Mayhew Shake n' Break Pneumatic Bolt Breaker

Ойын-сауық

I've been meaning to get one of these for ages and came across one while browsing Amazon. I went with the 3/8" drive version but it's available in 1/2" drive also. It works by using your air hammer to provide vibration to free rusted ad corroded fasteners.

It is intentional by the manufacturer to NOT have a ball to hold the socket on. Bolt breakers work best when there is play and movement of the socket on the bolt breaker tool. Otherwise, you would be restricting the tool's vibrations, which would be counter-productive.

You may not be a Theologean but with that tool you are now a Hammerite! Nice tool. You demonstrated perfectly how to use them too, Bruce. Let the hammer do the walking, slight pressure on your wrench. In aviation that is called an "old man" screw knocker. Not sure why.

They are a great tool, there are other companies that make them with detent balls as I have a long and a short 3/8" but no names on them. Just use tape on your socket to hold it on. The other part is to not use a super strong air hammer for anything but breaking the fastener free from the rust. You stand the chance of driving your bolts in and damaging the threads, especially on softer grade bolts. Great tool

Yes, I've used to a fair amount since this video and love it. I ended up using my drill press as a makeshift lathe and cut a grove so I could use a hog ring to retain the socket. Works perfectly. Thanks for the tips, much appreciated

@@BruceLyeg I looked at mine the other day and that was exactly the fix I was going to do. Take the cutoff saw and make an oring groove just like an impact driver. I picked up other ones that have detent balls. Got a little carried away with a powerful impact and started to mushroom the bolt threads, so now a lot more careful to just use it for the intended use of breaking the bolts free with a smaller (less powerful) impact. Fantastic tools, beats trying to remember which way to twist the manul impact driver head.

So answer me this.......On a hex bolt your are hammering on the washer or the component the bolt is threaded into. Correct? So How does this work in this scenario? The Wivco bit shake and bake works directly on the philips/torx/etc. screw. So how does this work on the typical hex bolt? What am I missing?

Thank you for posting this video a terrific review. IMHO the manufacture should have installed socket tool Ball Detents so you wouldn't have the problem with the sockets coming off. Just look at all of your ratchet extensions they all have socket Ball Detents with the ball bearing. If I brought this tool I would have to take it to a machine shop and have them install the ball dents.

@@BruceLyeg I'm hanging in there amigo, dodging the Bat stew flu so far. Hope all is well with you and yours. Here's another late night story for 'ya. My teen aged daughter (at the time) was having trouble with trigonometry and asked me to help her out. Now, I never passed algebra despite taking it four times (twice in summer school) so I was not the one to assist in this case. However, I told her to ask her Uncle Paul because he knew all sorts of math and I'm pretty sure he knows how to use an abacus, slide rule and mainframe computers as he was an electronics engineer. The tutoring was going just swell and my daughter actually passed the course with an A-. One Sunday after having a nice dinner and enjoying the family get -together Uncle Paul (did I mention he was my ex's brother not mine?) brings up why wasn't I helping my daughter? So I said "I don't know anything about the subject and anyway the only jerks that use that type of math are rocket scientists and she'll never use it in real life, normal people don't ever use it". Paul took offense and said "I use it everyday at work". And then I remembered where and what Paul did. He worked for Raytheon designing circuit boards for missiles. A genuine Rocket Scientist. Yeah, I poured myself another two fingers of Stoly, downed it and blamed it for my red face.
