Hi, I'm now pairing the Rekon with a 3c max maxx terra DHF up front and switching to a dissector for the rear in softer conditions.

i swiched from ikon maxx speed 2.35 to rekon 2.4 dual in the rear for my upcomeing tour - just for a little bit more protection for my transalp in Italien alps. in the front i have the Disscetor 2.4 max terra This i my summer combo. In winter i ride. Rekon 2.6 dual in the back and 2.4 Assegai in the front for Maximum grip!

For me these are really good trail tyres. 2,4WT feels both fast and grippy. But i would not go for the Maxspeed variants at all, a lot less grip than the regular ones.

The Rekon is a great rear tyre option with compound and casing options to suite any style of riding. Usable as a front but potentially not ideal for the aggressive stuff. What are you riding and where?

Love them for the back, fast and like to drift. They’re the best rear tire for us riders down in Florida IMO.

Agree, perfect for dry conditions where mud clearing is not a concern. Perfect for UK conditions.. NOT! Actually I still run the rekon in the summer

2.4 dual compound rekon works really well as a rear tyre, where corner grip is less critical. I would aftually be running this if I hadn't switched back to the Schwalbe HD on the front.

I have 29 2.25 on both tires for now. These are so fast! The front does kick up a bunch of stuff.

Appreciate the review. I have a 2.5 assegai exo+ on front and aggressor 2.5 DD rear for my aggressive riding and 2.6 forekaster exo with 2.4 ardent exo rear for standard trail/ single track. The trail combo is super fast rolling, acceleration is great out of corners, grip in corners is good and the rear breaks lose predictably. I think that’s a very capable combo for trail and moderately aggressive downhill, would be as close to a “perfect set up” as I have found, unless of course you’re getting gnarly...then the first combo is my go to

Interesting trail combo, the assegai aggressor combo is too aggressive for my riding, been trying the forekaster on the rear with a DHF up front, both EXO for UK autumn trail conditions, but not totally sold on the forekaster as a rear. Would like an all year round setup, but not sure such a thing exists for our unpredictable weather

How does the Ardent clear mud on the back? And how's the traction in softer conditions?

@@trickyrickymtb5622 ardent is not the best at clearing mud, the knobs are too closely spaced. But it performs well in most other conditions. I have heard good things about the dissector as a rear, it is a little more aggressive than the ardent but still considered fast rolling.

Thanks for posting this video. I’m currently running Rekons front and rear - 2.6” front and 2.4” rear. Pretty good combo but I’m not 100% sure on the front. Rolls so fast but I just don’t know yet how hard I can push it into corners.

Thats exactly how I felt, it never actually washed out, but I always felt on the edge if pushing hard, especially on loose over hard. An excellent trail setup in dry hard conditions, but perhaps not versatile enough for more aggressive riding.

@@downtoridemtb I run the dual compound on the rear, I can understand what ppl might want maxxterra for the grip, but it's not worth the trade off for me. MT is very draggy on the rear

@@downtoridemtb I'm alternating between the Rekon and Dissector on the rear. If you feel like you could use more traction without too much compromise to rolling speed give the dual compound Dissector a look.

@@trickyrickymtb5622 I actually just went for my first ride today with the dual compound Dissector on the rear. Felt great! Not really any slower that I could notice compared to the Max Terra Rekon.

Have you considered using a Maxxis Dissector up front to pair with the Rekon rear? The Dissector is fairly fast rolling, but has the same cornering knobs as the Assegai, and has transition knobs like its much more aggressive brother too.

I did look at it, but chose not to pull the trigger as there wasnt much info on how it performed as a front. Do you run it? What's your verdict?

Afaik the Dissector suffers from the same issue as all the other aggressive Maxxis tires (minus the Assegai, but that one is as grippy as it is sluggish), by having those large gaps between the center and the side knobs. Other than that I am sure they are still good, but if you want a predictable front then it is probably not the best choice. They sound like a great rear tire though, but it would still leave the question on what to put up in the front. Anyone tried Continental's Der Kaiser? They supposedly are grippy and fast rolling. Might look like they could suck in mud though, since the knobs are not just aggressive but also pretty tight. But they look like they could work well front and rear.

Ordered a couple of recon 24”x2.20 for my 7 y.o. shredder, look forward to seeing how much better his little bike will perform on the trail. Found a pair of there for only 53£ on eBay. Nice video 👍

How are the 24x2.2in going? I ordered 1 of them will put on my son's rear wheel, thought I'll keep the 2.1in black jack on the front, the rear black jack looses grip to easily especially as he is approaching 11 years.

@@stated10000 I guess it depends on the quality of your local trails. Here we have hard pack/ loose over hard trails most of the time, so no problem with grip. If the trails are muddy of loose rocks then you need burlier tires.

@andriimartynov83 cheers, we are only beginners, but the trail we went to is rocky and hard/loose over hard, we avoid it if recent mud, I used smart sam on my bike which seemed to struggle as I was commuting on them for 1.5years, have ordered dhr2 for rear of my bike and Rekon for rear of his bike, not sure what to upgrade to on the front, we both have narrow wheels so don't want to go bigger than 2.3in for me and bigger than 2.2in for his bike.

I'm a bit anal when it comes to mixing tyre brands, but do like the Rekon as a rear. Currently running a 2.4 with a Dissector 3c up front on my analogue bike. Emtb has more aggressive setup for British winters

I find the 2.4 measures up fairly accurately as long as you stretch it at max PSI for a day or two.

Out of curiosity, is there anything wrong with using two different tire brands (i.e. Maxxis for the front & Bontrager for the rear)?

Not at all, a lot of people do that. A lot of people are also a little anal (like me) and the idea of mixing brands doesn't sit well 😂 but in actual fact you may well get the best of both worlds doing that. Not for me tho 😇

I have been running a DHR 2 up front and a Dissector in back for the last year and love the combo. Just bought a 2.4 Rekon for the rear to see if I like it as a faster rolling option. My bike came with Forekasters front and rear and they were a great mix of grip and speed but they were the bottom of the line compound and I ended up getting a lot of flats.

I'm currently running the Rekon dual comp with a maxxterra dissector up front. Lightning quick combo for a small traction penalty when climbing

Thanks for the info, however you didn’t mention using the 3c mac terra compound on the rear, any reason why? I might be putting that compound on rear, haven’t purchased yet though

Hi, yeah that's coz I was looking for a fast rolling trail setup. I actually run the Rekon Max Terra on the back of my emtb, but I feel that the compound is a little draggy as a rear tyre for a non powered trail bike. It's all relative though, as it depends what your after and what/where you ride. The Rekon MT is still a better option in terms of rolling speed compared to something like the DHR2 in the same 3C Max Terra compound. Even then however, the DHR2 is a great rear when riding enduro or DH. It's all relative.

Hi Chris, front or rear? I think it's a great option for what your describing. I'd go for the exo+ casing for a bit more puncture protection though. Not the best in mud either

I'd probably go with Rekon exo+ or DD on the rear, with DHF/R or assegai on the front. Maybe a better option would be Forekaster on the rear if conditions get a bit muddy. Hope that helps.

Maxxis Recon Icon or CST tires?

I’m using a rekon for the front and DHF 2 for rear. I do desert loose over hard pack type riding and it seems to work well. 2.4 each.

@@trickyrickymtb5622 oh… it is indeed a weird combo. The bonus is I have no clue what I’m doing. I’m a complete noob and the trails I’m riding are intermediate level in Tucson Arizona. The rekon on the back was damn near impossible to use for climbing on loose over hard pack so I’m changing it up and hoping for the best.

@@Prosecute-fauci be careful as your skills improve and you start getting deeper on the turns, the Rekon doesn't hook up well once it starts to slide. Great if it's working for you now, but a front wash out at speed hurts!

@@Prosecute-fauci I'm from the UK, which is about as far as you can get from dry desert hardback, so I don't really feel equipped to offer a recommendation. Maybe look up some facebook groups, there will be loads of ppl more qualified than me to help with that terrain.

What about aggressor vs rekon as a rear tire?? Am running dhr front...

What did you go with? I have a Rekon rear now and am debating the Aggressor. I want more cornering grip. However, I do so much pedalling and climbing I hate to give up a quicker rolling tire

I had an Aggressor 2.3 on the rear of my Epic EVO. The grip was there but sacrificed fast rolling. The Aggressor also felt heavy and ended my ride shorter since I do a lot of pedaling. I ended up with a Rekon Race 2.35 for loose over hard and it made a world of difference.

Ed Hayes!! Am currently running DHR front and aggressor rear… love the grip and playfulness but think of you want a much faster bike you should get the rekon Don’t get me wrong aggressor it’s fast and I went for the little more grip

Just got my new Spark coming with these tyres. After first ride thats my thought that front would need a switch… feels like on the edge of grip. But then tried on my garden; new ones Vs old bike (bontrager xr2) and feel similar in „test conditions” - like no problem. Dont know, maybe its just a feeling of new bike(first time full sus)?:)

Rekon maxxterra on the front is fine for light trail and XC, but if pushing hard I would worry when leaning deep. I run these on a spare set for mile munching

Have you tried the Dissector on the front to pair with the Rekon rear?

Been running the dissector on the front for about a year, but I'm about to switch back to the DHF. The dissector is lightning quick, but starts to Drift on loose dusty/sandy stuff. That centre tread doesn't hold a line well when it gets dry n loose. It's a very strange sensation on the front. Love it in all other conditions

@@trickyrickymtb5622 I am leaning towards the Vittoria Agarro/Syerra combo to try. My bike (2019 Evil Following) that I just picked up came with 2.5DHF/2.4DHR and for a 120mm bike and having mostly flowy trails with some roots and rock gardens, it will be a bit heavy and slow and unnecessary. I’ll find out after I ride it first. And I’m sure I can get away with something even faster like a Syerra/Barzo or Rekon/Rekon Race but given the shreddy nature of the Evil I think not going too XC on the tires makes sense.

Hi, I'd go for a light weight XC setup. Maybe Rekon Race (rear) Rekon DC (front) or the Schwalbe 'racing' models racing Ray & racing Ralph. Stick to harder compounds like dual compound (DC) for road and light trail use, softer compounds will feel like heavy work. Hope that helps.

The Rekon measures small so I'd be tempted to go 2.4 depends on what/where you ride tho, its all subjective

No, I've gone to 60tpi, 120 feels nice, but is a bit fragile.

Are you always supposed to fill the tire up to the psi printed on it?

Initially yes when new, leave at max PSI overnight to allow tyre to expand to max width, then set to desired riding PSI. I run 23 front, 25 rear.

I should add that tyre pressure is a personal feeling thing, you have find what works best for you, balancing grip with rolling resistance. 23/25 is a pretty decent starting point though. Hope that helps.

Any tyre is worth making tubeless if you like how it runs. I do like the Rekon on the rear, but currently trying out the dissector. Will post a review in due course.
