Mavic Air | TapFly Tutorial (Tap to Fly)

    Thank you Jeff, I'm a newbie to drone world. Bought and flew my Mavic Air only twice thus far. And only for short distances so far. As a hobby videotographer , if I understood you correctly, the Tap Fly "free" mode functions like the previous MP's mode known as "course lock" where the drone locks and flies in selected direction all the while the camera is free to be aimed at any direction without changing the fly path. If this is what "free" mode does than I think this is the most important function of Mavic Air's Tap Fly for cinematic filming. Perhaps you can state this in your video it would clear up a lot of confusion. thanks.

    spondyful you are absolutely correct, it is just like course lock. The only difference is i believe you had to "active track" an object with the MP. On the MA, you won't need to lock on to an object.

    Thanks so much for this video. I received my Mavic Air about 10 days ago, but have been unable to fly due to the weather. As a result, I've been watching videos just to learn as much as I can about the MA. You are correct in that I have not seen any, in the 3 dozen or more videos I've accessed that talk about this feature and it looks so cool. Thanks again.

    Great, this feature combines old Tapfly function with Course-lock and that is so cool. Some people say that, the missing of Course-lock is the reason to not buy the Mavic Air, but now they will change their minds for sure :D I wonder why nobody makes a review of this function so far. Great job Jeff, now i`m sure for myself that definitely will buy this little monster :) Thanks for convincing me :)

    Nice video well explained? DJI Mavic Air TapFly is so cool! My favorite is the 'Free TapFly' it's as if Mavic Air is on Autopilot and we can enjoy the flight by moving around the gimbal/yaw! Some one mentioned in another video that Mavic Air's obstacle avoidence System is Deactivated in Free TapFly? Is that correct? Thanks.

    So basically I can set a straight line, at a certain height, at what speed I tell the drone to do, and it will do that, and I can pause, take a photo, then continue, and the flight mode will continue as before???, so if I pick, say 15 ft above ground, would the mavic pro do this, thanks again Jeff.

    You should try Litchi if you haven't already. You can set up waypoints, and set each way point to have the camera pointed in a certain direction. The camera smoothly moves the position from one camera angle to the next like butter.

    Great Video! I have a question; While in TapFly why is the Attitude warning always o0n the screen? I'm assuming that the obstacle sensors are inoperative in all TapFly modes, is this correct? One final question; Is there a way to turn off the warning? I.M.O. it's just one more thing blocking a part of the screen. Thanks

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Raymond Sherman the attitude warning is actually b/c it was pretty windy causing the pitch of the mavic to be too high or low (front or back). So it just indicates that the obstacle avoidance turns off momentarily. I think the setting is too sensitive on the mavic due to the snall size. My warning is always getting triggered :(

    You don't mention the warnings that come up saying obstacle detection is not working. I have seen this warning on my own mavic air. Scares me to fly in an automated flight with no obstacle detection. Can you explain further?

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ryan, I would not worry about this most of the time. Usually the warning will say the "Attitude is too large". This will commonly happen if the wind is gusty and/or you are flying fast(mavic is leaning into the wind). Attitide means the pitch of the mavic is too high or to low, so the sensors are in effect facing too high or too low to help with obstacle avoidance, instead of facing perfectly forward. You bring up a good point though, when using automated flight modes; always have your finger close to the pause button. Hope this helps!

    Best video yet regarding tapfly. Do you know what the crosshair is indicating?

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, yep i actually added the crosshair to point out the horizon line on the screen. If you tap anywhere on the screen above the line, the mavic will rise accordingly. I tap anywhere below the line, the mavic will descend in that direction. Really nice feature, as obstacle avoidance is enabled as well.

    Hey Gangsta! Go to Facebook and search for a group called the Amelia Droneharts. It is the world's largest and oldest club for women drone pilots. There are over 700 women drone pilots from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia who are both professionals and hobbyist pilots. You will find a safe space and a supportive community who will help you get started flying with great advice and encouragement. Ask to join and one of the admins will send you a reply. I am 60 and have been flying for about 4 years. I recently got my FAA card and am now a licensed remote pilot. I am one of the admins for the Droneharts and we would love to have you!

    Hi Jeff! I did not really figure out if you can do a "Free" Tap Fly and the control the camera with the control sticks and the wheel or just with the touch-display. Can you explain this a little more? Thanks! Btw: Nice video! 👍

    Thanks for the compliment Jens! Yes, basically in "free" mode you will fly in a direct line, however your "left stick" and "camera wheel" are fully enabled to point the camera freely(you could spin 360 degrees still flying on the straight line). The "right stick still works as well if you need to change your line of flight. Cheers!

    Thats very interesting as it replaces the course-lock feature some people are missing (mavic pro had course lock). But you should be sure, the drone does not fly into something, because the sensors may face in another direction that the flight goes. ;-)

    Indeed... I started with drones when Mikrocopter was "the best"... no sensors, often no gps, shaky gimbals and video transmission for 100 meters...and the drones where nearly 5kg heavy. I am so happy we left this behind. 😹 It is really amazing, what DJi has released with the mavic air... very impressive!

    I have the Mavic Pro as well and do not see these improved TapFly options. I imagine DJI will only add it to the products with rearward facing sensors. Mavic Pro has Active Track w/ Course lock which is kind of similar, except you have to highlight a target.

    Hi Darden, thanks for the comment. I used couple things in this video. Most effects are called "speed ramps". Here's a vid i put together on this technique. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpiow7mzZ8rYpLw.html very easy to learn. The other effect are zoom transitions between clips. I used Ryan Nangle zoom transitions for some of these. Here is a link to his channel as well: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYl9ms2jodeWaaQ.html

    Hola Beja! I am using Final Cut Pro x for my video editing software. Within FCPx i am using speed ramping for the speed effects. i show how to do that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpiow7mzZ8rYpLw.html For the Transitions i believe most of them are default transitions available (Zoom In, Zoom out, Quick Pan, transitions). Another good channel that creates transitions for download is RyanNangle's channel: kzread.info/dron/_tusQ99Bno--GHjhb1Aa6g.html

    I have question. Is it possible to lock the target with camera and then to move with drone manually as you want?

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Vlada, Not "freely" as you want. However if you go into POI mode you can move towards or away from the locked on target as you fly in a circle, and control the gimbal tilt.

  • @vlax543

    @vlax543

    6 жыл бұрын

    Jeff Greene... so that means, drone will still fly in the circle and if there are some obstacles it will hit it unless you turn off POI. It would be nice to have POI with possibility to move drone by joystick 😊

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Correct, that is what i mean. As the drone is flying in a circle you can still use the joystick to pull in or out on the radius to avoid obstacles. Does that make sense?

    And what do you think about Air Mavic. I would found it as a favorite if there is only more time in air. Officialy it is 21 but from users I have found out, it is only 16. If you take 2 mins for going up and 2 for taking down..there is only 12 mins of flying ☹

    how did you remedy the message "cannot fly in that direction" ? . When I get that, I can 't enter tapfly. I tried the tapfly backwards but it appeared that the mavic wouldn't let me enter the fly backwards mode when that message came out. I saw it briefly on your screen and then it disappeared. but I couldn't see how you did it.

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @JeffGreeneChannel

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Leon, good question. I believe what is happening here is essentially a safety feature. TapFly needs to be done higher than ~10ft off the ground(in forward) if the gimbal is angled down, b/c pretty much anywhere you tap on the screen would be descending toward the ground(sensors kicking in). So i think in this case, when i hit tapfly, the message pops up immediately, since it probably defaults to forward tapfly. However, once I choose reverse, you still want to tap BELOW the horizon line to make the mavic air rise(everything is opposite). I am guessing when you tried tapfly backwards, you tapped above the horizon line, essentially making it descend instead(triggering the error message). Hope that makes sense. Let me know.

  • @leonslack2182

    @leonslack2182

    Thanks. I think I might have been trying it below 10 feet. I didn’t know about that safety feature. It did work when I started it way up in the air. That might have been the issue. I will try that again next time I go out. 👍

  • @leonslack2182

    @leonslack2182

    @@JeffGreeneChannel I went out and tried it again and at first couldn't determine the issue. But I think I figured it out. In attempt to do selfie flying backwards, it had the camera pointed down at me, but the horizon line was out of camera view. Once I adjusted the camera view to see the horizon line, it appeared to work every time. Apparently, without the horizon line in view, the tapfly cannot determine whether the direction is above or below the line.

  • @JeffGreeneChannel

    @@leonslack2182 yep, exactly. I was trying to explain that but you did a much better job. It's all about the horizon line.
