May seed sowing and potting on | in my garden - vegetables and flowers

I'm in the full swing of seed sowing and potting on plants now that May has arrived. Checking my monthly sowing and planting plan tells me I'm ahead on some things and behind on others so time to get to work sowing and growing. The greenhouse and garden are already bursting with vegetables and flowers so there's transplanting out to the raised beds to be done to make way for the next batch of seedlings.
There's also an update on the first Grow Along with Eli exciting tomato growing experiment.

    Love the orange tulips in the background, gorgeous colour. Been potting on my Tom's and peppers this weekend. I usually wait till they are a foot tall to plant my sun flowers out...usually too big for the slugs to kill them then. Thankfully it's now may and some things can be hardened in the green house now.

    I grow my garlic in a super rainy climate as well (Vancouver BC Canada--temperate rainforest). Mine is in a raised bed on our concrete driveway. The bed has a wooden bottom (because the drive is extremely sloped), and the bed drains really well, so maybe that's why they've fared well.

    Just thinking on the hoof here. Could you perhaps make extra drainage holes in the sleepers to increase drainage? Also perhaps a drainpipe with holes drilled in it to direct the water away could be sunk in to the bottom of the bed. Mind you, it’s probably the opposite problem when the weather finally brightens up. I’m just thinking about the ways that farmers help the drainage in fields and how that could be downscaled. Perhaps just altering the mix of compost and aeration-substances would help (bulking agent). Dunno. I’m enjoying the video so far. Just 1/3rd through though. Keep up the great work. 👍

    Hi gals! I found you through Gardener Scott's channel. A couple of questions... You mentioned a "slug ring" and said you weren't taking chances with one of the plants you were transplanting. What is a Slug Ring? I love your cute yard, and how you set up the saw horses to work on that tray! Great ideas! If you are concerned about slugs, if you have a neighbor with chickens, they love slugs! Ducks do too! The 1st video of yours I've seen! Very nice! Also, what are the plants that have the seeds that look like squash or pumpkin seeds? I forget what you called them, but I haven't heard of them before! Perhaps we call them something else here in California, USA? Thank you for sharing your garden! I had a similar idea for my son's family's raised bed. What did you use for the frames the blue stuff for making the hoops? Are those Hula Hoops? We have Squirrels here. One year, I had about 40 feet of lettuce, it was ready for harvest, but a hot day, so I decided to wait until morning, so it wouldn't be bitter or wilt easily. The next morning, I came out to the garden, and my lettuce was gone! It was cut off at the ground. On my fence was a very fat squirrel that even burped! I'm not kidding! I think she and her babies had a feast! They had beat me to picking my lettuce! There wasn't a single leaf left! I guess it was good, as she just laid on the fence, looked at me, and didn't move much at all! I was upset, but figured I had healthy Squirrels around my home. Anyhow, now I know I need to protect my lettuce, and other crops as well. With COVID-19, everyone I know pretty much has had voles, moles, rats, possums, raccoons, and other critters in our yards (& some have made their way into our homes!) We even had a couple bears one year! My icon picture is a real bear that came to visit, and decided to climb up a neighbor's pepper tree, after creating some excitement in the neighborhood! I'll have to get some videos myself going. I thought about starting a discord group, or a Zoom group perhaps down the road? Anyhow, it would be great to do a live tour, if you haven't already! I'll have to see what videos you have! Great to find some more gardeners! I need to get my garden going those year! I hope to see you on Scott's Monday live chat again. That was the 1st live of his I had caught. Looks like a great group! Take care and have a great gardening week!

    Hey Carol Hmmmm ok slug rings are hoops made of copper that you put around your plants to deter slugs. They worked amazing for me last year. Seeds were courgettes, or you call them zucchini 😀 The blue hoops in the raised beds are just plastic water pipes cut to size, it’s a pretty common way to do things here 😍

    Heya Ok so it’s not one frost date for the whole of Scotland. It all depends on your area etc but there’s a link right at the bottom of the video description that might help. But just be aware these are average… so not a definite last date. I actually keep a record of my frosts so I know last year we were actually getting frost right up till the end of May even though our average last frost date is the 18th May.

    Can you grow the likes of a gem lettuce in a pot?

  • @eliandkate

    @eliandkate

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yup… the thing to remember when you grow in containers is that they need extra attention and care. They will dry out much faster than in the ground so you need to be vigilant with watering and also feeding. The nutrients on a pot will get used up, so you may need to feed as well.
