Scotty had a Hot Licks video (or some such lesson video) out many years ago. Just one of his many amazing techniques was, he would play double stop solos with the pick hitting the lower string and the tip of his index finger that was holding the pick would simultaneously strike the next string above it. All clean as a whistle!! I love Danny Gatton as much as anybody but it would be hard to make the case he could play any better than that! Mind blowing!!

I've been listening to Scotty Anderson for years and wondering when someone like you might take a look. He is simply amazing and his solos are harmonically rich...incorporating some very quirky techniques that I've not seen anyone else use. For me, he is a fascinating as Matteo Mancuso! Michael...Scotty has some instructional videos where he demonstrates, slowly, his harmonized picking technique which you are calling hybrid picking. While he does play individual lines with his thumb pick he does sometime fall back on his rather unique harmonized picking where he is play two strings simultaneously with his thumb pick and 1st finger. It's hard to see on that video, but on other clearer videos you can see what he is doing....although it does go by VERY fast!

It may sound strange, but I saw that video and was so impressed by his skill that I decided to learn that solo note for note with my feet. Yes, it's true... I can play that exact solo, note for note and at that tempo with my feet. I'm still working on getting it down with my tongue, but that's my girlfriend's fault.

Michael - my definition of a hybrid picker is one who plays with a flat pick and supplements that with notes played using middle and ring (& possibly pinkie) fingers when the song (or solo) calls for it. I think of Scotty Anderson as a fingerpicker, using a thumbpick. When playing single note runs, he uses the thumbpick like a flat pick. For double stops and chicken picking, he’ll use the thumb and index or thumb and middle fingers. For an appropriate comparison, watch Brent Mason…although Brent sometimes plays single note runs by alternating his thumb and middle fingers rather than simply using his thumbpick as a flat pick. Thanks for the spotlight on Scotty, who was a truly extraordinary player and should be more widely renowned.

Your right - I have his Hot Licks DVD. He uses it in clawhammer style, but will also hold at so that it's being used like a flat pick, and the killer app is that when it sounds like two leads harmonised, he holds his thumb and first finger in such a way that he can pick two adjacent strings simultaneously - the thumb pick picks the lower string and the nail of his index finger picks the string above it. The man is a genius!

Fastest, cleanest? Well, first of all, "fastest" doesn't impress me much - that just equates to "he who can show off the most." But having said that, this guy is obviously at the top of his game, and anything he _is_ doing is impressive indeed. But jamming in a million notes for filler...no, out of anyone. But I kinda see what he's doing as not so much classic hybrid picking, as (fast) Travis-style picking - same as Jerry Reed did, with the non-thumb fingers kept mostly rigid and curled under. And he's actually using a thumb pick some as Reed did. I saw some random "amateur" girl (can't recall the channel) on YT the other day totally emasculate every male guitarist who ever lived with her amazingly fluid sure-enough hybrid picking on your typical D-28, right from the big stage of her kitchen. She was ho-humming and running through a medley of tunes and not even breaking a sweat. I would consider Ricky Skaggs (mostly on acoustic), or Albert Lee (mostly on electric) as two of the best (sure-enough) hybrid pickers that folks are familiar with, but there are many others who are by no means slouches. And yeah - they aren't slow when it comes to showing out.
