actually one: CERO. Sakurai in an interview talked about how hard it was to pass the CERO guidelines for Smash for Wii U due to Paletina and some other female character which almost delayed the game due to them requesting many times for him to alter the character sprites to be less revealing, so Im not surprised about Mai here (also note: Angel, Shermie and B Jenet arent here either) But Sakurai coulda gotten away with it if he had used Mai's second win pose (her red Kimono dress with the umbrella ) 😂

Even better, the VA for Kirby, well, she recognized immediately that they were going to put Terry; nobody told her what character Kirby was using copy ability of, she is just a fan of SNK and Fatal Fury, so she immediately went, 'Wait, is this Terry Bogard?'

Personally, "giving a shit" is underselling Smash Ultimate. Like, Pikmin was a great game that devs gave a shit about. MVC3 was a great game that devs gave a shit about. Smash Ultimate is on another level in terms of how much developers cared about the game.

The online problem is nintendos fault really Sakurai tried his best to fix the wifi issues when the game first came out but it still was bad You cant really argue about the gameplay either,yeah sure their are some mechanics that hardcore pros or a few casuals find annoying like the buffering mechanic.despite characters like little mac are trash while characters like peach are top tier in competitive scene, the game is more balanced than any other game. Honestly if the game had better netcode or wifi connection and allowed people to remove buffering or not, i think it will make the game WAAY better even though its already amazing. Hopefully something like this happens in the future as this game probably is gonna have another 2 years of support

@@shaehankhan7912 I think shitty netcode is more the fault of the people making the game instead of the company that's publishing it, I get Sakurai is a special darling to Nintendo fans but that doesn't mean he's a perfect designer that is never wrong. The honest fact is that Smash has always had shit netcode and probably will for a long time to come, not because Nintendo is stopping them but because they're not interested in investing either the time or the resources to implementing it. Hell, we can't even get traditional fighters to have consistently good netcode, let alone one that's considered to be a party game by its director.

Max: "Plays every single Kof game but 95" Sakurai: "Out of all of them, recommends specifically 95" If that isn't fate... come on Max, you have to do it now!

The Movement Navigational Mess, Pre-rendered backgrounds look melted into each other and it aged poorly and Square Enix knows that anything With FF7 related make them the cash. Why do ya think Dissidia on mobile has Cloud on it's Icon? It's to pull in the FF7 enthusiasts. (Although the Music is Fantastic) and ya know what's Rubbish? Zack Fair being Dead in Kingdom Hearts. A story not even canon to what Happens in 7 and He is still dead. Dude is the Ben Riley of FF7. Just destined to die on the Battlefield.

@@TUZOIVAN16 they never Bankrupt since 2001 but KOF XIII was a Big dissapointment so they left Consoles to focus in Pachinkos and Mobile games, in 2016 they we're bought by a Chinese company who thought SNK have Big potential, they bring back most of Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting original teams and here we are

"Sakurai loves KoF, he loves Fatal Fury. He like grew up playing these games." Sakurai was 20 when the first one came out in 1991. People forget that Sakurai is turning 50 next year.

Terry is literally the perfect example of the saying "smash fans dont deserve sakurai" he gives and gives all he has and puts so much into these characters to be as faithful to their home series as possible.Then you still have a vocal group who find ways to complain. This man and the work he does are absolute treasures. Thank you Sakurai for everything that you do.

Terry was probably the first example. Kazuya, Sora, Banjo and others also received similar treatment from Sakurai. He really went far to ensure they played as faithfully to their home games as possible, like you said.

@@helmiboboy Except that wasn't exactly true. By KoF 99, he dropped the school boy outfit for older look of the white and black jacket with blue jeans. Then in KoF XI, he gravitated even further to a black leather jacket, white shirt and blue jeans. And then in KoF Maximum Impact 2 he got....some weird ass leather jacket options and in KoF XIV, he got another white Jacket altogether again. Its Athena and Kensou who refuse to age lol

Gotta love the fact that Sakurai did his own "Terry Legacy" and did a "Boss Rage" too for good measure

For the longest time. He hated that Smash Bros Melee turned in a competive fighting game. He tried to kill the scene by slowing brawl down alot. He just wanted Smash to be a family friendly party game. While I do not care for the Smash series being apart of the FGC, simply cause of it's fans. These usually are the rudest at EVO, their champions are almost always dickheads or just rude people except Armada. The fans seems to hate guys for using a winning strategy simply cause it's not the way they play or like so that means it's bullshit. Hbox playing a defensive strategy and not just nonstop attack gets booed. Okay fine. But when he wins the tourney, be respectful and give the winner the respect he deserves. But they will boo him and refuse to give him any respect for winning majors. The community is usually toxic whenever someone says anything that isn't just blind praise for Melee. The community usually is full of people who refuse to bathe or use deodorant. And some actually use the excuse that fthey can't afford to bathe everyday? That's just stupid. Wash yourselfs, you embarrass your community and that community has a reputation as being unwashed wannabe weebs that are autistic turbo virgins. And from the majority I have met at local tourneys and a few big ones. I tend to agree that 95% of them are exactly that. Not all are bad. But that's a low number. Oh and I had a guy wanna fight me for saying a bad thing against Mango. Apparently he is a living god and cannot be insulted in anyways cause it's blasphemy

But it's obvious given how Sakurai is a fan of SNK and knows plenty of the stuff like the fact that it was on the Hyper Neo Geo 64 so it's safe to say that he has played and enjoyed Wild Ambition. No offense but you misunderstood what he said. Because it makes very little sense to say he missed playing Wild Ambition in the sense of not playing the game when it was around.

@ Yes it does. Just becauss it failed doesn't mean he never got a chance to play it. You may be a fan but some people like Sakurai have played those games despite low sales. You misunderstood, plain and simple. You thought that he regretted not playing Wild Ambition when it was the opposite: he played it and misses doing so back on the Hyper Neo Geo. 27:14 This moment is why I always come back to this video. Every time this video is recommended to me I always watch the whole thing, just to see all the love that was put here and to see Max legit have a moment where it goes beyond hype, it goes to the heart, the love that is put. It's not just making new games to get new people, it's reminding you why you love these games since childhood. It gets me every time.

Yeah, it's an excellent moment. It's really important with respect to how frequently other developers just don't care, or are willing to rip people - and fans, specifically - off. It felt good to hear then, and it still does now. It still doesn't address the game's netcode, but, aside from that, it's perfect. Soul in a game is what matters most.

Not that I haven’t. But he was so sincere when he said it. Like, yeah. Nintendo will give a fuck if it’ll mean fans will enjoy it. They had no reason to include all the songs, cameos and such from fatal fury and king of fighters. But, they know fans will scream because King and Ryo are in the background

Max over here having a deep spiritual connection with Sakurai. Soon, he will travel to Sakurai's house and beat him at Smash Bros, after which we will get Fulgore and Benny Mii Costumes.

Just fun fact , When sakurai was a young lad, He was playing King of Fighters, he unknowingly beat his opponent then realize that they were a couple who didn't know how to play the game. Therefore he came up with the idea to make smash bro, a game without health bars but with a game of chance in beating your opponent lol. So yes the dude loved KOF in his young days, so that's why we seen him put so much effort into this lol

Terry is the only character who can do a cancel. Both terry and Ryu (ken) are the only ones who use command inouts in the game to unleash an attack. No really a legit fighting game like the other popular games (mk, sf, Tekken ect) Still fun tho

I like how Sakurai is literally getting paid to make his dream game. Just seeing him add characters from games and franchises he loves, and the happiness on his face as he talks about them, you just knows he loves his job!

Modding over characters _is_ possible, but their bone data makes it impossible to change the orientation of their body frame to make them more appealing for model rigging. There's moveset mods, but those are incredibly difficult to come up with, take forever to make, and outright replace whole characters when they happen. It's just not practical.

Lets be real here, Terry's reveal trailer out of all them so far has some of the most effort put into it and it lived up to the hype.

It's the most valuable in general because of the sheer amount of characters they brought into the game via-the stage. They didn't cut any corners, those models look fresh and crispy clean and that takes a bit of work to do. Setting this single DLC pack up against all the cuts Pokemon SWSH made when they already have all the resources needed and would just have to take a bit of time to import them really shows the difference between working for passion and working for a paycheck.

@@Ninetails2000 The thing about pokémon is not just the models, it's about programming hundreds of extra characters with their own moves and stats, and testing them all in the game to make sure nothing is broken. It's not something to be compared to stage cameos.

@@BrazillianCara Didn't seem to stop them from including all 150 Pokemon in Let's Go. And since they made a big deal of stating how all of their resources have been designed to be future proof, don't you think they would be easy to import? All the work they would have to do would be upfront in developing the tools to import the Pokemon, which they obviously have done. The only real work needed would be for the new from whole cloth Galarian Pokemon. They just didn't bother with it because, to their own admission, they didn't feel like it. Contrast that with Sakurai saying point blank from the very beginning that he's happy and excited to include all the characters they have-even if it's hard work-because he knew every single character has someone who loves them and wants to see the at their best. It's like night and day.

@@vulcan422 yes, he did a good expression of Terry. Also note that this VA did the voice of Faust and Potemkin from Guilty Gear. Quite amazing if you compare the tone of each characters.

For sure Sakurai is an SNK fanboy, and SNK knows it. Imagine it, the biggest crossover of fighting game wants one of your characters in it. And the director and producer grew up playing your games. That’s gotta be such an honour to do it. And then sakurai picking out 50 songs expecting SNK to say that only these 15 will be good. To a resounding: OK! To all 50. Damn, SNK must be so proud and happy to have Terry in the game. For sure

YES so much tribute! I'm a new SNK fan for 2 years now, and seeing Terry make it in made me go harder into KOF 98 UM and KOF2002 UM. I'm not so good, but when I beat 2002 I'll have KOF XIV and SNK Heroines for dessert. Mason I hope you can get a Switch one day, Smash is so much fun for classic gaming fans (even I can do Power Geyser more consistantly) and it has a ton of NEO*GEO games. Man I hope KOF XV looks amazing and that Shermie will be in it.

I've said this with every new Smash character revealed and I'll say it again; This game shouldn't exist, but thank God it does.

Yo as someone who is newer to fighting games this really taught me a lot about the history behind some of the games I've never played or even heard of. I really respect how much love they put into this. I wish all games were created and marketed like this. To be what a game should be. Fun.

I love that Terry's in the game, I knew who he was, I just hate new mechanics like the ones shown. I liked smash because it was simple, even though it has some moves that are cancellable and stuff. But then they give Ryu/Ken light, medium, & heavy moves. And then they add original inputs that create variations of the move you otherwise can't do with just a button push and a direction. And now there's moves you have to press 3 different directions for it to come out, meaning it won't come out at all most of the time. If I wanted to deal with learning those mechanics, I'd play Street Fighter V or UMvC3. They're basically giving the finger to casuals.

He's giving the fans of these characters the real feeling of how they are used in their actual games and that's how it should be. If you didnt like fighting games with these characters in them then just don't use them. He isn't catering to you, he is catering to the people who play smash that have played these characters because **they** are the ones who will pick them up and play them because it's familiar to them. Just up tilt with mario and don't play these characters it's simple.

@@danielmaster8776 The stupid thing about all of this is Smash stans or casuals complain about traditional fighting game inputs but the general gameplay of Smash is still confusing as fuck despite it seemingly being 'simple'. So its still ends up being hard to master lol. So if you throw these traditional moves in, people will still learn and eventually master them anyway like they did with regular Smash mechanics because as long as you enjoy something enough, you will eventually be dedicated to it and then you will eventually learn and be good with them anyway. In other words: GIT GUD.

@@danielmaster8776 I respect your opinion dude, but mainly the reason i like all of the characters cause the mass majority of them has a gimick like, pokemon trainer :can switch into 3 pokemons ryu and ken :street fighter command input Cloud: Limit Joker: Arsene Hero: down B mechanic Shulk: monado arts Lucario: aura Little mac: punch And many more, plus i grew up with fighting games, like street fighter, tekken etci think Sakurai goal is to bring these characters into a fighting game but use their unique traits from their original games so i think Terry addition is great and it emphasize itself that all fighting games r different and shows that Terry isnt just some Ken knockoff, i like the idea of implimenting his style into smash, when i play him, it feels like im playing a traditional fighting game like he was design to be and forgot that im playing smash

This is one of Max's best reactions. There's just a depth of appreciation from both him and Sakurai that's truly great to behold as a long-time gamer. It was worth watching this Terry reveal again to see this.

As someone who was clueless about Terry, I really appreciated the explanation. I knew he was a fighting game character, but the sheer *detail* of Sakurai's breakdown really brought it to light.

This has to be the greatest timeline ever ya? We have Mario, Sonic, cloud, snake, Terry, ryu, and banjo all in the same game?! Sakurai here making sure every game company take notes!

I have Sakurai to thank for exposing me to SNK. I grew up on Injustice and Street Fighter 4 (which I still like), but never found out about KoF until Terry got added into Smash. I decided to actually play a KoF game for the first time when 2002 UM was given away for free on Twitch Prime, and I LOVED it. That then sent me down a massive rabbit hole of SNK games, and it is now my favorite fighting game series. Thank you Sakurai! Without Terry being in smash, I likely never would have cared about or played this series in the first place.

I have to thank him for getting me interested in fighting games at all. I was never that interested in trying the genre even with Ryu in smash. But when Terry was revealed, I thought he looked so cool and had so much fun playing him. It was a result of those things that convinced me to give other fighting games a try. And with the several games and series I've tried since, Terry is still one of my favorite fighting game characters.

I… don’t think he does O_o. I actually tried looking and nothing says he does. That’s certainly interesting. I’m also really surprised to know that he actually enjoys Minecraft. With the way his Steve showcase went, I would not have guessed he cared for the game.

@@dragons_hook I saw a Smash player streaming Terry gameplay earlier and he got surprised he was knocked the hell off the stage while he was performing a basic Rising Tackle at the same time when his opponent was about to do a move, screaming "HOW??". Guess he wasn't paying attention to this Terry Sakurai tutorial where Sakurai mentioned if you charge the Rising Tackle its invincible lol

Honestly this is just a comfort video for me 😂 I did main Terry before I moved on but even so many years later I still go back to watch this. Terry’s one of my favorite characters and Max’s happiness is electric

It's SNK's fault for people not barely knowing who Terry is. They cancelled the Fatal Fury series just so they could focus on that nobody they call Kyo Kusanagi.

Did you spot the other Rock Howard reference in the ending trailer? Lucas takes young Rock's place posing with Terry.

Infinite respect to Sakurai for this. All fighting game fans can appreciate the work that went into this.

This shows how much he loved kof just as much as anyone else at the time. That was not an invitation for Terry. It was a love letter, thanks Sakurai.

Budgie Cat Buddy, as a so-called “casual Smash stan” of five years, I’ve gotta ask what “stubbornness” you’re referring to, considering how much I wanted Ryu and Ken in since I started playing Smash 4, and how much fun Terry is to play for me.

clenchingpluh I... can’t honestly believe that, considering how Smash as a whole just works conceptually? Anyone genuinely upset about a character’s inclusion in Smash has been the vast minority. The only exception to that rule was Corrin, and even that was blown out of proportion and misconstrued. Even if they’ve never played a fighting game in their lives, you’re going to have a hard time convincing me the vast majority of people’s responses to a character from a traditional fighting game being included to Smash wasn’t “Huh, cool.” instead of “stubbornness.”

Everyone talking about "are you OK?" when they should be talking about the vo for "busta woulff!!"

When Steve was announced, I was super fucking mad. I've never played Minecraft in my life and I was pushing 30 when it came out. I always thought of it as a "baby game", which it kind of is, but then I remembered this. I was SUPER FUCKING HYPED to hear Terry came to Smash, then absolutely baffled that the kids who knew Minecraft had no idea who this guy was. It's Terry Bogard! From Fatal Fury and King of Fighters! How do you not know...? Oh, wait. Arcades have been dead since 2005 and SNK was never very popular in the US anyway. So, I guess if I can get super excited for and feel intense nostalgia for Terry, I guess it's not that bad that Minecraft also gets in. The kids who grew up playing that probably feel the same about Steve that I do about Terry. (But hey, Minecraft kids! Give King of Fighters a chance!)

FYI: The one thing you probably missed about KOF is the stadium. When it came to a stadium, it's got to be a frickin gigantic coliseum. No matter it's the final match, or modern annual tournament. If you wonder why, at first KOF Tournament is an illegal tournament, held by Rugal. But since this tournament sending out international fighters, it changed into official tournament, as being a part of the story. I mean, there's no other fighting games that made a stage like that right? None of them! That's why this stage is pretty iconic for KOF. Also, I agreed with you btw

Damn this is a character made with love... When I heard Terry was going to be in Smash I thought ok well they'll just do a simple insert with some of his moves. What came out was a love letter to the Fatal Fury games! Wow!

Jesusmay David Sakurai in general never half asses when it comes to DLC characters for this game. Not to mention the fact that Sakurai himself growing up was a huge fan of Fatal Fury/ King Of Fighters and Sakurai actually got the idea for Smash after completely wrecking another guy in KOF 95

Antonio Hernandez I mean Sakurai did the best with what he could, and he still did a lot. I mean he included Cloud’s Advent Children costume, Limit Breaks, Omnislash, Summons as apart of his stage etc. The only part about Cloud that was half assed in anyway was the trophy/spirit representation and music which of course we all know isn’t exactly Sakurai’s fault

All of this work went into ONE CHARACTER and ONE STAGE thank you namco and Nintendo

Its crazy how Terry looks better than he ever has in recent years. This is how he should look in modern KOF games.

@@ZoMbi5lAy3r Not trying to undersell SNK. KOF XII & XIII Terry are some of my faves but those came out a decade ago. Since then we've had version like XIV & EX Layer that look weird. That's why I said he looks better than he ever has in recent years. This is the best modern 3D model for the character imo.

Personal bias and pettiness came through a bit in my reply cos I first assumed it was like saying SNK are bad at making their own characters good and interesting. But, it's all good, dude

Dude, he loves SNK so much that I'm legit crying tears of joy.

It's absolutely unbelievable the amount of detail they pushed into it. Terry is a homage to all of us older fighting games players, and for all kof legacy. From the details in caps to cameos to fighting motions. This is the expansion of the year. 10/10!!!!

the only thing that could've made Terry even better than he already is would've been a Wild Wolf alt costume
