It's not so much the acting, more the deeds the authors and director imagine a villain to commit. Murdering the family of the protagonist or raping his love interest, for example is a common plot device to make the villain extremely dispisable and thus the hero even more tragic and loveable.

The praetorian guard at one point were more powerful than the emperor himself, often being involved in assassination plots of the emperor. They all probably thought he was a spoiled little shit.
A great detail I noticed - at the start of the fight, Maximus obviously has his left arm pinned to his side where he got stabbed and it really limits his movement. When Maximus overpowers him and Commodus loses his sword, Maximus stops favouring that side and just goes all out. He knows he's bleeding out, but this is the opportunity he cannot miss.

My parents migrated here from Mexico and I remember my dad always wanting to buy the modern and best things while I was growing up. He purchased a 200 cd changer surround system and huge screen tv with wooden frame that probably weighed about 400 pounds and we would play this movie in the living room and hear the crowd roar on the speakers as the gladiators fought and it was the best! Being able to hear the sand being thrown, swords hitting each other and the crowd cheer on those speakers was amazing. My dad is now 67 years old and this is still his favorite movie.
One choice from Ridley Scott that I highly appreciate is how even though it was clear the whole crowd was rooting for Maximus and against Commodus, they all stay silent when Maximus actually wins. Idk why but that just allows me to feel and appreciate the satisfaction of the moment even more.

That door was Death's Door. I'm cannot really remember the full belief, but dying was as easy as stepping through a door. Maximus Orrileas's wife and child were waiting just beyond that door. Maximus's was at the point of death, and was fighting even at that point for the justice he deserved after the Emporer had his wife and child killed. Maximus was everything the Emporer was not. Loved by his wife and child, his men would follow him to death's door and beyond, skilled in both war and politics, and a servant of the people. Hell, even the Emporer's sister and nephew loved Maximus over the Emporer. Hence the fight, hence the cheating and hence the stabbing to even the field.
You know actor did a great job when he convinced everyone to hate him so much as a villain! Crowe and Phoenix delivered mesmerizing performances!
What I like is the intamcy between them as he drives the knife through his neck and you can see the momentary pity in the eyes of Maximus as he gently and tenderly lays him down. Don't care what anyone says, that small detail is what made him such a fucking savage. To truly defeat your enemy you have to know them intamately and empathise with them.

He went from flailing at Maximus in desperation and denial to clinging to him in disbelief, as he realized Maximus was the last human he’d be connected with in any way, ever again. As a kid we nicknamed Commodus “the puke” because of his behavior but as an adult we see he’s actually a victim of pride who never “measured up” and it turned him into something pitiful - only validating his insecurities. The knife in his throat by his “own hand” is a symbol of how he killed himself trying to prove it all wrong. You can see in his eyes by the time he realized how far it had all gone, the knife was already in his throat and he knew it was too late. This movie is a work of art.

@@WhoWho569I completely disagree that in this film the villain outshines the hero. Crowe had an equally difficult task here - with such a bright villain, create an equally bright hero. And he did it brilliantly. Moreover, when Phoenix as Commodus could use almost the entire palette of his acting techniques, Crowe had the task of conveying all the emotions and inner world of the hero with much less external manifestations. His character speaks and shows much less, but the viewer feels all his emotions perfectly.
I saw this in the theaters when it came out. What an inspirational movie! I still get sucked into watching it anytime it's on any movie channels, despite seeing it probably 20+ times. The cast, the crew, the cinematics, the soundtrack (I'm a huge Zimmer fan), and an epic plot. It's on my top 5 all-time movies for sure, maybe even top 3.

Part of the beauty of this movie, and others that have similarly great fight scenes, is the amount of blocks. There’s a few older Asian movies that did this very well where there were 200+ blocks and only about 3 landed blows. It creates tension and anticipation by searching for the next landed blow, and gives a sense of actual danger for the protagonist. Being able to mow down enemy after enemy is only entertaining for so long.

I always liked the idea that as he dropped his sword, Maximus was in fact dead in that moment. What follows as he finished Commodus off could be described as just his body instinctually acting on its own or God himself reached in to do the deed himself, but that Maximus was already there, walking through the door to be with his wife.
Wow when he starts to see the Elysium Fields but still manages to gather enough strength and fulfill his purpose at last, it brought tears to my eyes.

I hate to be that guy again (second time today) but Zimmer is a fraud who plagiarizes and steals from other composers. He runs a company, Remote Control Productions, in which he hires other composers to score his films (sometimes multiple per film) and then he takes all the credit under the "Hans Zimmer" label. This soundtrack was very likely to have been composed by additional composers. This specific track is great but it's ironically also plagiarizing Wagner's style and the part where the shields raise is taken heavily from Henryk Górecki´s Third Symphony
Can’t believe this movie came out on 440bc. Truly a timeless masterpiece
The classic good vs evil scheme but in the ultimate epic form. Superb acting, scripts, larger than life sets and cinematography all made this one of the best movies in history. It would be so cool if this came back to the big screen again with a live orchestra playing the soundtrack.

It wasn't just that first time either. Near the beginning of this clip Quintas tosses Maximus's sword in the dirt and makes him fetch it (probably instructed to do so). In the Director's cut there is a scene that didn't make it into the movie. Commodus has two of the Praetorians executed for not informing him that Maximus was still alive. Quintus had begged for their lives but to no avail. The Praetorians of the arena all understood that there was a measure of revenge in not handing over their swords.

Three things I noticed after more than a decade: 1. They clearly didn't understand how adrenaline can make you ignore pain. Maximum in-lore likely used it in combination with his rage to at least ignore the pain, even the slash wound he received. 2. Commodus was likely never injured before. Ever. Being slashed like that must have felt traumatizing, made him feel mortal for the first time. 3. Similar to #2, Commodus likely never "lost" a fight before. That means no one ever tried to fight him seriously, ever. This prevented him from learning basic CQC and wee the difference the moment they decide to throw hands.
The first time I ever saw this movie I was a kid, hanging out at my best friend's house. His father was blind and had a huge theater room, this was one of his favorites. I remember him lighting up with joy when this scene came on. Great movie.
Probably one of the most emotionally charged fight scenes in cinema

I never noticed that when Maximus is dying, there was a little mound of dirt "built" for him to lay his head on at the end. I read that the camera angle wouldn't capture the scene right if his head were flat on the ground. It is amazing what filmmakers do so sneakily that you don't realize it until it is pointed out.
