MAX - Rescued "Pet" Bobcat

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Max the bobcat kitten was at the center of a months-long legal battle that touched off after a Rhode Island vet seized him from someone who bought him from a backyard breeder... It is illegal to have bobcats as pets in Rhode Island. The cat's owner went to court to get the cat back, but the state won. Now Max will live at Big Cat Rescue for the rest of his life!
We're so glad we could step in and offer Max a permanent home, if you want to help put an end to the trade in wild animals as so called "pets" please visit this site to help give them a voice: Subscribe to our Website: bigcatrescue.org

It totally goes against the very American ideals and premise of freedom and liberty over all else = innocent until proven guilty (which is no longer the case). We are not "free" and we are not "brave". If we were, then we would have a new government by consent of the people, because of the people (which I'm amazed that after the recession we didn't accomplish that goal or even attempt it). At the very least, we would have term limits, a ban on lobbying/ campaign contributions, and the Federal Reserve System, IRS, and Federal Income Tax would all be abolished (since they are all illegal and unconstitutional).

He/she was free to wander for miles if it wanted or even stare off the eagle peak. ^_^

And I would agree with you. The problem is with the new legislation that has been put in place responsible owners are being punished too. Look at the case of Benji the Bobcat there were dozens of videos of him and the man owned him legally with all the proper permits but after the big cat incident they said he couldn't have them anymore even though we had all the property the right enclosures and everything and then she went to a state funded rescue. Benji died after two weeks of being in the rescue from what is basically a broken heart. Look up Benji the Bobcat on KZread and look at the KZread vedio and basically if you find the right one the daily blog he talks about how Benji died. When she was a rescue he suffered a seizure as a cub and could never be released to the wild. As I said in another posting the laws are just too black and white and have a habit of not taking the situation into consideration. And it is very sad when a good owner gets punished because of some moron or some stupid liberal says no you can't have that pet even though you do everything right and perfect the government can still take your pet away. It's ridiculous somebody tried to take Bob from me they complained that I had a wild animal even though he was domestically bred from a licensed breeder not a backyard breeder and I had all my paperwork in order, because somebody complained I actually had to go to court and fight for my right to have Bob. It's ridiculous how some people think they have the right to tell you how you have to live your life.

I have a Van Kedisi. They are not a breed, but a naturally occurring species from Lake Van in Turkey, either with blue eyes, or eyes of 2 diff colors. Mine has blue eyes. It's like all the good of owning a wild cat but none of the bad. They have short hair and long hair, and mixes of both. A bad guy from a James Bond movie had a Van cat. They are really chill. Mostly because even in their wild state they are still partially domesticated.

Wrong. What does she mean "Thankfully..they did win custody of Max.." This animal was ripped away from it's owner who obviously was taking good care of it by taking it for it's rabies shots. The Vet should be ashamed of themselves for doing this..instead of trying to find a better solution. In other states it's legal to own a Bobcat as a pet. So RI is behind on the times and there is a former Bobcat owner now with a broken heart.

I would rather ride with this bobcat than with some of the people I have had to ride with. On another issue, if you want a bobcat as a pet, there are several breeds of domestic cat that resemble a bobcat that you may want to get instead. The Maine Coon is one.

Actually, the origin of the Maine Coon Cat is reported to be a cross-breed between a bobcat and a standard tabby. If so, then in fact you have a 50% bobcat, and Big Cat Rescue thinks you aren't responsible enough to own a bobcat, so GIVE IT UP NOW! This is what they are saying, even though they'll swear its not. Make a case for banning the Maine Coon Cat breed, and public outcry would have politicians wanting to make a 70% or less exception to their law tomorrow. This means the law is based on nothing but PERSONAL OPINION. See how quickly this all breaks down? Laws are rules based on mob mentality.

We have a Maine Coon cat! He is very gentle. When we got him, we really needed him! Before we got him, more than ten years ago, we had four female cats, no males. They were all arguing over who would be the "alpha male," which is difficult for females. They had all been spade, of course, but they were really grouchy and confused about the pecking order. Alpha-female, I guess. When we got our Maine Coon, he was just a kitten, but was already as big as a normal cat. We dropped him in on the females (after keeping him separate in the bathroom for a couple of days). The females instantly bowed to him, and he became, de facto, the alpha male. But he was just a kitten - he didn't care. It didn't mean a thing to him! He just wanted to play! It's more than a decade later, and he still wants to play - he is very laid back!

Just don’t buy from a breeder period, there is an abundance of cats in the world. We don’t need more, just more cats getting killed and abused due to overpopulation and over crowding at shelters. A regular American short / long hair should be enough.

I hope that the owner who apparently had a relationship with Max, is allowed visits. It sounds as though he was a responsible caretaker for his companion, and I'm not entirely comfortable with the fact he was separated from Max. Other states allow bobs as pets. That said, it's preferable that raising bobs in captivity be phased out.

Thank you for caring. We wish they could live wild and free. We did not make them captive. However, as sad as it is once a cat has been born and raised in captivity there simply is not a good / safe way to release it into the wild. We do our best to give them a life as close to wild as we can. When a wild born bobcat is injured we treat it, rehab it and release it. YOU can help prevent more from being born for a life in cages at BigCatBan. com.

A person may be a good owner with the best of intentions, but, the fact that he bought the bobcat kitten from a backyard breeder means that he is perpetuating the problem of wild cats living in cages. The potential owner is also supporting the torture of the mothers who are over bred and are usually kept in horrific conditions. It's the same reason why it is wrong to buy from puppy mills.

i already addressed this in another comment, and yes i am fully aware and have studied up on the history of a few domestic animals as well as some legal uncommon ones - why assume i'm an idiot? we all started domestication from somewhere. the real point here is not the issue of domestication but the welfare of the cat before compared to how it is now

Alberto, people like this assume everyone is an idiot if that person disagrees with them. Just like they assume everyone else will abuse an animal. They have the attitude "this is what people do", and then they tell a horror story. But of course they are the one person that's different, because they love animals. Therefore they deserve all the animals and need the right to take everyone else's animals away.

Okay, I have a Bobcat that lives with me (I have a federal permit to have her). Yes, Ziberteck, the Vet "stole some guys cat" BCR now has the Cat. Remember, BCR was not the one that "stole" the cat in the first place. As I tend to agree with BRC's ideology on wild animals should be left in the wild; I'm for ownership. I say I tend to agree, b/c most all exotic animal owners are incompetent. However, my animal came from the very "backyard breeder" that Max came from. I understand that BRC does not promote exotic animal breeders...but to call her a "backyard breeder" is in poor taste (she is FULL legal to breed and sell bobcats). BRC is a great organization...But they (my opinion) should not have an "us against private ownership mentality. People like me worked hard and payed a lot of money to have a legal, healthy, happy cat.

My pet skunk falls into that 'wild, not pet' category that Big Cat Rescue tends to not trust 'average people' with. Then again, he's descented, has his shots (including the one for rabies that NO ONE will certify for skunks, but it works just as good on them as it does dogs and cats), and is no different than a ferret or mouse for a pet (much friendlier, actually). The problem with pet laws, is that the laws are made by mostly fools that have no understanding of the pets they try to control. This is why everyone wants to ban Pit Bulls, it's not bad animals, its BAD PEOPLE and FOOLISH LAWS. In the 1960's, people hated Dobermans, in the '70's, they viewed Rottweilers as 'evil', in the 80's, it was the Malinois, in the 90's came the Pit Bull's time. Again, fools and their ignorant laws that aren't supported by facts.

Agreed. As long as we're not talking about animals that are like, mountain lions, bears, or endangered species in general, these laws seem like pointless wastes of time made by sanctimonious people who want to force their worldview on others. I mean, it's a freaking bobcat for crying out loud, not a damn puma. All the people droning about something like a bobcat being 'OH SO DANGEROUS" have probably never owned any pets larger or more temperamental than a beagle. There are all kinds of things that people are allowed (and in some cases, encouraged) to own as pets and livestock that are MUCH more dangerous than a bobcat. Have people really become this weak and scared of everything around them? Of course, I live in Michigan, so my strong feeling from this might come from the fact that we're not even allowed to own freaking chickens unless we're a set distance away from a city. Stupid freaking people.

Right.....don't piss him off for any reason, and be sure you keep him well fed or you might just loose those lips. Gods you idiots are the biggest part of the problem. Bobcats are not domestic cats. They are dangerous and they do not deserve to be cooped up in your house or in a cage. Actually domestic cats can be dangerous if you piss them off. I have evidence of that on my arm. I got attacked by a domestic years back, and he held me with his front claws while he proceeded to chew on me. It was my fault as I annoyed him. But he marked me good with scars that are white and show up strongly. Now think about pissing off a big cat like a bobcat. ::shivering:: No way. You shouldn't have a big cat. They are not pets.

Who's to say what can't be kept as a pet. Sure grizzleys, lions, tigers are out but what's wrong with pot belly pigs, skunks, foxes, small wildcats with good temperments, etc. If you know how to care for them. A bobcat could be happier as a pet with the right person. Raccoons are cute pets if bottled rescued babies though baby proof thoroughly. Heard of deer as pets too. If you think people can't have a bobcat then you have to eliminate extra large cats and dogs. If you got the room, know how, why not? It's okay to have a giant python, poisonous fish but not a Bobcat? Oh vey. A common lion fish will send you to the hospital if you're not carefull.

You ask why the rescued bobcat was not put back into the wild....I'm not sure about this, but I think it's because he never had the extensive training a mother bobcat would have given her young. He was not brought up in the wild, and would have no idea how to survive if he was suddenly dropped back into the woods or desert, etc. Also, by such long term close proximity to humans he has been contaminated by our behavior patterns. When hungry, instead of hunting, he would come to people for help. It's already been hard wired into him - too late to change now. He is beautiful!
