Given that she was pretty depressed in this episode, her literally snapping out of her trauma just to mess with Dustin is perfectly in character Edit: to all the people saying you don’t snap out of trauma, I was barely aware of what it was then. Lucas likes basketball and got the opportunity to be on the schools team, Max let her demons get ahold of her and became isolated, her mother drinking didn't help, Will moved away, mike and Dustin stuck together, Lucas somewhat did, he is a member of hellfire after all.

To be fair they've always broken the party up into smaller groups; Season 2 saw Mike off with Will and Joyce for most of the action, while Dustin was with Steve and Lucas was with Max, while season 3 for a time had Mike, Will and Lucas as one group, El and Max as another, and the the Scoop Troop. Even season 1 split the party for a time, with Lucas and El going off separately.

I miss how stranger things actually used to be a horror show like the actual scary scenes, but now it's just action

this is one of this only times max was happy/smiling in s4. and it was around ✨dustin✨ because no matter how sad you are, dustin can always make you SMILE 😌
