Grow the coconut Orchid in your home! 🥥🌴🍹- Maxillaria tenuifolia Orchid Care Tips
Today we are talking about the famous coconut Orchid and how to keep it healthy and blooming in our homes!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
Maxillaria tenuifolia is one of the most popular Orchids in cultivation, due to its wonderful coconut scent. There are a few of us who don;t really detect coconuts, but rather peach, pineapple, or a tropical blend of fruits! I's very yummy and summery nonetheless 😁
More on its habitat www.orchidspecies.com/maxillar...
Luckily this Orchid loves home conditions and also looks good as a houseplant! It still needs an airy potting mix, but don't let it get dry for too long!

I absolutely love the included information on the needs for this individual plant. If you find time to add individual needs on orchids in future videos I think everyone would be encouraged to expand their collections. Thank you for this powerful video 🎉

Hi, more care tips oriented videos from now on! ☺️
I have mine in 100% sphagnum and she does amazing !! roots grow reallllly fast and healthy and she's never dehydrated
Yes, I’m interested in a repotting video. I’v been struggling with mine for so long. I was wondering about the light and water requirements. Apparently I need to move it closer to a higher light situation. I also have to keep it out of reach of my cats, which love to chew on the leaves (just like my spider plants).
Yes, repotting video!! I love watching those types of videos just as much as your other ones :D
This is one of my favorite orchids, found it at an orchid show and fell in love!
Great video Danny! 💕 This is such great timing because I'm in search for some new houseplants. She's beautiful and I love the climbing habit they seem to have. Thank you so much for sharing with us! Have a beautiful day 🍃🌻
Wonderful video yet again! Ever since your “bud or spike” video, I’ve been inspecting my maxillaria tenuifolia with a much better understanding. Joey is adorable 😍
Thank you for this video as the Maxillaria tenuifolia is for sure one I really want in my collection. Love the birds and your grow room.
Another great video, thank you! It’s a treat to see a different part of your growing space, and Joey’s cameo was adorable. I have two of these that are well rooted but neither has bloomed yet, so I’m feeling frustrated. One is under bright LEDs and the other in a southern window (an experiment to see which it likes best).
Just purchased the yellow version of this a few weeks ago! Perfect timing!! Mine smells like artificial coconut like a hand soap or a candy version of coconut.
Thank you for posting this!! I am expecting my first one tomorrow and it’s bare-rooted. Just needed some information on how to tend to it. Love all of your tutorials.
I got 2 coconut orchids a few months ago. They’re doing well❣️I can’t wait for spring. Thanks for all the tips and great info❣️
Beautiful orchid! Thank you for your vid 😊 the AoA has a cool webinar now that travels to the Andes in Peru and they show a lot of maxillary tenufolia in situ. It really takes your breath away. You probably have seen it ❤ it's truly amazing !
A very informative video and beautiful plants ..👍 . oh and big like from my Channel ..
yes ! I would like to see the repot !
I got everything right except the watering - I got a little lazy during summer. The information you provided in this video is extremely helpful and I would love to see a re-pot in future. Thank you for the great content, and so happy to see Joey too 🕊💗
Always a pleasure to watch! I love mine, my old pseudobulbs have some black marking, not progressing hope its ok! Love to learn about other types of Maxallarias and yes to the repotting video!
Yes! Please do a repotting video with this orchid
Very nice bird and Coconut Orchid. Super informative video.
Bought / received a rather young one today with one adorable flower in bloom in the centre of the bulbs and many new growths ready to make their appearance soon. Can’t wait to see how she does in my home. The smell is so pleasant from just one small bloom. imagine full bloom, oh I’m excited!
Definitely hope you do a repotting video for Maxillaria... thanks!
Yes please, a video on repotting!
Yup would like to watch a video on repotting this orchid
Delivered! Thanks
Beautiful flower
Someone gave me one out of the blue two days ago so this video has perfect timing!
Yes. Repotting info. For example how big to go to the next pot size. Thanks!❤
Repotting vid! Yes!
Mine hasn't again bloomed for me but watching this I figure she might has it to dry, despite the high humidity in our home. So thank you so much for this tip, I will add some sphagnum to her mix
Thank for information
Yes, a video on repotting would be appreciated. I have one that loves water.
Yes. I would love to see repotting of this orchid
I just got this orchid in bloom and it smells like sandalwood to me. Like the actual wood itself. It’s amazing!
Love you the video, I just got my first, needed repotting, need a o see the video
Thanks so much! I found your channel a few weeks ago, and you are so helpful, and fun to watch as well. I just purchased a coconut orchid from ebay, and an excited to get it. Thanks again!

I’m Glad, you did this video! It’s the next orchid, I planned to purchase! I wasn’t sure if it’ll be happy, in my apt! Now, I’m sure; it Will Be! 😊 B/c of your videos, I’m a Better orchid mother! 🤗
I enjoy ur all video. ❤️❤️❤️
Always interested in a repot video
Thank you for sharing have a nice day hope see you soon like coconut orchids
Very good video. I have a Max. tentifolia and she’s growing well but not blooming so I need to give more light. Thank you for sharing the information.
Thank you so much for this video my Max is producing new growths but no flowers so I have now moved it to a warmer room with more light following your advice fingers crossed🤞
Thanks so very much, I have had one for about three years no bloom but I think the light was incorrect. I will now adjust both light and watering and see. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this Danny, I just bought one, so perfect timing for me to avoid sure disaster! :)

OMGosh, just noticed my Maxillaria had formed a spike and bloomed from underneath the bark 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Watching this I started thinking about my house and where I could put this...
These are very temperature tolerant plants Dannie. I grow mine outdoors year round in coastal southern California and they show no signs of stress with our average lows of 9 c and highs around 16 in the winter. It can tolerate the rare days it gets down to 5 c in winter and summers as warm as 35 and up.
난꽃 영상 너무 잘보고 갑니다 😃👍👍💕💕💕
Maple syrup scent when finishing up. Definitely smelled coconut during the early bloom stages
Mine is a large plant. Have it in a hanging basket lined with coconut coir. The orchid is growing in a mix of orchid bark, charcoal, perlite and lava. It looks lovely as a mature plant potted in this manner. (I'm growing outdoors in s.e. Florida, USA.)
Lord this is posted at the perfect time, mine just got here about 5 minutes ago lol.
Thank you
I think mine smells like honey suckles but i do smell coconut also. She is my favorite orchid by far!! So beautiful year round. She catches everyone’s eye.
Added to my shopping list 😅
Yes, please, show the replanting of this orchid. Thank you.
Thank you so much! 🤩 I’m going to apply your tips to mine (which hasn’t bloomed in like 3 years) and hope it’ll reward me with some beautiful flowers 🥰

@@jen1778 Hi Jen, yes I actually had 3 flowers which lasted pretty long. I was so happy and excited when I saw the buds 😍 Now the orchid is not doing anything but I’m fine with that. She deserves a little break as she recompensed me with some flowers 😁 So for me the tips worked out very well!
Thank you! Your Maxillaria tenuifolia looks better than mine. Mine must be too dry. I am adjusting its watering schedule.
Would love to see a repot video when the flowers are gone

Thank you for this video! I just received this orchid for Mother’s Day and I’m a beginner who’s only dealt with phals. I’d love any and all future videos of this orchid. I will try to repot when the blooms die so I am trying to decide how. It is currently in a mesh basket and moss.

Also, I just noticed one bulb with two flowers 😱
I was gifted one of these beautiful orchids earlier this year and I just love it! Mine is mounted on a board with the roots wrapped in moss. It put out a ton a new aerial roots in the spring, but as we got in to summer I noticed that the roots seemed to dry up. I live in Houston, TX, and it's 35-37 degrees C most days in the summer. Do I need to re-mount this plant and wrap the new roots up each year?
Thank you for this video - it is very helpful. If you could do one on repotting, that would be very helpful too. Thank you again.

Tnq,
This is a quote from the American Orchid Society page: The paramount quality of the media is that it does not stay consistently wet so sphagnum may be the least suitable choice. I realize that orchid needs probably vary according to where you live, but it’s amazing how often I encounter polar opposite advice about the same varieties.
Hi! Totally unrelated to this video but i was wondering what will happen to a phal if i dont remove the basal keiki. Both the mom and keiki are pretty healthy, thats why i was wondering if i can leave the keiki on. Ps this maxillaria tenuifolia is definitely gonna be on my orchid wishlist. thanks for all the helpful tips about orchids!!
Repotting video would be great. I just purchased a good sized variegated form but it’s in a slatted hanging basket. I won’t be able to keep it moist enough!
I have one that I have grown for 4 yrs from a seedling to big 6 in pot full and have never had one bloom. I have tried different locations and keeping it outside during summer.
omg I so want one of these! they sound so awesome. not sure where I'd find one though (maybe Collectors' Corner or Mount Beenak Orchids?), and not sure I have enough room in my tiny and ever-so-slightly overcrowded grow space though...🥴
@KnowYourOrchidsWithLogan

No collaboration or anything like that with Collectors' Corner or Mount Beenak Orchids by the way.
I recently saw some maxillaria variabilis orchids with red fruits? I guess they weren't seed pods, but was wondering what part of an orchid this is? Thanks if you're able to answer!
I have one I keep outdoors during the warm months. Unfortunately, critters like to munch on the pseudo bulbs.
Thank you so much. My babies leaves were turning yellow and with watching this video I found out she was not getting enough airflow. I watered her and put her back into her decorative pot. She might have been asking for air?
I have one of these orchids, it looks like it’s having a bad hair day it’s pretty big, my question is how do you trim it down ?
The amount of water needed by Max.ten. is very dependent on the ambient temperature and the amount of light. I live in a temperate area and my neighbor has many Max t. outside (min temp 7 C, 45 F in winter) on mount. The orchid does fine but must dry before watering. In fact, keeping them wet kills them. So, keeping this plant wet is specific to this specific growing condition.
Such a cute orchid! To me they smell like pina colada.
I have received a pseudobuld...is there a way to promote roots growing? Just sphangum moss and water?
One of the aerial roots is mushy.. Should I cut it?
I have a maxillaria orchid … the bulbs are much smaller than what I see in your video… this is the second year I’ve had it but no flowers yet… it looks healthy … any suggestions? Thank you Mary
Mine have wrinkled Phseudo bulbs not all but some is this the sign of lack of watering
I just purchased this, its in a compact container, not sure what medium is used, looks like spagnum moss. Water gets collected and drainage is slow. Should i transplant to a bigger pot and add bark and charcoal?
Thanks! You encouraged me to try this one, so I just placed an order...it's being shipped to the 40°C+ desert in Arizona.

I am in AZ too. Think I will order one as well.
What does it mean when some of the leaves are pale green or have a small amount of yellowing on the tip? I have had mine for 2 years and still has not flowered.
Hi Danny, Thank you so much for this video. I have had my tenuifolia for over a year. Though it is a mature plant, it has sadly never produced blooms for me . But it has produced lots of new pseudobulbs. It gets plenty of light and seems to be very healthy overall. Is there something that triggers blooming?

Thanks for doing a video on this orchid. I bought one on Etsy bare root and only 5 bulbs. It seems to be stressed a bit and hoping it will bounce back. I hope I am successful!!! Please do a video when u repot. Would this orchid be the same as a Phal as not to get water on the plant itself?

Hi, not really, it doesn't have a crown so it doesn't have the same weaknesses ☺️
I just bought one. It is mounted on wood. Is this okay? From a huge orchid grower.
Hi Danni ,I always watch your video, very informative on growing orchids, my question is where I can buy these coconut orchids, can I buy that on line ,and can you suggest a site? Thank you.

Hi, yes you can find them at orchid nurseries. They will vary depending on your location, they typically don't send to other teritories, so a google search in your area is the best option ☺️
Bonjour j’ai une maxillaire est j’aimerais la remporter quelle substrat utilisé merci est j’ai un sabot de venus qui a pratiquement plus de racine que faire merci
Yes. I would love a reporting video. I have not reported mine from a hanging basket how the nursery sent it to me. I do have a question about watering though. I place my basket in a bowl for about 20 minutes. Is there a better way or is that what is recommended? Also, the tips of my leaves were brown when I received it. Is that a problem?
@MissOrchidGirl
4 жыл бұрын
Hi, soaking is great if the orchid dries within a few days. About the brown leaves, not sure, it can be caused by many things from sun burn to dehydration. It's important to observe what happens from now on ☺️
Its also called pinakolada orchid....
What is a semi dry winter rest? Water sparingly during colder months? Roughly, let it dry out completely before watering again?
@MissOrchidGirl
4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I suppose it just refers to a decreased watering schedule, but it's more important to observe the orchid's reaction, than anything else ☺️
PLEASE help!! I inherited this orchid. The lady that gave it to me, her husband had passed away and she had no idea how to care for it. It is about 2 1/2' in diameter (so huge!) She thinks it's about 12 years old. All of it's psuedo bulbs are wrinkled. I'm so worried it's going to die. Any tips, to bring it back to health? Thank you for all the tips in this video!!
