    This really does feel like the culmination of everything From did with Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro, just put within an open world and refined. I'm all on board, I didn't expect the wheel to be reinvented, but fine tuned.

    @Eddy I disagree. Find the horse riding in BotW to be extremely fluid and controls better than most other games imo. Not only that but the options who have while on horse back are more than you have in other games as well. The only caveat is that you can’t scale steep cliffs and hills/mountains but that’s ok as it then allows more incentive to take advantage of climbing if you choose to or take a different route. The controls might seem weird and stiff to some but you have to take account the Horses gait and watch your speed and slow down or speed up when necessary to be able to maneuver through and around trees or other obstacles. The cherry on top is the beautiful music that plays while riding through the World that brakes up the other wise silence apart from the sounds of nature, the way the hooves sound as the horse runs goes along with the rhythm of the music almost as if it’s a percussion instrument and it all comes together amazingly.

    "This is could end up being Bandai-Namco's Skyrim." Holy crap, could things come more full circle? King's Field and its ilk were the prototype for fully-3D first-person action-RPGs, brushing shoulders with the earliest Elder Scrolls games. Demon's Souls was originally an attempt to make Japan's answer to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, but thankfully went and did its own thing entirely, partially due to limitations in budget and ability. But now that FROM is armed with the budget, ability, and their own esteemed powerhouse franchise, they really CAN create the Japanese answer to Elder Scrolls, and in an entirely unique way that only FROM can do.

I certainly enjoyed it the first time, but I was also a lot younger then and didn't really recognize how poor the writing is in many places. I actually really appreciate that they aren't going from a blank slate here. I was sad when they announced the end of the Dark Souls series, but it did make sense, the story had run it's course, there was nowhere else to go. But this looks like a spiritual successor, not just to Dark Souls, but also to Bloodborne and Sekiro in places. They're taking that core gameplay from each game, fusing them together, and refining it. Not only that, but they're actively showing this off. Other companies would be trying to put the focus on what's new and exciting, and desperately disguising the things they've carried over. Meanwhile, Fromsoft is taking entire animations, sound effects and stances from their other games and putting them on full display. They appear to know that a refinement of their gameplay style is exactly what people want from them. And hell, all that effort they saved from just porting over all of these things? That's probably gone into all the crazy new stuff they're showing off as well.

Love the aesthetic, the magic, the environment, the odd creatures like Alexander and those swamp giant things we saw with the vines, and what really sold me was the massive castle dungeon. Edit: I'd love if they did a mixture and allowed players to customize their character based on playstyle. Out of all of FromSoft's titles, Sekiro was my favorite because of the parrying and countering. But it was also one of my biggest issues because gameplay became repetitive pretty quickly imo. So to be able to have a mixture or switch playstyles would be fantastic and offer even more replayability.

    The open world will probably serve more as a hub to enter actual interiors or smaller more well designed areas. And you will probably have to even unlock certain shortcuts or actual access to new areas. But seeing how many mechanics, animations and even sound effects they reuse, i hope it's because they actually put most of their time into world and level design. It's pretty much a natural evolution to Sekiro which already had some huge completely open areas, that were still really well designed.

    They explained it, the legacy dungeons. There will be somewhere between 6-10 of these which are basically the size of a regular dark souls level scattered around and between the open world. The one they showed was stormveil castle. They also have their mini dungeons and the "open world" itself. Also, fromsoftware/bandai have never used the term "Open world" to describe this game. One of the developers said they intentionally avoided that term because they didnt want to misrepresent what the game was. Its not a fully open world, rather multiple massive areas split apart by the legacy dungeons mentioned above.

    It's pretty funny that we're basically watching a long drawn out conversation between game devs on what an RPG or Adventure game should be. Demon's Souls started life as Sony commissioning FromSoft for an answer to The Elder Scrolls Oblivion. It went its own way entirely instead drawing some themes from Western fantasy but as much Zelda and Castlevania ended up in its DNA as anything. Dark Souls continued its concept while releasing around the same time as Skyrim. Nintendo saw how well Skyrim sold and studied it and turned out their idea of an open world fantasy adventure with Breath of the Wild while From finished the Souls trilogy. Now we're watching this crazy culmination of what FromSoft can do, mixing Elder Scrolls and BotW concepts in with their own now well established Souls formula. Frankly, the real question will be if Bethesda can even respond in any coherent manner with the next Elder Scrolls. Because being able to traverse huge environments and battle huge monsters with good 3rd person action combat as in Elden Ring takes a pretty big dump on the lame combat of Skyrim, and BotW showed how fun really open traversal options can be. I dunno if the folks at Bethsoft can even compete with this decade long rejoinder.

  • @jackwithahat8601

    @jackwithahat8601

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is indeed a very interesting take. I think the only way Bethesda could compete with BOTW2 and Elden Ring is if they were to go back to a more RPG-focused, story oriented, immersive experience in an unique setting like what Morrowind was but without all of the bullshit that makes Morrowind unplayable for casuals. I don't think they're going to do this, because Bethesda has proven in _multiple_ ways to be full of incompetent, passionless devs in the last decade, but that's the only way I could see them surviving. It's clear that Elder Scrolls games were never built around good combat, so immersion and story are all they have. Basically what I'm asking is for them to make a quality product which they most definitely won't lmao.

    I was nervous about it being open world since I like so few games with open worlds, but it seems like From is landing right in the sweet spot I look for from open world games. Much more in the vein of BotW, Morrowind, and Shadow of the Colossus than, say, assassin's Creed, which I am very pleased with.

    I saw quite a lot of weapon switching during battle. I understand the necessity of having weapons weight quite a bit and all of that in Souls games, but I've always thought allowing you to carry more equiped weapons and switch them quickly would actually make a more stylish and fun combat system, hopefully that's what they are doing here.

    @@yellowcard8100 Yeah, but unless you have crazy weight stats or want to fat run everywhere there is a limit to what you can carry. I guess it depends on what they want to do. If they want to keep it as Soul-ish as possible its great, and I'll love it anyways, but if they are going for a more dynamic combat system, reducing the weight of weapons so that you can realistically carry more of them in your hotbar would automatically speed up combat and make it more flashy which is different, but would also be fun.

    @@nikkis.2066 Open world games are so boring to me, because it's just a flower picking simulator with some combat. I'd love for someone to tell me how this game is going to be any different than, say, Horizon Zero Dawn, other than the combat being a bit different and the aesthetic not being robot dinosaurs. These open world games all follow the same gameplay reward loop, 70% time wasting and 30% game.
