Maxillaria Orchids | Variabilis Haul, Tenuifolia Updates, Repotting & Care Info | Semi-Hydro

Today we are taking a look at a mini-haul from a local garden centre, where I acquired three little maxillaria variabilis. Since these needed repotting, I thought I'd try three different media- 'S-Te' (Kyodama?) , Small grade pumice and LECA for a comparison. Since my tenuifolia does excellently in Semi-hydro, I know this method is a fairly safe bet.
This repot also prompted me to repot my long-overdue tenuifolia, so we can do a semi hydro update on this one too :-)
My large tenuifolia lives under a GEMMA 50W COB light.

    Oh, they look so healthy and lovely, congrats on the find! I recently bought my first Maxillaria, it is a tenuifolia. Got it for a tenner, on the reduced shelf, but it is an absolute monster, I think i has about 40 psbulbs, simply amazing. Unfortunately, all the roots were a complete mush, I had to chop everything off to the base, or the most I could, there was old sphagnum that got really entangled and about a cm stayed on, since I was afraid I'd chop the basal psbulbs. Hoping it bounces back, cause I just love how it is, I keep it in a basket, with bark and moss mix, and spray it with water every now and again.

    The Orchid Room oh wow!! Great news! 🙌🏼👏🏼 the mother plant is bulging up at the base of some canes as well! Good to hear they’ve not skipped a beat! 😃 Variabilis behaves the same way as others here. Because of the weed growth potential, I have my variabilis in an orchitop pot with seramis & some leca, but heavy on the seramis. It’s in a L orchitop & you can’t see the pot anymore 🤦‍♀️ besides, a maiden hair fern has also decided to grow on the side of it & the same moss as you have has now taken over the outside of the pot. So, it not only had a LOT of moisture to start with, but now it’s added it’s own little environment to it ... it’s nuts!! It lives outside all year round, right next to the cymbidium - unfortunately it did sustain some hail damage on the leaves, but it’s not as bad as one of my terete vanda .

    Bonsai Akadama is from one small region in Japan called Akadama from an old volcano, that’s why only the product from that region carries the name.

    Is it the same for Kyodama also? They had Akadama for sale also, but it specified it was a softer material so I went for the S-Te/ Kyodama instead. I'm guessing it's the same nomenclature rules for all of them with regards to the region they are sourced?

    Not a stupid question! 🙂 Dead algae turns into a brown/ black sludge as it decomposes, live algae tends to be a lighter green colour, as it's alive and photosynthesising 🙂

    Hi Annabelle! Great videos, just a quick question about maxillarias, I have one of these, and my plant has a lot of pseudobulbs that are not growing at the same level near the base, they’re growing up in the air, similar to the first one you show at the beginning of the video. But they seem to need humidity which I can’t really provide, I’ve potted mine in leca so far. Can we propagate the plant from these pseudobulbs?

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    4 жыл бұрын

    Maxillaria tenuifolia and variabilis will climb, that is how they grow, but they will be sending roots down the stems. What maxillaria do you have? You aren't peeling back the bracts are you? They aren't fussy at all about humidity because the roots are protected by the stem coverings. At 04:00 I talk about the variabilis and general maxillaria growth habit. From 13:00 I show my tenuifolias and talk about the climbing.

  • @liyans1

    Nope, I only removed then on a couple of pseaudobulbs where I could see there was some rot - i think some water got trapped during watering at some point. I got my maxillaria a couple of months ago, and I’ve noticed that most of the pseudobulbs growing upwards didn’t have roots, and the ones that did have a root or two looked brown, and dried up. Makes me think my growing area isn’t as humid as they would like so perhaps I could try to propagate the floating pseudobulbs in medium to save them before they dry out? Mine is a variabilis.

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    The roots grow inside the stem and down- you won't see them until the reach the media inside the stem. Unless bracts are removed and they stop growing, you'll never see them until in the media. Mine are growing well in 30% humidity- the bracts take care of the humidity issue completely. So I think yours may have roots growing inside the stem you can't see- I show this in this video. Maybe it's some other issue that is difficult to explain without seeing the orchid- if you have instagram, pm me a pic and I'll take a look.

    U need to keep maxi tenu cool and dry in winter for the flower buds to form at this time (still strong light but around 16c degree at night and only water if the bulbs are staring to wrinkle). Otherwise the plant just keeps producing new growth instead of bloom.

    My two other tenuifoloa bloomed last year though (I have 3, only one has blooming issues), despite no winter rest, so I'll see what they do this year before making any drastic changes. If they fail to bloom this year I will rethink for next winter!

    Hi Kim! In European nurseries coco peat or similar is widely used for moisture loving orchids, most oncidium types you get here will arrive in coco peat for example. It's just what the nurseries use as standard for its water retention, probably cheaper than sphagnum moss also.

    £10 for that little Caladium? Sheesh. You can get 6 corms for $7.98 here. (OK, one of the biggest Caladium growers/hybridizers is here in Florida so...) Are you concerned that the STE kyodama is a bit small/compacted compared to other media? It seems like it would hold a lot of moisture with very little air.

  • @TheOrchidRoom

    @TheOrchidRoom

    It's very light so I think it must have lots of air pockets within, and the irregular rounded shape means there are quite alot of air pockets between each piece. We will see I guess, maxillarias love moisture so I think you could probably grow them in anything.... the fact that the coco peat it was in has moss growing on it indicates it probably was kept quite damp even within that, and coco peat is quite dense compared to the S-Te... The three media I picked go down a size with each media 😉 So as much as water retention, we are also seeing how much airation they can provide, and if this is sufficient 🙂

    @@michaelmccarthy4077 Maybe finer rooted orchids? My first instinct was to jump and say Masdevallias, but probably not with your climate 😂 Maybe in a wine cooler? I've seen a few people convert wine chillers to orchidariums for cool growers in hot climates! Or my Miltonia flavescens has the finest roots ever, I had to repot it while it was in spike 😥 Because I was getting new roots growing over the edge of the pot. So I tried some of this kyodama stuff mixed with seramis, because it basically has weed roots. My thinking being, it has such fine roots, hopefully it will still get enough air. Needless to say it hated LECA with a passion. But it has 5 spikes now, what's the betting they all blast because I repotted it 😂

    @@TheOrchidRoom I think Roger got rid of his M flavescens because it refused to flower for him. I'd like one but jeez are they expensive here. Funny you should mention a cooler. My real love is Peonies but they just slowly die here and will never flower because it can't get cold enough long enough. I have toyed with the idea of buying a beverage cooler, keeping the peonies in pots and putting the pots in the cooler for three months. I'm not sure I'm ready to spend $800 to grow peonies though.
