green plug first then the power plug second. The green plug has a catch you have to depress to remove and the power plug or adapter has small teeth on the inside which make it a little more difficult to remove. I stretched mine a little to remove it. What might be an option, which I haven't tried, is to insert a flat piece of metal (like a flat feeler gauge) on the top and bottom of the plug and receptacle to remove one from the other. Hope this helps!

I bet you could buy a bearing puller kit from Harbor Freight for something like $15, but your way is more fun. Wondering how you diagnosed that you needed new bearings? Was it screaming? Our is loud like a jet plane when it is on the high speed spin cycle toward the end...but I think that's normal?

My 17yo Neptune 5500 quit working today. With the cost of parts and a repairman, I'm wondering if I should just buy a new washer.

Suppose it depends on what exactly is wrong but yeah, if you have to hire a repairman, then it would likely be worth just buying a new one

@@RainCountryHomestead I decided to take a look at things myself this morning. I found the "troubleshooting guide" when I took off the back panel. I kept trying things I thought might be the problem and finally on the 4thor 5th try I got it working. "Clearing Diagnostic Code List" was the one.

Mine turns on, but won't start. It will randomly work from time to time, but overall I have no clue what's going on. Only code I get is the DO code for open door... when the door is open. Anyone know the troubleshooting keys?

I am guessing it could be an issue with the computer itself. I will try to remember to tell Patrick to take a look at your comment.

I do not remember what LO means but DO means Door Open. If you can get ahold of that little yellow plastic tube that should be inside where you put the detergent, you should be able to open the door by pulling on that. Until Patrick took this apart, we had no idea it was there because it was not sticking into that section as it should have been

This is Heidi but my guess is you may need a new boot, Patrick has had to replace that before. It is the grey rubber seal just inside the door. on the machine side (not on the door itself).

Patrick agrees with me on that. We don't have a video showing how to do that but there are others out there that do, we watched theirs to learn how to change ours. It can be a bit complicated taking it apart but some of that can be seen here as well

Hello. How do I clear the error code od on a front load Maytag Neptune washer ? I have done it before but now I cannot remember how I did it. I have opened and closed the door 5 times. I hear the reset sound but it stayed on. At one point I pushed a few buttons andnow I have a OO code. She has been good to me for a lot of years and I hate replace her just yet. Please help me. I replaced the control panel by the way so I guess it may be the button panel itseld which are is longer availble

I will try to remember to tell Patrick about your question. I am not sure if he will remember that himself or if he even had to do that. We did finally have to replace this old washer just a couple of months ago. Hated doing that as it had been such a good machine for so many years

You may not know this but a trouble shooting guide and schematic is located inside the control panel. If I recall there are two 1/4” hex nuts retainers and carefully roll the plastic control housing toward the front of the machine. The paperwork will be in there. Have you tried to unplug it for 5 minutes? If you still have the code try pressing “heavy soil” and “presoak” at the same time for the seconds.

Sometimes we do not think to start shooting videos until we are in the middle of a project. Funny enough, many still seemed to find this video from several years ago quite helpful
